Keith Senior ready to answer country’s call
October 7, 2009

Tony Smith, the England coach, has a series of tricky calls to make over who to play at centre during the forthcoming Gillette Four Nations, including whether to respond to Keith Senior’s readiness to come out of international retirement.

The 33-year-old Leeds Rhinos centre said that he was prepared to answer his country’s call, although he has heard nothing from Smith, who dispensed with any sentiment on Tuesday in omitting Martin Gleeson, Senior’s England and Great Britain centre partner for most of the past seven years.

Smith has added two other Wigan Warriors players to his training squad, Sam Tomkins, 20, the engage Super League young player of the year, and Sean O’Loughlin, the Wigan captain, who missed the 2008 World Cup through injury. However, the England coach looks to have brought an end to Gleeson’s international career after 26 appearances.

The available choices at centre, nonetheless, represent meagre pickings. Whether Smith turns once again to Senior, who made his Britain debut in 1996 and announced his representative retirement after the disappointing World Cup campaign, will be known when he confirms his final squad selection on Monday, taking into account the Leeds and St Helens players involved in Saturday’s Grand Final at Old Trafford.

Senior’s left-centre place was occupied in the mid-season rout of France by Ryan Atkins, who has joined Smith’s Warrington Wolves from Wakefield Wildcats and would have been favourite to retain the position for the Four Nations games against France, Australia and New Zealand, had he not had to undergo a wrist operation.

Of the 22 players included so far in the training squad, which will form the basis of the team to play Wales in a warm-up match in Bridgend on Saturday week, Michael Shenton, of Castleford Tigers, is the only specialist centre. Paul Sykes, of Bradford Bulls, and Chris Bridge, of Warrington, are included for their utility value as other options, although Lee Smith, Senior’s fellow Leeds centre, who is switching codes at the end of the season, confirmed that London Wasps would not stand in his way if selected.

“I’m always available for my country, which any person should be,” Smith, who was overlooked for the 66-12 win against France in Paris in June, said. “I’m just concentrating on Saturday but, if Tony wants to give me a call and use me in the Four Nations, I’d be more than happy to do that. Wasps are fine with me playing. That’s not a problem.”

Senior’s form for Leeds has been outstanding this year and there must be a temptation to replicate his potent left-side combination at Leeds with Ryan Hall, the league’s top tryscorer. “I know I could still play at international level and still do a job,” Senior said. “I’d have to speak to my family and I’d definitely think about it deeply. I’m a very proud man and I love pulling on an international shirt. You never say never, do you?”

Bradford Bulls have confirmed their capture of a third Australian signing, Brett Kearney, the 26-year-old Cronulla Sharks utility back, on a two-year contract, after those of Glenn Hall and Heath L’Estrange for next season. Kearney, who missed the rest of the NRL season after injuring his foot in the opening game, is a direct replacement for Ben Jeffries, who is rejoining Wakefield. “He’s had a tough year but had made massive strides before the injury and is very highly thought of in Australia,” Steve McNamara, the Bradford coach, said.

Widnes Vikings, of the Co-operative Championship, have signed Gareth Haggerty, the Harlequins and Ireland prop, for a second time, on a year-long deal. He first joined the club at 16.

Nathan Hindmarsh recalled to Kangaroos squad for Four Nations tournament

October 07, 2009

PARRAMATTA tackling machine Nathan Hindmarsh has been recalled to the Australian side after a two-year absence, as Kangaroos selectors made several changes to the national team for the Four Nations series later this month.

The 30 year-old backrower made 62 tackles and eight hit-ups for the Eels in last Sunday's grand final loss to Melbourne.

He is one of only two Parramatta players in the 24-man Kangaroos squad to play Tests against New Zealand (October 24), England (October 31) and France (November 7).

The other is Dally M medal winner Jarryd Hayne.

Melbourne has six players named, reflecting its standing after winning its second premiership in three seasons: incumbents Billy Slater, Greg Inlgis and Cameron Smith and newcomers Cooker Cronk, Bret White and Ryan Hoffman.

