Broncos are on Stuart's wish list but they haven't been talking - yet

RICKY STUART has indicated a desire to coach Brisbane but insisted Broncos officials have not approached him about taking over at Red Hill.

Amid reports of disharmony in Brisbane between coach Ivan Henjak and some senior players, Stuart's name has, inevitably, been linked with the position.

The former NSW and Kangaroos coach quit Cronulla in July, saying he was intent on securing another NRL coaching job.

Henjak's contract was extended in January until the end of the 2012 season but, having overseen Brisbane's first failure to qualify for the semi-finals since 1991, the security of his position has been questioned.

''Ricky Stuart will be coaching the Broncos next year,'' Channel Nine league presenter Andrew Voss said on yesterday's Sunday Roast program.

Stuart's manager, John Fordham, said there had been no discussion with the Broncos but conceded Brisbane were ''a club of interest''.

''It is a purely hypothetical question but obviously [coaching Brisbane] would be of interest because of its rich history in the premiership and the fact that it is very well resourced,'' Fordham said. ''It is one of the better performing clubs in the NRL.''

Since deciding seven weeks ago to hand over the reins at the Sharks immediately to assistant Shane Flanagan, Stuart's next destination has been a talking point.

He is considered favourite to coach NSW in next year's State of Origin series but that would depend on a full review of the Blues set-up being completed by former Sydney Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan.

Stuart has made it clear that while he may be interested in taking on the NSW job again, having coached them to their last series win, in 2005, his priority is to coach in the NRL. He has ruled out the English Super League.

''At his press conference when he announced that he was leaving Cronulla he made it clear that his goal and passion is to continue as an NRL coach,'' Fordham said.

''There has been a lot of speculation about a number of clubs - Ricky has been linked with Parramatta, Canberra, South Sydney and Wests Tigers just in the last few weeks.

''Then there was talk of him going to the Melbourne Rebels in the Super 15. Like with Brisbane, I have no idea where that is coming from.''

Broncos officials have denied Henjak is on the cusp of being sacked.

Should no opening come about at Brisbane, Stuart may have to sit out the 2011 season or coach NSW exclusively as other clubs are unlikely to have vacancies.

North Queensland have indicated Neil Henry is in no danger of being replaced despite their dire season.

And Parramatta's board has guaranteed Eels coach Daniel Anderson his contract will not be terminated a year early even though chief executive Paul Osborne sounded out Storm assistant Stephen Kearney in Melbourne last month.

''If there is no job there is no job,'' Fordham said.

Broncos have not contacted Stuart

BRISBANE is just the type of club Ricky Stuart is looking for to revive his NRL coaching career.

However, neither Stuart nor his manager, John Fordham, has heard anything formally from the Broncos. Nor do they expect to as current coach Ivan Henjak signed another two-year deal earlier this year to take him through to the end of 2012.

But after the Broncos' exit from this year's race with their fourth loss in a row -- an 18-16 defeat to Canberra on Friday night -- the rumour mill was in full swing that Henjak would be gone in months and former Test coach Stuart was the wanted man.

"What Ricky and I don't know is who is floating his name around, because there's been no contact with me or Ricky from anyone associated with Brisbane," Fordham said yesterday.

He did restate Stuart's desire to coach in the NRL and not in the English Super League or Super 15 rugby union competitions.

"When Ricky concluded his arrangements with Cronulla he said then his goal was to remain a coach in the NRL and that hasn't changed whatsoever," Fordham said. "But in terms of being approached by any club, and that's all clubs in the NRL because he's already been linked with Parramatta and Canberra, we haven't had any discussions with anyone in authority with any club."

Stuart made no secret when he asked Cronulla for a release in July that his next coaching job would be with a NRL club with a financially well resourced football department and a player roster with match-winners.

"Certainly Brisbane fits both those criteria very, very snuggly," Fordham said when asked if Stuart would consider Brisbane in the future.

"Brisbane is a club that has got an outstanding history of success, so you'd have to rate it in the top bracket of clubs to coach.

"(Brisbane CEO) Bruno (Cullen) does have my telephone number because we negotiated with him two years ago when Craig Bellamy had to decide whether to come back to Brisbane or stay in Melbourne."

It seems the Henjak dilemma can be side-stepped by Cullen, who finishes with the Broncos on December 1, and will be in the "in tray" or maybe the "too-hard basket" for the incoming chief executive.

The Broncos board will decide its shortlist for Cullen's replacements this week, begin interviews next week, and name the successful applicant after the grand final.

Weekend newspapers reported a deterioration in the relationship between Henjak and his captain, Darren Lockyer, over Lockyer's eagerness to carry a rib injury and play against Canberra to try to get his side into the finals.

Lockyer completed a full session of running, passing and kicking skills with apparent ease last Tuesday. He opted out of the contact session and when, quizzed by reporters on whether he could play, said: "We'll see. One session down, two to go."

But an hour later and a written statement from Lockyer said he had done some contact work behind closed doors in the Broncos gymnasium and had ruled himself out. That seemed at odds with his comments earlier of wanting to complete Thursday's final session on the eve of the game before making a decision.

It is not known if there are any performance clauses in Henjak's contract that would give Brisbane with an "out" should the Broncos have another sub-standard season next year.

Stuart is the leading candidate to coach NSW next winter.

Ricky Stuart's manager says former Test coach would consider Broncos

Ricky Stuart's manager says former Test coach would consider Broncos
By Peter Badel
September 06, 2010

Ricky Stuart's manager says the former Test coach would be interested in coaching Brisbane Broncos - but insists he has not been approached to replace the under-fire Ivan Henjak.

