James Segeyaro’s management claim the hooker is not contracted to Leeds in 2017

MATT LOGUE, The Daily Telegraph
January 23, 2017 5:24pm

IT’S the messy contract dispute that could cost Cronulla the signature of James Segeyaro.

Segeyaro claims he doesn’t require a release from Leeds, because he technically doesn’t have a contract with the English club for 2017.

The hooker agreed to a two-deal extension with the Rhinos in September, but it’s understood these negotiations were not finalised.

Segeyaro’s management claim Leeds haven’t notified the RFL about Segeyaro’s uncompleted deal and are playing hard ball over parting ways.

“We will go through the appropriate channels to resolve the issue but we are totally confident that James is not contracted to Leeds in 2017,’’ Segeyaro’s agent Sam Ayoub said.

The Rhinos, however, insist the hooker has breached his contract and have slapped a $425,000 transfer fee on his head.

Leeds boss Gary Hetherington confirmed his club had engaged Australian-based lawyers to sue Segeyaro for refusing to return to England for the final two years of his deal.

The hooker’s management must now prove their position is correct to pave the way for Segeyaro to join Cronulla.

But with Leeds standing their ground, the contract dispute could be headed for the courts.

Cronulla have also inserted a clause in their contract for Segeyaro, stating they won’t register the deal if the hooker doesn’t receive a release.

The Sharks are refusing to pay the transfer fee to snare the No. 9’s signature, with the overall contract threatening to reach almost $1 million because clubs will need to offer the rake a deal at market value.

They would also be forced to pay a 50 per cent loading — $212,500 — on the transfer fee, although that would be exempt from the cap and is directed to the NRL’s welfare and education fund.

If Segeyaro can finalise his disagreement with Leeds, he is expected to be cleared to return to the NRL.

NRL officials have indicated they would register a contract for the former Penrith rake.

The NRL would also ensure Segeyaro is paid market value if he linked with the Sharks.

Maybe a couple against **** teams like the Tigers. As bad as they look there is a few try scorers there. Heck anything's possible with NRL refs.

I always look at a team and think who would the Sharks like off them, looking at that team it's pretty bland make a case I guess for gagai (in the right frame of mind) or Saifiti, they may snag a game or 2 but will be a long season, at the end of some decent slappings.

Just fired off a letter to the Dolphins regarding trial game at their ground .
Greedy pr#x

t like to complain about the ticket prices you are charging for a trial game ( Broncos vs Sharks ) A mate and.I were fully prepared to jump on a train and come up and watch this trial , UNTIL I saw the exorbitant prices you're charging in addition to the booking fee .
You've got to be kidding if think $35 is what fans should be expected to pay for a trial . It's cheaper to watch a Comp game at Suncorp . If you had of charged $10 - $15 we'd have come and you could of made up the difference in beers sales .
You don't deserve to fill your ground on the night ,as you should . If NOT sack those responsible.

I'd take Mata'utia and Barnett in a blink of an eye, both are young and have a go.

NRL's fault not the clubs get into them. The cost of hosting a trial is atrocious the NRL should be using the trials as a way to gain exposure in areas that don't normally get games.

Don't blame you,

I thought the trails were taken to other area's to promote the game.