White will be making his debut in the Australian jersey with Hoffman and Cronk making a return after a two-year hiatus to that of Hindmarsh.

As revealed in The Australian today, Cronk and Wests Tigers rake Robbie Farah are the back-up players for Test halfback Johnathan Thurston (North Queensland) and hooker Cam Smith.

Manly, which had six players named in last year's World Cup squad following its 2008 NRL premiership, had only one named today - Anthony Watmough.

But other newcomers include backs Josh Morris (St George Illawarra), Michael Jennings (Penrith), Ben Hannant (Bulldogs), and David Shillington (Canberra).

Penrith's Trent Waterhouse has also been brought back from the international wilderness. He has played nine Tests but none since 2005.

"It is a side picked on recent form," coach Tim Sheens said, adding that some players had injury concerns and would have to prove their fitness before the squad departs for Europe on October 16.

"There are some issues and quite a number of players still in doubt," he said. "If you cannot run and complete training then we have to think about it. We cannot add to that squad after we leave."

Australia squad:

Petero Civoniceva (Penrith), Cooper Cronk (Melbourne), Robbie Farah (Wests Tigers), Israel Folau (Brisbane), Paul Gallen (Cronulla), Kurt Gidley (Newcastle), Ben Hannant (Bulldogs), Jarryd Hayne (Parramatta), Nathan Hindmarsh (Parramatta), Justin Hodges (Brisbane), Ryan Hoffman (Melbourne), Greg Inglis (Melbourne), Michael Jennings (Penrith), Darren Lockyer (capt, Brisbane), Luke Lewis (Penrith), Josh Morris (Bulldogs), David Shillington (Canberra), Billy Slater (Melbourne), Cameron Smith (Melbourne), Sam Thaiday (Brisbane), Johnathan Thurston (North Queensland), Trent Waterhouse (Penrith), Anthony Watmough (Manly), Brett White (Melbourne).

Cronk, Hindmarsh get Aussie call-up

Parramatta forward Nathan Hindmarsh has won a Kangaroos recall as part of the 24-man Australian Four Nations squad announced on Wednesday.

Hindmarsh has not played for Australia since 2007 but has been called up on the back of the Eels' memorable grand final finish to the NRL season.

Test coach Tim Sheens said form dictated the squad, with seven rookies picked and five incumbents from the May 8 Test win over the Kiwis omitted.

Robbie Farah, Ben Hannant, Michael Jennings, Luke Lewis, Josh Morris, David Shillington and Brett White were all selected for the first time.

Luke Bailey (arm) was not considered due to injury, while fellow incumbents Darius Boyd, Brent Kite, Glenn Stewart and Anthony Laffranchi were left out.

Minor premiers St George Illawarra and third placed Gold Coast did not have a single player selected in the touring party.

Premiers Melbourne had six players selected, with Cooper Cronk and Ryan Hoffman winning recalls alongside White, Greg Inglis, Cameron Smith and Billy Slater.

Hindmarsh and Jarryd Hayne were the only representatives from the losing grand finalists.

"Bailey was unavailable ... the other (four) missed out on, I suppose, form when you think about it," Sheens said of the incumbents omitted.

"It is a side picked on recent form."

Sheens said there were still injury concerns over some players in the squad and those in doubt would need to prove their fitness before the team departs on October 16.

Sheens said there were some shadow players on standby, but did not name them.

"There are some issues and quite a number of players still in doubt," said Sheens.

"If you cannot run and complete training then we have to think about it.

"We cannot add to that squad after we leave. This 24 is the only 24."

Four Broncos in Kangaroos squad

Four Broncos in Kangaroos squad
October 7, 2009 - 6:14PM

Brisbane skipper Darren Lockyer has been named in the Kangaroos line-up.

A front-row crisis in Australia has forced coach Tim Sheens to name three rookies and a veteran who hasn't played in four months for the Kangaroos' Four Nations tour.

Petero Civoniceva, 33, is Australia's only capped prop in the 24-man squad with Bulldogs' Ben Hannant, Melbourne's Brett White and Canberra's David Shillington all picked for their debuts.

