So is Ferguson, he is only 18, I am not sure, I did not hear Wright's names in the same convo, but I know they are impressed by him. As I said, the talk was they aren't too impressed with Kearney's pre-season form, but they were with Ferguson's, but maybe come mid next week, Sticky might just run with the safer option in Kearney, we will know by Thursday next week.

CRONULLA coach Ricky Stuart will today name Solomon Haumono's nephew in first grade for this weekend's round 1 match against Penrith. Blake Ferguson, 18, will line-up at centre having played in the Sharks’ under-20s side last year after arriving from Wellington, near Dubbo.

“I’m pretty excited – it’s a big achievement and I can’t wait to get out there,’’ Ferguson said.

“Solomon has had a big influence on my career. He has been in my ear constantly telling me to stay clean and keep out of trouble. He has been a good role model for me. He’s also taught me a lot about defence.’’

Haumono, the former league star now professional boxer, said Ferguson had an enormous future.

“Blake has tons of ability – he has the world at his feet,’’ he said.

“He has only been here for a year so he has done so well to now be playing NRL at just 18.

<EDITED>

Meanwhile, injured Sharks trio Paul Gallen, Reni Maitua and Brett Seymour have been named in a 19-man squad for the game against Penrith at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night

Rookie Blake Ferguson is the bolter in the side, winning the hotly contested centre berth alongside Ben Pomeroy ahead of Mitch Brown and David Simmons.

A tall and athletic 18-year-old hailing from Wellington in Central NSW, Ferguson was brought to the club in 2008 by former Bulldogs and Manly forward-turned professional boxer, Solomon Haumono, who is a relation of the young Shark.

could he be the next Greg Inglis? we will know soon enough

I thought you weren't much on Inglis?

Inglis? I personally went and watched him play at last yrs grand final and he was as exciting as watching paint try
I think he showed his true colours world cup final, choke!

Inglis, when the chips are up, hes sensational, when the chips are down hes useless.

When his side is playing well his amazing, when hes in a tough game, hes now where to be found, in the whole finals series of last yr he didnt do a damn thing.

Hungry for success, Wellington’s Blake Ferguson has made his debut with the Cronulla Sharks in the opening match of the 2009 NRL competition.

Eighteen-year-old Ferguson was proud to be playing at such an elite level, after starting out as a six-year-old in Sydney.

“I played for the Elwood Saints,” he said.

“I knew I wanted to make it in the game but I never thought it would be this big.”

But according to Cowboys spokesperson Graham Blackhall, it comes as no surprise that the 192cm boy from Wellington has made it into the big league, describing him as the ‘next big footy star’.

“He’s a local young football talent who has risen to the task of making his NRL debut with the Cronulla Sharks,” Blackhall said.

“This young man has endeavoured to make his dream come true like a lot of local young kids.”

Blackhall mentioned that Ferguson had worn the maroon and white for Wellington as a junior player.

“He played a few years with the Wellington Cowboys with the juniors and displayed a ravishingly gifted ability in playing tough footy above his weight and age.”

No-one was more proud of the young gun than his grandparents, Aboriginal elders Joan and Rex Sutherland, who made the trek to Sydney to watch him play.

Their trip may be the first of many, according to Sharks media manager Rob Willis, who said Ferguson had an excellent pre-season, performance-wise.

Another person impressed by Ferguson is Sharks coach Ricky Stuart, who gave him a glowing report in a recent interview.

But for Ferguson himself, he just wants to focus on the game and learn as much as he possibly can.

“The older guys are mad good at playing,” he said.

“I’ve already learned heaps of stuff.”

And it seems that he’s already developed a sense of club loyalty.

“I plan to stay with the Sharks,” he said.

Ferguson also had some advice to fellow young players from country areas.

“Don’t give up.

“Try to make your dreams come true, that’s what I did.”

has anyone been impressed with Fergo yet?
I might be being a bit harsh, but I'm not convinced he's as good as they say, hopefully today he'll show it.
Does anyone agree with me?

He missed plenty of tackles last week, so hopefully will show improvment in that area of his game this afternoon. Would like to see him given the ball with room to move, rather than just hit ups from dummy half; hopefully all of the backs will see some decent ball today, but that hasn't happened for a while now and I'm certainly not holding my breath.

That's an interesting stat Brad and it shows that he likes to get involved, but for mine he is a bit wasted in that role - he is big and lanky and has good speed, and I would like to see him get some good quality ball from the halves to put him one-on-one with defenders out wide.

blake fergurson

I am sorry.
This guy went to my skool, the kid has ability but o my dear lord he is definatly not up to first grade standard.

the last 2 weeks we have seen him make mistakes with the ball and also letting in 2 tries in defence.
i am all for trying to push players but if BEN ORCHER doesent get a go soon ahead of buffoons like fergo then we r in all sorts to be truthful.
