Boys....20 years ago we had two f the best season's ever (88-89). I truely believe our forwards match our players in 1988...but look at our backs.

1989 vs 2009
Fullback - Docking vs Simmons - No need to commentate on the glaring differeces..Docking Dally M winner, played SOO;
Wing - Coleman v Covell - Only thing Covell has is his marking ablility, otherwise not much. Coleman was a genuine try scorer.
Wing - Watson/Wilson - Misi - Watson was reliable (misi drops the ball way to often). Wilson, good goal kicker, Dally M + SOO rep;
Centre - ET v Poms - Poms, plenty of potential, fulfilling noe of it. ET...Legend!!
Centre - McGaw v Ferguson. Fergo has potential but again McGaw played SOO, unstopable;
5/8 Speachly v Barrett - Barrett wins this one. Speach was a great defender but Barrett is a league above;
Russell v Seymour - Seymour has potential, still young and less expereinced but Bazza Russel was so quick, so dynamic. Won Rothmans Medal in 1988 (together with Gavin Miller I might add).

Bottom line....our backline are just not good enough or experienced enough.

ps I was not in the country in 1999....feel free to make the comparion.

99 we had Mat Rogers, Preston Campbell ... who else?

oh geez, I forgot to mention David Peachey.

our imposter Peachey has brought such disgrace to a legend of the club that I completely forgot about him for a moment.

You are talking about one of the greatest Sharks line-up's of all time in the '88 side, IMO, so there are bound to be deficiencies with todays team. The 88 team was strong across the park.

By the way, I agree with your comparisons but I think you should have lined up ET with Ferguson and Pomeroy with McGaw, only because they were more similar in their style of play: ET the speed machine and McGaw the raw power. We have a similar pairing in Fergo and Poms but they are well below the class of ET & McGaw, at this stage. Would be awesome if they were able to get close to that level of performance!

Hard to believe that with that lineup, that was so dominant, especially in '88; we still didn't make the Grand Final:(

I'm pretty sure ET was still there in 99 but he may have been injured for quite a bit of that season. We also had Mitch Healey, who was an extremely underated player. He had one of the best kicking games I've ever seen.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the backs looked something like this:

1. Peachey
2. Rogers
3. ET
4. Richardson?
5. Howland???
6. Dykes??
7. Healey.

There could be a bit of a variation on the team above. Some of the players that I have listed may have come or gone before 99, my memory isnt that great. Colin Best might have been in there as well.

I know we had a gun backline though. That was our year. :(

So all we need is to find a fountain of youth, make a few phone calls and get all the old boys on board and we'll win the comp, right, like they did in... doh!

I can understand Saints, Souths etc. fans living in the past, the past was good to them.

This was the 99 team that lost to the dragons in the semi, oh how that hurt.

What a backline it was

1)David Peachey
2)Mat Rogers
3)Andrew Ettingshausen
4)Russell Richardson
5)Brett Howland
6)Adam Dykes
7)Mitch Healey
8)Jason Stevens
9)Dean Treister
10)Martin Lang
11)Sean Ryan
12)Chris McKenna
13)Nick Graham
14)Andrew Pierce
15)Nathan Long
16)Paul Mellor
17)Jason Ferris

Still think 99 was the best team ever, that year from round 1 too 26 we were either outright first of equal first, not once were we outright second or worse.

Does anyone remember our first game ever against the Brisbane Broncos in 1988? They were top of the ladder and they came down to (was it Ronson then?) and we flogged them 38-8.
I remember Alan Wilson punting a grubber across field for Greg Davies to score and Gavin Miller feeding Barry Russell into a gap who in turn set Docking up to make it 16-0 after 10 minutes... ahh, those memories :)

I still have that game on tape. It was an ABC Saturday avo game :)

That certainly brings back some memories...the ground was known as Caltex Field back then, Docko and ET grabbed two tries apiece and a feature of the game was the dominant performance by Michael Speechley, who completely overshadowed his illustrious opposite, The King Wally Lewis. Here's the scoreboard, with links to match reports, from the Sharks Forever archives. Enjoy!:

ET also scored 2 sizzling tries in that match, which was by the way the broncos first ever winfield cup loss.
They did lose a panasonic cup match to penrith a couple of weeks earlier.
Just a slight query wasn't it david hatch who put in the grubber for the greg davies try ?

Wat year was it when we had Blaine Stanley. I could have sworn he was our halfback in the 99 season.

Pretty sure he was around from about 98 till 2000, 2001, he was around in 99 but he only played a handful of games and from memory played 5/8 more than anything.

What a beautiful sunny Saturday avo that was back in '88. David Morrow's commentary used to raise the hairs on my neck. Thanks for the info Megashark (yes Wally had a shocker) and Sharkarm you are spot on.
I just dug the game out of my wardrobe and yes it is David Hatch who puts the grubber in... Alan Wilson passes it out of his ass back to Hatch who thumps the grubber across field.

There are creases in the old tape now during Docking's first try when Morrow screams out 'it's 16-0' :(