It is the second successive year Australia has picked only four recognised front-rowers.

This is despite the Kangaroos being taught a lesson in last year's World Cup final when Steve Price and Josh Perry were injured and the hosts got trampled by New Zealand in a shock final defeat.

Price is again unavailable for the tour due to an eye injury, while fellow incumbent Luke Bailey (arm) withdrew from selection and Manly pair Perry and Brent Kite were dumped.

St George Illawarra prop Michael Weyman (groin) wasn't available, while teammate Justin Poore joined the likes of David Taylor, Nate Myles, Nick Kenny and Luke Douglas in being overlooked.

Despite being selected, Hannant and White may not even be fit to tour.

Hannant has an arm injury while White had MRI scans on his injured shoulder on Wednesday and will be one of Sheens' biggest concerns at a medical in Sydney on Thursday.

Sheens has earmarked Parramatta's Nathan Hindmarsh and Brisbane's Sam Thaiday as potential second-rowers who can play up front.

Shillington meanwhile is considered the squad's biggest bolter, one of eight players picked from sides not involved in the NRL finals and again riding into a representative jumper on the back of an injury.

The Canberra front-rower made his Queensland Origin debut in game three on July 15, replacing Civoniceva who has not played since a severe toe injury in Origin II on June 24.

Sheens said Shillington came with a glowing recommendation from Maroons coach Mal Meninga, who also took the 26-year-old to Papua New Guinea with the Prime Minister's XIII side last month.

"With Price not there and Bailey not available and Weyman not available there was a lot of issues with the front row,'' said Sheens.

"A lot more than people would be aware. A number of people made themselves unavailable and have battled with injury.

"It has been a hard season for the forwards in the NRL.

"Young Shillington has played well at the back end of his season, played well for his state and he did well for Mal.

"Mal gave him a good rap there in PNG. I think his body shape and go forward is the sort of thing we're looking for with Price not playing.''

Shillington said he was ecstatic with his Test call up, receiving the news while visiting his parents in Brisbane.

After making the most of his opportunity to replace Civoniceva in a Maroons jumper, Shillington wants to do likewise in the green and gold and cap a stunning debut season with the Raiders after leaving the Sydney Roosters in 2008.

"Obviously I am very excited and it's pretty overwhelming too,'' said Shillington.

"I never would have thought over the last couple of years or even this year that Australia was in my grasp.

"It's a big opportunity and it's something I will definitely take as best I can.''

Six Storm players rewarded with Kangaroos’ selection
07 Oct 2009 2:32p.m.

Halfback Cooper Cronk was among six Melbourne players rewarded for a National Rugby League premiership winning campaign with selection Wednesday in Australia's squad for the Four Nations tournament against Britain, France and New Zealand.

Cronk was selected ahead of Gold Coast Titans playmaker Scott Prince as the backup to incumbent halfback Johnathan Thurston in the 24-man national squad.

Storm skipper Cameron Smith, prop Brett White, backrower Ryan Hoffman, centre Greg Inglis and fullback Billy Slater were the other members of the Storm squad which beat Parramatta in last weekend's grand final included in the squad.

Slater, who won the Clive Churchill medal for best player in the grand final, is expected to duel with Parramatta star Jarryd Hayne for the fullback position. Whichever of the pair misses the No. 1 jersey is a likely contender to play on the wing.

Hayne and Nathan Hindmarsh were the only Eels players selected in the Australia team, which will be led by veteran five-eighth Darren Lockyer, one of four Brisbane Broncos in the squad.

Cronk, who set up two tries in Melbourne's grand final win, likely earned his selection above Prince for his versatility as a possible hooker in case Smith or his understudy, West Tigers' rake Robbie Farah, are unavailable.

Rugged Penrith prop Petero Civoniceva was retained in the squad despite concerns over his fitness, while Canterbury prop Ben Hannant was also included in the wake of injury.

Nathan Hindmarsh has won a recall to the Australian Test team alongside team mate Jarryd Hayne for the upcoming four nations tournament, to be held in Britain and France starting later this month.