Rumours sweeping league circles on Sunday suggested Henjak was set to be dumped by the Broncos in favour of Stuart, who remains unemployed after standing down as Cronulla coach in July.

The speculation followed a report yesterday that Henjak, who is contracted until the end of 2012, was losing the support of Broncos players due to his man-management style.

Stuart has been repeatedly linked with a move north, with Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen forced to deny rumours last December that the premiership-winning coach was in the club's sights.

Stuart's agent John Fordham said he had not spoken to the Broncos but made it clear the former Test halfback was determined to resurrect his NRL coaching career.

"No one at the Broncos has spoken to Ricky so it goes under the heading of 'speculation'," Fordham said.

"Bruno Cullen has my phone number and I have not heard from him. In fact the last time I spoke to Bruno was when they were making a bid for Craig Bellamy (Storm coach) and that was nearly two years ago.

"I haven't spoken to anyone at the Broncos whatsoever about Ricky Stuart.

"Ricky is currently without an NRL club, at the time he finished with Cronulla he said his main objective was to continue coaching in the NRL.

"A club with the history of success like Brisbane would naturally be attractive but I've got to add we've had no discussions whatsoever with Brisbane."

It was believed Henjak's new deal contained a clause stating the Broncos coach could be released if he failed to steer the club to the finals.

But Cullen insists Henjak's contract does not contain any performance-related clauses.

"That's totally wrong," he said.

"If that was the case and I was Ivan, I wouldn't sign something like that, that's like signing your own death warrant.

"How could anyone blame Ivan for not making the finals this year? That is definitely not in his contract, it never has been. There was no measurement of Ivan like that."

Last month, a candid Henjak admitted Broncos powerbrokers could terminate his deal if they believed he was not the right man for the job.

"I've got a contract until the end of 2012 and sometimes those things aren't even secured. I never take my spot for granted," he said.

"I've said to Bruno there's a lot of coaches that don't see out their contract. I don't know where the rumour came from (about Stuart replacing him), but if the club wants to move me on, I have no control over that. I'm enjoying the challenge right now."

not let them rot, and complain when they get a **** attitude ala albert this year

Well said and very true if we aren't going to use them then why have them Ricky always said he likes to bring hem up and give them a taste then drop them again must do wonders for your confidence.

I agree Snowman,

Filiga looked the goods at the Dogs and he fell off the face of the earth after he came here.

Ricky Stuart wasted Filiga's career here.

If Stuart became the Donkeys coach I look forward to seeing him waste a player like Matt Gillett's career.

Lockyer denies Henjak unrest

Lockyer denies Henjak unrest
September 15, 2010 - 9:41 PM

Brisbane skipper Darren Lockyer has rubbished claims of player unrest against embattled coach Ivan Henjak.

With the Broncos still coming to grips with missing out on the NRL finals for the first time in 19 years, Lockyer has been forced to quash reports of disharmony between the coach and senior players.

Henjak's future has been the hot topic in Queensland since the Broncos missed the finals with talk former Sharks boss Ricky Stuart was being lined up to take the reins for next season.

It was thought many senior Broncos players have been frustrated with the lack of input into the club's training and game plans, as well as issues with Henjak's man-management skills.

But Lockyer rejected all of those notions on Wednesday and believes that type of speculation comes with the territory after such a disappointing year for the club on the field.

'The Broncos missing the finals for the first time in 18 years or whatever it is there's always going to be a few questions asked and fingers pointed,' Lockyer said as the Kangaroos train-on squad assembled in Sydney on Wednesday.

'But there was a lot of positives out of this year and things look good for next year.'

'We just have to learn from the mistakes we made. I'm sure after a good pre-season all that's happened this year will be forgotten.'

Asked about rumours of player unrest with the coach, Lockyer said: 'That's not the case.'

'Again, right through the playing group to the club, we're disappointed we're not part of the finals this year.'

'People are going to start searching for things but there's nothing to find.'

'There were some good signs for the Broncos this year and we just move on and focus on making next year a successful one for us.'

Broncos back-rower Sam Thaiday said the players needed to shoulder most of the responsibility for the club's poor season.

'It's been (a) very happy (club). We've very disappointed we didn't reach the finals but we've done a lot of good things and blooded a lot of new players,' he said.

'There are a lot of positive things we can take out of this season.'

'Everyone's trying to find answers to what's gone wrong.'

'It just wasn't our year and I don't think you can point the finger at the coach.'

Lockyer gets an opportunity to end a difficult year on a positive note by leading the Australian squad into the Four Nations tournament next month.

The 33-year-old missed the last month of the season with a painful rib cartilage injury but is confident of recovering in time for Australia's first match on October 23.

'They're coming along pretty good, the last couple of weeks they've settled down,' Lockyer said.

'The team doesn't get announced for a couple of weeks yet so by then everything will be fine.'

'Running's not an issue, it's more the contact work but the doctors assured me the time when the first game of the Four Nations comes around it will be ok.'

'It's pretty difficult watching (the finals) but to take a positive out of it, it does give you some time to freshen up mentally so that way you do come into this tournament fresh.'

Poor old Ivan, he's a dead man walking it seems.

As for Ricky- he's gonna cop even more stick (see what I did there? :)) when he wins with a superstar young side as people say that he did it with a side that was built for him, by Ivan.

Cricket's a funny game.

Na, if he went there he'll have a lot of support at the top. As much as I hate the Bongos they have a pretty good structure it seems.

Giving Ricky all the blame for our failures but none of the credit of the Roosters successes is the very definition of bias.

Ricky is a good coach and our results in 2008 showed that. He just did not have the ability to rebuild this side after the drama of 2009.
