Mako Shark
In one of the most bizarre episodes in the club's history, the Sharks announced in July 1986 that infamous doctor Geoffrey Edelsten planned to buy the club after just one week of negotiations.
Edelsten and his glamorous wife Leanne were paraded with the Sharks board and players outside the Regent Hotel in Sydney on the 6pm news - the first anyone outside the club had heard of it.
Needless to say, the NSWRL were not happy, and though the Edelstens attended the next Sharks home game, the plan quickly collapsed.
The circumstances which forced the club to consider privatisation was the take-over of Cronulla's major sponsors, Ronson, and the subsequent fall-through of all of the sponsorship money. Cronulla Leagues Club eventually came to the rescue with an extra grant.