Hindmarsh’s inclusion for the first time since 2007 is just reward for his starring role in the Eels run to the 2009 Grand Final, while Hayne will duel with Melbourne’s Billy Slater for the fullback’s slot.

The squad also includes five new faces in Bulldogs prop Ben Hannant and centre Josh Morris, Panthers centre Michael Jennings, Tigers rake Robbie Farah and bolter David Shillington from Canberra.

Premiers Melbourne have six players in the squad.

Australia's first game of the Four Nations is against New Zealand on October 23.

Earlier this week, Eels Fuifui Moimoi and Krisnan Inu were selected to represent New Zealand.

Hindmarsh wins back Test spot
Updated October 7, 2009 14:16:00

Australian rugby league selectors have recalled veteran Nathan Hindmarsh as well as injected five new faces into the 24-man squad for the upcoming Four Nations tournament.

Parramatta stalwart Hindmarsh, who has not represented Australia since 2007, has won back his Test jumper after an outstanding back half of the year with the grand finalist Eels.

Team-mate and Dally M Medallist Jarryd Hayne has also been selected but will most likely be pushed out to the wing with Billy Slater retaining the full-back position.

Included for the first time is Bulldogs prop Ben Hannant and centre Josh Morris, Panthers centre Michael Jennings, Tigers rake Robbie Farah and bolter David Shillington from Canberra.

Premiers Melbourne have six players in the squad including front rower Brett White and half-back Cooper Cronk as Johnathan Thurston's understudy.

Farah was preferred to Dally M Hooker of the Year Michael Ennis while Paul Gallen, Luke Lewis and Trent Waterhouse all won selection in the back row despite injuries late in the season.

No players were selected from the minor premier Dragons team or the Gold Coast Titans after their straight set exits from the NRL finals series.

Titans prop Luke Bailey (arm) was not considered due to injury, while fellow incumbents Darius Boyd, Brent Kite, Glenn Stewart and Anthony Laffranchi were left out.

"Bailey was unavailable ... the other (four) missed out on, I suppose, form when you think about it," coach Tim Sheens said of the incumbents omitted.

"It is a side picked on recent form."

Sheens said there were still injury concerns over some players in the squad including Petero Civoniceva and Hannant and those in doubt would need to prove their fitness before the team departs on October 16.

Sheens said there were some shadow players on standby, but did not name them.

"There are some issues and quite a number of players still in doubt," said Sheens.

"If you cannot run and complete training then we have to think about it.

"We cannot add to that squad after we leave. This 24 is the only 24."

Sheens says he thinks he will be able to accommodate both Hayne and Slater in his first choice team.

"There'll be a spot for both of them but exactly where we'll play them and how I'll play them is something that I'll work on over the next week and a half before we get into camp next week," he said.

Australia's first game of the Four Nations is against New Zealand on October 23.

Sheens says he picked a team to win
AAP
07 Oct 2009 16:42:24

Australia coach Tim Sheens says he has picked a Test team of overseas "novices" with the sole aim of winning the inaugural Four Nations tournaments against Great Britain, New Zealand and France.

Still reeling from their shock World Cup defeat to the Kiwis last year, Sheens has called on seven new faces and recalled six old ones to revitalise his 24-man squad for the Kangaroo tour.

Parramatta warhorse Nathan Hindmarsh heads the list of reinstatements, along with Parramatta star Jarryd Hayne, Penrith's Trent Waterhouse, Brisbane's Sam Thaiday and Melbourne's premiership duo Cooper Cronk and Ryan Hoffman.

The Storm have six members in the Test squad, while Brisbane (four) and Penrith (four) are the next best represented NRL sides.

Stunningly, minor premiers St George Illawarra and fellow semi-finalists Gold Coast did not have any players in the squad.

Dragons winger Darius Boyd and Titans prop Luke Bailey were two of the six incumbents left out, although Bailey and Warriors prop Steve Price were unavailable due to injury.

Anthony Laffranchi, Brent Kite and Glenn Stewart were all dropped.

