Isnt this the problem with professional sport though? You have all this media coverage etc and we draw our opinions of players abd coaches from that. Like wayne bennett could be a real nice dude, and obviously is carrying a fair sausage on him to be snaggin these younger birds but all we see is him in costanza mode.
I don't recall ever having read to the contrary. His being put upon attitude is hard to understand from the outside and that is not a media misrepresentation.

Flannos the same. Met him once or twice and post games etc, always happy to say gday to fans etc.
Unless you know players and coaches personally it really is hard to know for sure. I flew down from Johannesburg to Cape Town before a test a month ago with the entire All Blacks side on the flight. I shook Sonny Bill's hand, got a photo and he was actually incredibly nice. I got the impression he wouldn't be that way if he wasn't on team business though. I wouldn't have said hi if he wasn't on team business either.

in a professional capacity, its really not our problem, if players wanna play for him then great
Completely agree. A lot of league players seem to be attracted to a father figure type.

Mate I have to agree with you there a fair bit. It comes with all professional sport in that capacity. Unless you meet the person face to face the problem is people judge these guys from the medias perspective. I have met Flanno a few times & he was good to me when I met him, gave me the time of day. Same as Galls, thats why I get sick of non Cronulla supporters bagging him all the time, Galls was a very nice bloke to me & we chatted away for a while.

Flanno IS a great man manager . Definitely can be fiery .
But , does have the respect of his senior players group , which IS most important .
Calls it how he sees it . Pretty easy to talk to after the game when out and about.
Obviously like Gal. doesn't suffer fools .
No doubt Lyall is AWESOME , but perhaps being with the coach and players 24/7 game days and making retention calls would wear thin with Flanno .
Unfortunately does make sense that one had to go if things were getting out of hand .

I see fullback as a glory position and it pays accordingly. Val won't be prepared to admit he can't hit the top five at this stage I would hope.

Don't get me wrong. If Val would take 600k to play on the wing it would be worth working that into the cap. I don't see it though.

Val doesn't come across as an egomaniac, he seems to want to do what's best for the team.

Where has it been quoted he is being paid unders? I thought he was heavily upgraded when Barba left.

CRONULLA’S AMBITIOUS MOYLAN PLAN

The Matt Moylan-James Maloney club switch is seen by many good judges as a win-win, with Maloney to provide halves experience next to young gun Nathan Cleary and the younger Moylan to extend Cronulla’s premiership window.

Most expect Moylan to wear the No.6 jersey in a straight swap, but according to senior The Daily Telegraph reporter David Riccio the Sharks have a bigger, more ambitious plan, involving a return to the wing for Valentine Holmes and a swoop for Roosters star Mitchell Pearce.

“I think Moylan will play fullback, I really do, and I say it because you only have to look at the influence Ben Barba had at the Sharks - the out the back play and his ability to pass the footy,” Riccio said on NRL 360.

“Valentine Holmes doesn’t have that in his game, not yet anyway, and how long does a coach have to continue to play a fullback that scored three tries last season, compared to the 2016 season for Valentine Holmes of 19 tries on the wing?

“So you push Valentine Holmes back to the wing, you play Moylan at fullback - with the ability to pass and play that five-eighth role anyway - I think he’ll play fullback.

“They have to land Pearce. Then a Townsend-Pearce situation may arise or a Kyle Flanagan-Pearce situation may arise.”

Young Flanno should be a loooong way behind Townsend, goal kicker or not.

Long term though I think Pearce - Flano will be good. Obviously next year will be Townsend but from 2019 onwards it’s fair game

Young Flanno could play well with Pearce to lead the side around and Flanno to kick at 80%. Look how well Cleary has gone. Flanno could be the same.

Young Flanno looks as good as Townsend did at that age.

Is young Flanno as good as Jeff Robbo at that age .
Surely there's some black and white footage available
