I’ve heard of situations like below…

Player takes option = $400k
Team takes option = $500k
Player and team both take option = $600k
Last part still doesn’t quite make sense because if the team can take the option for 500k, why would they agree to 600k. Assuming if the club takes the option the player can’t walk or can they?

It has definitely been done before in other sports. Player and team exchange envelopes saying whether they want to take the option or not.

Player wants to stay but club would prefer not = player gets a little less
Club wants him to stay but player might prefer a better deal = player gets a little more
Both parties are happy = player gets a good upgrade (becomes a slightly back-loaded deal because he has proven his worth).

Not saying this is what Bird has done - but it has definitely been done elsewhere in "mutual option" situations. My numbers are just a simple example. The club *could* save themselves $200k here by declining the option and gambling on him taking it, but why would they if they want to keep the player (and keep him happy)?

Interesting Bird has accepted effectively a 2 year deal, or guaranteed 2 yrs @ 550k, what’s everyone’s thoughts on him v Nikora being the better player & what is Nikora worth v Bird

I wouldn't re-sign Nikora.
Throw Wades money @ Crichton and partner him with Tieg.
Then use Nikoras money elsewhere

Bird probably... 150k more valuable than Nikora?
I'd even go maybe 50k higher if Bird hadn't had so many injury concerns.

He's approximately as good an edge player with a wider range of skills there, and with more versatility to be your back up 6, or 3rd choice/midgame fullback, and good midgame centre cover.

In saying that Nikora is extremely effective at one thing which is a relatively important part of his role, works harder in defence than Bird (although similar quality), more reliable from a health perspective but also looking a bit better currently as part of a generally good team vs a struggling team.
Think fact Sharks are going well also inflates Nikora's value a touch, I feel like if we had Bird instead of Nikora he'd look like he was worth more than 550k

All just approximates and guesses though... you don't see a lot of contracts under 500k shared so it's a bit harder to get a gauge.
Remember with current cap on average an NRL player is on approx 320k-330k but actually (apparently) half the top 30 players are on 180k or less.

Is Crichton playing well this year ?
Carrying an injury ?
He didn't do much throughout pre season I don't think, possibly with a niggle or too so was definitely underdone to start the year. Hence coming off the bench. Seems to be getting back to his usual self now though.

I’m wondering how long or if Tieg will extend with us, he appears happy but his uncle was Bomber & we all know how he parted ways with the Sharks.
He did sign an extension AFTER all the Bomber unpleasantness.
I think his heart is at the Sharks and think he would like to stay regardless of what happened in the past.

Tough... both can run hot and cold. I'd take Bird in a big moment, he's shown he can lift. But that money looks about right for where he is atm

Bird when happy and under a good coach is a weapon.. type of player you want in your team who would do anything to win.

Don’t know if there’s anything special about Nikora other then he’s solid and does the job which is why if the club wants him they shouldn’t spend too much on him so there’s more $ left to spend on bringing/upgrading the special players

Watching Bird play - it looks like he is suffering from a lack of direction in Dragons structure. It's like he gets the ball and needs to make stuff up as he goes.

Without Hunt they would be lucky to have won a game.

Chuck him in our current team and he would be totally different.

I don't think the Dragons are good at creating space or 1on1's for him. Moving into 6 probably doesn't help much either.