Penrith utility Luke Lewis is one of seven rookies, although he toured with Australia six years ago without playing a Test.

Melbourne prop Brett White, Penrith's Michael Jennings, Canberra's David Shillington, Bulldogs pair Josh Morris and Ben Hannant, and Tigers hooker Robbie Farah complete the new faces.

Sheens said he picked a versatile side to win the tournament.

"It's all about winning this particular tournament," said Sheens.

"I'm not planning a club thing here where you're blooding young blokes ... it is who is currently in form and I think they're all in form.

"It's a very novice-type squad as far as overseas experience is concerned. The backline is our strength but again they have to play to their form.

"It's about on the day and that side has been beaten, last year in the World Cup and they were beaten in the Tri Nations overseas last time they toured."

As for the snubbing of the minor premiers, Sheens said prop Michael Weyman (groin) was unavailable and the Dragons had every right to be disappointed.

"It is very disappointing I suppose for the St George club in that regard, but again you tell me who we would leave out?" he said.

Sheens could yet lose a few players to injury, with White (shoulder) and Israel Folau (ankle) his biggest concerns.

The team have medicals in Sydney on Thursday, but injured players must be fully fit by the time the team enters camp next Tuesday or Sheens will make changes.

"There are some issues with quite a number of players still so it's a long way from being finalised," he said.

"If they can't run and complete training then we have got to think about it."

Sheens however is confident Penrith's Petero Civoniceva, who has not played since a severe toe injury in State of Origin II on June 24, will be fit to tour.

Civoniceva completed a session with the train-on squad last week and as the only recognised prop in the squad with Test experience he will be a crucial member of the team.

Sheens said Civoniceva would be eased back into playing, adding that front-row depth was a concern with only four props in the squad of 24.

Hindmarsh and Brisbane's Sam Thaiday will be used in the front row even though props with strong claims such as Justin Poore, David Taylor, Nick Kenny, Luke Douglas and Nate Myles were overlooked.

"There's a 12-man interchange as well which will allow Petero to warm into the series a bit," said Sheens.

"He will probably play every game to get better, he hasn't played footy for a while."

Meanwhile Sheens said he would find a way to fit both exciting fullbacks Billy Slater and Jarryd Hayne into his team for the opening clash against the Kiwis at Twickenham Stoop Stadium on October 24.

"I think there will be a spot for both of them, but exactly where we play them and how we play them is something that I will work on," he said.

Hindmarsh a Roo again but tour in doubt

GREG PRICHARD
October 7, 2009 - 11:09PM

NATHAN HINDMARSH admits he thought his representative career was over when selectors again left him out of the NSW and Australian sides earlier this year.

But after experiencing the elation of being recalled to the Australian team yesterday, the Parramatta second-rower now faces the prospect that playing in the Four Nations tournament in England and France could hurt his chances of having another big season with the Eels.

Hindmarsh's concern stems from the fact he requires an operation to repair a shoulder injury he carried through the finals series. Playing in the Four Nations would mean delaying the operation for a month and, with a lengthy recovery period to be factored in, he is worried he will not be able to undertake the full-on, pre-season training preparation he believes was a big factor behind his stellar season.

Last night Hindmarsh was seeking to discuss his situation with Eels coach Daniel Anderson and club doctor Michael Johnson before weighing up a decision ahead of the touring squad's medical at Concord Oval this morning.

''I'd be right to play games with a couple of needles, but it's just the fact it disrupts the pre-season,'' Hindmarsh said. ''They're saying it's a six-to-ten week recovery period, and that's before I'm allowed to do anything. I really enjoyed my pre-season last year. I really worked hard under 'Ando'. I was injury free and I trained very hard. I lost six kilos and I just don't want to have any disruptions going into next year.

''I'm going to speak to 'Ando' and the doc tonight. I want to find out how long it's going to take for me to get back into training after the operation because I'd like another good off-season. I'll talk to them and then I should know in the morning where I stand, when I go to the medical. We'll see what happens.''

