One of them is a centre, he (along with the other outside backs) are taught to listen to their support players when they make a break. If the support says to pass it your pass it, if they say hold it you hold it.
It's easy to comment on a game from the view we have on the t.v. However guess what Robson could see when he scooped that ball up? The open field infront of him, he can't see what's happening behind him. All he had to go off is what his support tells him. So when he's running and he can hear footsteps gaining on him and Gordan screams for the ball, Robson turns are tries his best to pass it too him.
