How are we a bottom of the 8 team, we had the 3rd best defence, only just missed out on second best.

Teams have injuries all year, every year, to use that as a reason we did well is kind of dumb imo, it's just part of the game. We also never had a full strength team this year, not for one single game.

I wont comment on this easy draw thing everyone brings up, thats also dumb
That’s your opinion and that was mine.

I really think he needed to do better in getting the team up for last week. Maybe he did and this is on the team?
A bit of each I'd reckon. We've effectively got a new spine (with one learning the ropes as a starting 7) and a rookie head coach this season. Knowing that didn't help me during the game I've got to say, but with a bit of distance I can't help but think we're still well ahead of where I expected at the beginning of the season.

I'd say we're still one big, mad front rower, proven Moylan successor and top shelf centre away from a GF, but that's not a huge reach and it feels like we're making the right moves to sort it out.

Sometimes I really don't understand Gus.

Some years he loves us, like 2018 when he picked us to win the comp.

Other years he just completely disrespectful towards us
I don't think he has much time for Gal and it shows

Love it , Gould says " they're out in 2 weeks " , we're a special now . So sick of this " we have played no one " bullshit , what about all those teams that got to meet bottom dwellers twice , you play what's in front of you . Who did the Cowboys or Souths roll that was so significant ?
I hope we put a score on Souths so Gal can ram it down his throat . And to be honest he shouldn't be saying too much when he's in charge at the Dogs , the season they have had , again .

Well he's not wrong. Gal is saying they all had rep players which isn't true. Both Melbourne and the Cowboys were massively depleted when we played them. Panthers and Souths both had a mostly full side and each game we conceded 20 points, which was well above our average for the back end of the year.

They are also both spot on in saying the game wasn't the expected semi final intensity.

We won when we had to. Some teams lost when they had to. You can’t just fluke coming 2nd and then think 10 other teams were better than us all year.

For example Roosters lost to Knights round 1 and we beat Knights round 3. It’s why we finished 2nd and others finished below us.

Also we played with 4-8 injuries almost every round so other teams/fans/commenters can’t blame injuries to other teams for us doing so well. I remember 1 or 2 games we looked more like Newtown than Sharks.

Storm and Roosters are knocked out and us still standing for a reason, because we earnt it

Yep, I don't know why people get their knickers in a knot. We've had a soft draw, it's a fact.

Didn't we equal our best record for wins in a season this year? Is this team on par with other great sharks teams? Not in my opinion. It is hard to compare across seasons however. But it still points to our finishing position being potentially higher than our strength as a side. (This doesn't mean we didn't earn our spot, you can only play who's in front of you).

Yes the roosters dropped that game, but I think if we swapped draws it's very likely our positions would have swapped too. They played Penrith, Melbourne, Parra, Cowboys, Souths, Broncos all twice, raiders, sharks once winning 9/14 games.

We played Melbourne and the Raiders twice, and the rest of the good sides once (I've included Brisbane as they were good most of the year), with two of those games being against teams without origin players (Melbourne and Cowboys). We won 4/10. Even if you say we would have won those two games against depleted sides anyway, our record against good teams this year is pretty poor.

Put it this way…. We all know deep inside we are not the 2nd best team in the comp.

I’m confused too why it’s so hard to take in, we got lucky in the draw.. what we should’ve do in return is make the most of our luck and play out of our skin in the finals when it really counts

I'm not disagreeing with him there, the draw worked out in our favor, it is what it is, no one is responsible for it we just took advantage of the opportunity as we should have.

I think we've spoken before HB about the fact we both actually quite like Gus and appreciate how much he loves and wants to improve the game.

I'm just sick and tired of him shitting on our premiership, especially considering 2016 was the finale of the spectacular 5 year plan, if the comp was so soft why couldn't Penrith get the job done with you as the mastermind Gus?

Wasn't it a soft comp because the roosters were ****? Well the Roosters and Melbourne are both out early this year so it must be another soft comp.. right?

Yeah agree I definitely wouldn’t say this is our second best squad ever.

Agree with most of the rest too but we still had to win all those games put in front of us, a lot of them when we were very injury depleted too. I think we had some big key players out that Storm game didn’t we?

We could of afforded probably 2 more losses and still finished 4th. Strong wins against Eels, Rabbits and even that Storm game set us up for a top 4 finish.

Couple key moments go our way against Cowboys and we would all be sitting here saying we will probably make the Grand final.

I just think we are being a little harsh on our season. All the experts had us 6th at best or outside the 8, the bookies had us about 9th and most in here thought a top 4 would be wishful thinking

Just regarding Hynes attempted field goal, he takes it on the 2nd tackle, 25 metres out. We could have taken another couple of hitups.

Also the below screenshot shows Moylan not in a position ready to receive the ball from Hynes in case he can’t get the kick off in time. I know he isn’t a kicker, but you’re a 6 so think like a 6. With defenders rushing out of the line it’s a great opportunity to attack a broken line. Also at least put the thought in cowboys mind that he might take the kick or Hynes might go to Moylan.

Plucking at straws I know.

Yeah we were missing Nicho and a forward I think. They were missing Munster and Grant. I guess the discussion was about us v the roosters though, if we lose two more and they win two more, they'd have been above us.

I still think we finished well above where we had expected, even if we dropped a couple more. If you told me we'd have 15/16 wins this year I'd have been pretty happy with that. We did everything we could with the draw handed to us, and you're right. If we had just gotten the win last week we'd be backing ourselves in with the week off to get the job done against the Raiders or Eels.

We've just been very lucky with how things have worked out. making the grand final with two games against Cowboys and the Raiders would have been the dream, as they are probably the two teams everyone else would have loved to play in the finals. As it stands, to get there we will have to go the hard way. If can, you can throw the whole soft draw concept out the window as we will have beaten Souths and Penrith in back to back weeks to do it. I'm not getting my hopes up for that just yet though.
