Sharks Desperate For Roosters Win

Sharks Desperate For Roosters Win
10/08/2010 5:17:30 PM

It was one the tries of the season and looking back Nathan Gardner remembers it very well.

It was back in round 13 when rookie Sharks fullback fielded a high kick metres out from his line and looked up to see a swarm of Roosters about to smash him.

Twenty-two seconds and 100m later he was diving over in the corner after beating up to nine defenders in a scintillating run that is still to be topped for individual try-of-the-year.

The Sharks went on to win the match 42-18 in their best performance of 2010.

Ahead of Friday's re-match against the Roosters at Toyota Stadium, Gardner recalls the moment with great fondness.

"It was a good feeling to score a try like that and, more importantly, come up with a win," he said.

"It was a thrill to do something like that so early in my NRL career."

"It's something I will never forget."

Things haven’t quite gone to plan for Cronulla since that memorable night at the SFS.

But Gardner's form at fullback has been one of the few positives.

"I've exceeded all my expectations," the young No.1 said.

"There are some days you feel like you didn’t play well but I remind myself I'm only 20 and here I am playing NRL."

"It’s not all going to happen for me every game. I've just got to keep working hard and
remember I'm young and still learning and developing my game."

"There's plenty ahead of me. Guys like 'Baz' (Trent Barrett) and 'Gal' (Paul Gallen) have been tremendous in giving me the right advice and support and I feel like I am heading in the right direction."

The education continues against top four aspirants the Roosters in the Friday TV match.

Tim Smith for Scott Porter at half-back is the only change to the Cronulla side beaten 37-10 by the Warriors last Saturday.

Winger Luke Covell will play his first game since announcing his retirement at season's end.

With Barrett also departing in a month's time, the Sharks desperately want to give both a decent send-off.

"They don’t deserve to go out on a losing note or on the back of bad performances," Gardner declared.

"We definitely want to finish the year off well for both those guys and to get Shane (Flanagan) his first win, especially at home."

"The fans could do with a lift as well."

"We've got plenty of incentive to play well."

So will there be a repeat this Friday night of that brilliant try?

"Ha. Fans will have to come and see."

Shudder. That wouldn't help things, but its entirely possible.

I won't be surprised if there's some late changes.

Test of character
10/08/2010 6:30:00 PM

Sydney Roosters captain Braith Anasta knows Friday night's trip to Toyota Stadium to face the Cronulla Sharks will be no walk in the park.

Quick to point out one of few blips on the radar this season, the 42-18 hiding the Shire based club handed out almost 10 weeks is one Ansata remembers for all the wrong reasons.

Since then their seasons have gone in vastly different directions.

The Sharks have won just once since the round 13 encounter whereas the Roosters have taken the points in six of their last eight.

The captain is adamant his side’s character will be tested in the face of their first defeat in six matches last Sunday.

“How a team bounces back is always a measure of their character,” Anasta said.

“We weren’t bad against the Dragons but we didn’t play our best. We will have to produce something better to get back on track this Friday.

“People are quick to write off the Sharks but we aren’t buying into it. We saw firsthand what they can dish out earlier in the season and we can’t afford to cop that again,” he said.

Two competition points away from making sure of a finals birth is not something that is worrying the Tricolours camp with four rounds to play.

The bar has now been set higher after recording impressive wins in their first season under coach Brian Smith.

“We want to play finals and we think top four at this stage is a realistic goal,” Anasta stated.

“We dropped a couple of games during the season, which we could have won but the guys have been playing well enough to keep us in the hunt for one of the top few places.

“At the start of the year I wasn’t thinking this far ahead but you always aim to get (to the finals) at the very least. The way we have played this season has surprised some but given the players we had here and new guys that have come in, we feel we deserve our spot,” he said.

Making the faithful proud again has been a highlight of 2010 for the Roosters captain for the duration of his first full season in charge.

However, inflicting a sixth straight home defeat on the Sharks will be a tough ask against 17 players trying to give something back to their loyal followers.

“That makes the test that much harder because we are coming up against a desperate side,” Anasta said of claiming victory at Shark Park.

“That’s when some are at their most dangerous but we need to get going in the right direction and show how bad we want to be in the finals.

“They will won’t to give their fans some reward before the season is over, we know the feeling too well. It has been a great year for the club but we aren’t done yet.”

The NRL side to face the Sharks is:

Anthony Minichiello, Phil Graham, Mitchell Aubusson, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Sam Perrett, Todd Carney, Mitchell Pearce, Jason Ryles, Jake Friend, Daniel Conn, Frank Paul Nuuausala, Nate Myles, Braith Anasta. Interchange: Martin Kennedy, Mose Masoe, Lopini Paea, Nick Kouparitsas.

The Toyota Cup side to tackle the Sharks in the 20s is:

Jack Littlejohn, Asipeli Fine, Anthony Gelling, Cheyse Blair, Bradley Manton, Jacob Miller, Brad Murray, Blake Williamson, Olireti Samuelu, Isaac Maliota, Jerome Leolahi, Lou Goodwin, Nick Eshman. Interchange: Boyd Strickland, Tom Pelo, John Leiataua, Curtis Rona.

Mannah stoked to give something back

Mannah stoked to give something back
Posted August 10, 2010 20:45:00

Sharks forward Jon Mannah says he is overwhelmed by the club's decision to dedicate this Friday's match against the Roosters to him.

Mannah is in remission after being diagnosed with cancer last year and is Cronulla's ambassador for the NRL's inaugural Men's Cancer Awareness Round.

He said it is nice to give something back after football helped him through his tough time.

"Footy was something that I sort of clinged [sic] on to," he said.

"It was helpful to have that there and to sort of take my mind off what was happening and where I was at some stages.

"It was really helpful at times."

Mannah said the gesture caught him a bit off-guard.

"It is a really big honour, and I didn't think that was going to happen," he said.

"It is a bit overwhelming and really exciting to hear that."
