I really don't know what a winger is meant to do when your opposite number takes a bomb on the tryline. If Ron doesn't tackle him in the air he's ****ed really.

Good luck trying to stop the Roosters with those ones.

That’s what I thought when they changed that rule, and that was before they signed Dom Young

But didn’t actually come up much last season.

I didn’t think there was a need to change it though

Ron's only other option was let him land & score. **** almost scored anyway. Thankfully the ref recognised it wasn't dangerous. But his hands are tied otherwise.

Its like the Walsh shoulder charge - what is he supposed to do without giving up completely which is not an option.

I tend to agree. It's kind of like diving on a loose ball near the try line when you know you're off side. If you don't do it the other team will score.

Ronnie did everything right under those circumstances. 100% would have scored if he waited until he landed

Which is exactly why for most of the existence of the NRL that tackle was perfectly legal.

Now Ronnie can’t tackle him or try and contest the ball as he may be randomly decided as not genuine about it.

Good luck to anyone stopping dwz one on one there.
If he tucks his legs he’ll score before you’re even allowed to touch him.

I've only seen a quick replay of this so far and was confused.

So is a penalty in this scenario now the correct decision under the rules?
Because I must of missed that change in the off-season.

It was offseason before last season they tweaked tackling player in the air rules to include an attacking player, it I recall correctly
Penalty is correct

I think it should be a penalty for the tackle, and a sin bin if you put them in a dangerous position from it. Seems a pretty fair way to handle it.

I was fine with it staying no penalty for in the air.

Penalty, bin or send if dangerous, as needed.

Yeah should be ref's call depending on scenario l, not a perfect solution but making this a straight penalty has the potential to decide games.

If someone jumps and catches ball then tilts so they are coming down ball first there is nothing legal you can do (other than maybe try knock it our their hands) to stop a try.

It creates a scenario where the correct outcome by the rules (just let the guy score without touching him) is too ridiculous.

Before last season that’s a highlight reel try saver by Ronnie and we get the ball

Just need trindal and Nico to practise dropping it a bees short of the tryline, then we will be loving this adaption of the rule.

that’s the trick isn’t it, and why we haven’t seen it substantially abused.

One bee dick the other direction it’s a 7 tackle set.

Sharks in particular have preferred to play it safe and try crack through with a run

Had to make the tackle.

Plays like this are why looking at a wingers errors / penalties tally at the end of the year can be misleading.

That’s a positive play.

Should he have been sin binned?

Players get sin binned for pulling back players chasing a kick, this one seems just as likely to be a try.

Not that I’m complaining