Australia play New Zealand in London on October 24, in the first of three guaranteed matches. Games against England and France will follow, with the two top teams playing in the final on November 14. Hindmarsh, who turned 30 last month, has not played for NSW or Australia since 2007.

''I'm very glad to be back in it,'' he said. ''I never considered giving rep footy away. All you can do is try to play your best footy and hope the rewards come. But, to be honest, I was thinking I'd never get the chance to play rep footy again. I was hoping, but I'd pretty much given up on my chances. After not being picked for the Test against the Kiwis or State of Origin this year, and approaching 30, I thought that was it, that with the amount of in-form back-rowers going around they wouldn't be picking me.''

Hindmarsh said he was motivated to keep a light on for the selectors by veteran Roosters forward Craig Fitzgibbon's effort in breaking back into the NSW and Australian sides in 2008, after being left out in '06 and '07.

Fitzgibbon paid his former representative teammate an enormous compliment yesterday: ''All of us back-rowers have been chasing 'Hindy' for the past decade, in terms of the standard he sets, and none of us have caught up with him. I'm stoked that he's back in the Australian team, because he really deserves it. He's been playing great.

''Hindy is the sort of player who plays well whether his team is winning or losing, but what you find sometimes is that if your team is losing you don't get recognised, regardless of whether you deserve to or not. There are plenty of people who have been scratching their heads, wondering why he hasn't been picked for the last couple of years.''

Hindmarsh and his partner, Bonnie Scott, are getting married in December, and he had planned a buck's day celebration at Gundagai races on November 14. ''If I go [on the tour], the buck's party can wait.''

Hindmarsh earns Test recall

Hindmarsh earns Test recall
By Jane Aubrey
11:30 AEST Oct 7 2009

Hard-working Eels second rower Nathan Hindmarsh has been rewarded for his finals form with a recall to the Australian Test squad for the upcoming Four Nations tournament.

Australia's first game of the series will be against New Zealand in London on October 24.

Star fullbacks Jarryd Hayne and Billy Slater were both named. Kangaroo coach Tim Sheens told Fairfax Media last night that he had an 'open mind' as to which player he will actually use as fullback.

"They're different styles of players, so the decision comes down to the style you want the side to play and the type of side you're playing against," he said. "Billy's at the top of his game, but Hayne is a serious challenger."

In a surprise move, Tigers hooker Robbie Farah edged out Bulldog Michael Ennis as Cameron Smith's deputy. It could be again suggested that the Bulldogs have been snubbed by representative selectors with prop Ben Hannant and centre Josh Morris the only players named in the 24, much like this year's State of Origin Series.

Storm halfback Cooper Cronk has been named as Johnathan Thurston's deputy, edging out Gold Coast's Scott Prince.

Luke Bailey was not considered due to and arm injury, while other incumbents Darius Boyd, Brent Kite, Glenn Stewart and Anthony Laffranchi missed out.

"Bailey was unavailable ... the other (four) missed out on, I suppose, form when you think about it," Sheens said of the incumbents omitted.

"It is a side picked on recent form."

The bolter in the squad is Canberra's David Shillington.

The Kangaroos will convene in Sydney tomorrow for medical examinations and will depart Australia on October 16.

Shock recall for Waterhouse

Last updated: 7th October 2009

Penrith Panthers forward Trent Waterhouse has been handed a shock international recall by Australia for the Four Nations tournament.

Waterhouse, who was sent off in match three of the 2009 State of Origin, has not played for the Kangaroos since winning the last of his 10 caps in 2005

The 28-year-old, though, is one of five players set to return to the international fold for the tournament against England, France and New Zealand.

Parramatta duo Jarryd Hayne and Nathan Hindmarsh and Melbourne pair Cooper Cronk and Ryan Hoffman are also recalled by coach Tim Sheens.

Hayne played one Test two years ago, before representing Fiji at the World Cup - however his fine form has earned him a place in the 24-man squad.

