Injury was end of Feb so probably approx 5 months on from surgery

Good for him to get back on the field and can start to be a bit more involved in training even if it is just stretching and running with rehab group on the peripheries

Should be ready to go for pre season. Hopefully they throw him another one year deal. Good to have some depth at hooker next year.

I agree regarding the 1 year deal.

Are we able to throw him a development contract? Probably wrong, but they don’t count to the salary cap? I’d love to give him another opportunity. Would be a shame to see him lost to the game forever. Not saying he was anything special, but after working your way back to the NRL and then coming down with an injury is just heartbreaking. Give him another chance somehow

Not sure if there are rules around who can be on a dev contract, have to meet salary criteria but not sure if a 43 NRL game player could be considered 'development' even if it would kinda make sense coming back from injury
We have a development hooker already who I believe will be considered in our top 30 for next season so there may not be a top squad spot available for King

You’re talking about Patterson, yeah? I read somewhere he will be in our 30 next year, but things change. Would be happy to swap him and King(this years position). Just depends on, like you said, the rules surrounding eligibility

Matt Frawley (31 nrl games, 20 super league games) is on a development contract with Canberra I’m pretty sure.

Could work with us regarding King. Maybe.

Bit of talk on it at the kennel. Apparently Matt Frawley (32 NRL games, 21 ESL games) is/was on Canberra’s development squad.

Haha na I just remember reading about it somewhere at the start of the year haha

I also think Lachlan Crocker for manly could be on one too and he’s played 25 odd games.

Rules can be flaunted for the right team.
Just look at the Roosters and Bunnies for recent evidence.

There are no limits on who can be listed as a development player. The development list is just the new name for the “second tier cap”.

You can have 0-6 players on the development list. Their contracts are $60k plus match payments, and it does not count against the “tier 1” salary cap unless they play a game or are upgraded into the top 30.

The one restriction they do have is that you can not use a player from the dev list unless you have no healthy options in the top 30... so if King was to be on the dev list he wouldn’t be able to play unless both Brailey and Paterson were unavailable. Probably Tracey too.

This guy could make next years squad a bit more interesting. If I remember right from that far back and the little he got to play, he looked pretty good for us.

Do we think Brailey will become a true 80 minute hooker for 2021? That'd shake up the bench, especially when SJ returns and replaces what looks like being Tracey in the starting squad

Patterson comes into top 30 next season so not sure if there'll be a spot for King
He'd be cheap and he'd be good at that price but serious questions around how he'll hold up

Brailey should be sweet to play 80 minutes next year but doesn't mean he has to play 80 every week. If Connor (or whoever) is good enough to be in the top 17 I don't mind utility/cover taking the last bench spot over fourth forward. Perhaps even have some games he comes in and some games he doesn't depending on opposition.

If we're ever to achieve our dream of a squad made up purely of guys who are 50/50 chances each week, we'll need to find a spot for him.

Does seem like we can afford to carry a utility based on how Bomber's used the bench this season (with and without 4 forwards). Not sure if Patterson of King have utliity value? Otherwise Tracey might end up our new Capewell (Beale might be more apt)

Each of these players has a little bit of utility value, but probably should be viewed as hookers only.

Paterson CAN play in the halves, and King CAN play as a running forward, though I wouldn’t say they cover those spots well enough to warrant picking them over others. E.g. Soro/Billy/Tracey all add value in other roles and can still cover hooker in a pinch.

Interesting, thanks Burgo.
Fingers crossed the lower grades are back in 2021 so these guys can get some game time. Could be a long wait behind Brailey!