Hindmarsh has also gone two years without a Test appearance but he will delay shoulder surgery to play, while Cronk and Hoffman will look to earn their second and third caps respectively.
Rookies

Australia are without veteran Steve Price, Luke Bailey and Brett Stewart because of injury, while Anthony Laffranchi, Glenn Stewart and Brent Kite have all been omitted from the team that beat New Zealand in the Anzac Test in May.

Sheens, though, has called in rookies Brett White, Robbie Farah, Ben Hannant, Michael Jennings, Luke Lewis, Josh Morris and David Shillington, but his squad contains no players from St George Illawarra.

Israel Folau, Anthony Watmough, Luke Lewis, Kurt Gidley, Petero Civoniceva and Ben Hannant are all carrying knocks - and Sheens insists they have to prove their fitness ahead of the squad's departure on October 16.

"It is a side picked on recent form," said Sheens.

"There are some issues and quite a number of players still in doubt. If you cannot run and complete training then we have to think about it. We cannot add to that squad after we leave."

Slater gets fullback nod, Hayne left to form lethal duo with Inglis

October 8, 2009

CLIVE CHURCHILL Medallist Billy Slater has won the fullback spot for at least Australia's opening Four Nations clash against New Zealand in London, pitching Parramatta superstar Jarryd Hayne into a lethal left-side combination with Greg Inglis - providing the Melbourne centre recovers from a shoulder problem he took into last Sunday's grand final.

Inglis had an MRI scan yesterday on a shoulder injury he suffered against Brisbane in the preliminary final. Prop Brett White, also chosen in the 24-man squad, similarly had scans yesterday and is likely to withdraw today, to be replaced by Cronulla's Luke Douglas.

Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens and the selectors named the squad after first selecting a top squad and choosing back-up around them. Versatility was a key commonality among the seven players not in the top 17; the reason Cooper Cronk was picked ahead of Scott Prince.

Prince's absence meant the top three teams in the regular season, Gold Coast, the Dragons and the Bulldogs, contributed just two players to the squad, Ben Hannant and Josh Morris. Minor premiers St George Illawarra had not one player in the squad, although prop Michael Weyman was not selected due to injury. Likewise Titans prop Luke Bailey was forced to withdraw, with surgery on an arm injury booked for today.

Most interest in the top team surrounds how Sheens will handle having both Slater, voted the best player in Sunday's grand final, and Hayne, arguably the best player in the world, in the same side. Sheens said he would accommodate both but gave little more away, but the Herald understands the Melbourne fullback, the incumbent, will be No.1 against the Kiwis on October 24.

But incumbency wasn't everything. Winger Darius Boyd, and forwards Anthony Laffranchi, Glenn Stewart and Brent Kite joined Bailey and Steve Price (both injured) in being omissions from Australia's last-start 38-10 victory over the Kiwis in May. Still, there are likely to be reprieves. Broncos outside back Israel Folau (ankle) is in doubt to tour, along with Bulldogs prop Hannant (arm) and Eel Nathan Hindmarsh (shoulder). There's a preliminary medical today and a full medical next Tuesday when the squad enters camp. Sheens did say he had no doubt Petero Civoniceva (toe injury) would play.

''It's a long way from being finalised,'' Sheens said. ''If they can't run and complete training we've got to think about it because we can't add to that squad. Your 24's your 24.''

Sheens said he understood there would be some frustration from the Dragons and the Titans.

''It would be disappointing for them … but there's no player picked that wasn't in form,'' Sheens said. ''That wasn't done deliberately. It wasn't done on where the team finished but the individuals. Tell me who we'd leave out.''

Dragons prop Justin Poore could be one slightly aggrieved, but Canberra Raiders rival David Shillington solidified his spot in the touring party with a strong performance for the Prime Minister's XIII against Papua New Guinea's Kumuls last month.

Taylor, Kenny off Aust squad of 24
8th October 2009

THE party of 24 players named in the Australian squad threw up the usual handful of surprise names, but unfortunately not on the list were local heroes Dave Taylor or Nick Kenny.

Both were part of the national training squad, but when the announcement was made the pair finished below the cut.

Taylor and Kenny received rave notices as the Broncos eased into the finals, but that did not prove to be enough.

Parramatta forward Nathan Hindmarsh has won a Kangaroos recall as part of the 24-man Australian Four Nations squad announced yesterday and after his grand final performance it was deserved.

Hindmarsh has not played for Australia since 2007, but has been called up on the back of the Eels' memorable grand final finish to the NRL season.

Test coach Tim Sheens said form dictated the squad, with seven rookies picked and five incumbents from the Test win over the Kiwis omitted.

Minor premiers St George Illawarra and third-placed Gold Coast did not have a single player selected in the touring party.

“Bailey was unavailable ... the other (four) missed out on, I suppose, form when you think about it,” Sheens said of the incumbents omitted.

“It is a side picked on recent form.”

Sheens said there were still injury concerns over some players in the squad and those in doubt would need to prove their fitness before the team departs on October 16. Sheens said there were some shadow players on standby, but did not name them.

“There are some issues and quite a number of players still in doubt,” said Sheens.

“If you cannot run and complete training, then we have to think about it.

”We cannot add to that squad after we leave. This 24 is the only 24.“

White's wedding on holdThe AustralianShould the specialist decide White is unfit to tour, Cronulla forward Luke Douglas is expected to be drafted into the touring squad. ...and more »

Brett White's wedding on hold
Brent Read
October 09, 2009

BRETT White wants to play for Australia. He also wants to get married. A shoulder injury may end up saving him from choosing between the two.

White is scheduled to marry his fiancee Cassie Adland on October 17 on the NSW south coast.

Given the Australian side leaves for London 24 hours earlier, a wedding that has been in the works for close to 12 months is suddenly in jeopardy.

Hence the conflict which has toyed with his emotions since being selected in the Kangaroos squad for the Four Nations tour.

"It looks like I'm going to have to make a phone call later on to one very disappointed fiancee," White said.

"I will probably go to the florist and buy her a big bunch of flowers and talk to her about it.

"I'm here and I want to play. I will do everything that is right by the team. I don't know if it can happen but apparently I might get divorced before I get married."

Needless to say, there was a mixed reaction when White shared the news of his selection with his bride-to-be.

"She has been planning it for a long time, about 12 months," he said. "It was well before and we didn't even realise this was on.

"She didn't actually say those words (congratulations). She didn't really say anything."

While White is desperate to tour with the Australian team, he remains under a fitness cloud. Although he was given the thumbs-up by physio Tony Ayoub yesterday, a final decision on the shoulder injury he carried in the finals series will be made today after a visit to a specialist.

The indications are White will be ruled out. Coach Tim Sheens has made it clear he cannot afford to carry injured players. Should the specialist decide White is unfit to tour, Cronulla forward Luke Douglas is expected to be drafted into the touring squad.

And as painful as it may be, White would at least have the consolation of a wedding.

Paul Gallen heads to UK for Kangaroo Tour

17 October 2009

Sharks enforcer Paul Gallen flew out of Sydney on Friday to take part in his first Kangaroo tour.

Gallen is part of a 24 man Australian squad due to take on England, France and New Zealand in the 2009 Four Nations tournament to be played in the Northern Hemisphere in the coming weeks.

The squad is due to arrive in London Saturday morning to begin their preparations for next weekends first Four Nations match against New Zealand to be played at The Stoop, Twickenham next Saturday.

In the lead up to the team’s departure the Kangaroos were in camp for a week in Sydney. Having not played since early September Gallen and the rest of the group were put through some intense training.

“Training this week has been great but pretty tough with lots of fitness. It actually felt like more of a pre season training camp,” Gallen said.

Gallen made his debut for Australia in 2008 but has yet to tour overseas as part of a Kangaroos squad.

“I just can’t wait to get over there, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Gallen said. "I am really looking forward to representing the Kangaroos in an overseas tour and playing under Tim Sheens."

Following the match against New Zealand Australia will head north to face England at Wigan on October 31.
The Kangaroos will then venture across the channel to play France in Paris on November 7. The final is due to be played the following weekend at Elland Rd, Leeds.
