Chad,

As you probably know my eldest has been playing for the last two years, lots of tears but i haven't seen a major injury in mini league (UNDER 6s 7s & 8s) form any club (im sure some boys do get injured but not often) Mini league players aren't usually given positions it sort of just comes naturally to each player where they stand. Excepting a few of the boys who have a better understanding of the game they usually play as the dummy half and first receiver. Don't stress about players being a lot bigger than him as the comp you would play in doesn't have a lot of kids from backgrounds that produce the "larger boys" (if it does happen they are usually tackled with a stacks on the mill method).

The most important thing is that he has fun so watch which club you play for as some clubs seem to focus more on results rather than enjoyment and learning how to play. My youngest will be four in April will most likely start playing next year, give me a call if you like as it's a good chance they will be team mates.

The safety regulations that are in place in schools and in Junior sport are strong and the majority of clubs have trained professionals to assist with injuries etc. Having said that Im sure that there will be times when the young bloke will have a whinge but that will happen in any contact sport.
I know I will be the subject of abuse after this but I only played limited league at school and for South Newcastle when I was a kid for a few games. I actually played Rugby Union for over 20 years as a hooker or loose head prop. Amazing I still look so good! Played for Wanderers up here in Newcastle and 4 years in Dubbo for the Rhinos when I was teaching in Narromine. Was lucky enough to play in a few first grade premiership sides.
Always followed the league and much prefer to watch league over union

Anyway just let him decide!

Played from 6's to 16's at Engadine Dragons. Centre & Wing. Didn't reach the accolades as some of you one here of course! :)
Had a couple of rib cartilage injuries and a few ankle injuries.
Worst was torn ligaments in the right ankle. Has never been the same, still have some pain even now (over 20 years ago now)
but didn't stop me playing until later on.
All sports get injuries. I had mates who played soccer and some of them have had horrific injuries over the years.
Not as many broken noses but injuries that saw them out for long periods anyways.

terrible injury...I cracked my sternum, broke 3 ribs and tore a heap of rib cartilage(not during football), it just wouldn't come good so i retired. But i may give the masters games a go in the coming hears, if i can get my health issues in order

9-15's

9-11's at cronulla caringbah as a half

12-15's at gymea gorillas as a centre, hooker and half.

No injuries then leave to play soccer with friends and do my knee.

Im not particularly a footy player because im to small & not muscular enough but I played once in a fun 7's comp for school a few years ago, I played a few games but my first game was pretty interesting, I played on the wing & on my first touch thanks to a good cut out ball I scored after running 20mtrs to the corner but then in the 2nd half same thing almost happened again but this time a few huge blokes had my measure because they saw it coming this time, about 2 mtrs away I got absolutely hammered & rolled about 1-2 mtrs hahaha... After that I know what big hits are like lol

Played First grade for 350 games
Represented state and country.
Also coached to 3 premierships.

But i still find everyone else on heres professional opinion of every player in every position truly insightful. And their thoughts on coaching.

Seriously. Played growing up, from under 7s i think. or 6s. Played school boy footy, and a little bit in highschool, but was never committed. A fair few mates went on to the NRL. Our highschool had a good thing going with Knights and Bulldogs, which saw alot of blokes head down there to do junior development. A mate of mines brother (2 years older) played centre in the 2004 Bulldogs grandfinal win.

In all honesty, a 4 year old playing, not really an issue. I've got a 4 year old and he is keen to start. Up here its under 6's as the lowest grade, but i think 4 year olds are cool to play. Obviously its hard to get too hurt as a young bloke. Im also looking at junior coaching development, doing the programs etc and being a junior coach.
Its not like the early 90s where ya dad was ya coach. My old man used to make tackling bags out of old work overalls filled with rags and sand.

Let him play as soon as he wants Chad, if you think you & your wife might let him play down the track you & your wife should bite the bullet & let him play now.

I honestly believe there will be less chance of him getting hurt/injured down the track if he starts now as opposed to him giving it a go when he's older, its amazing the techniques the kids learn very very early on compared to a kid that joins in when he's 10,11 or 12, from then on those kids are playing catch up compared to the other kids who get the basic skills when they were 5, especially defensively.

You will also find he wont be as timid, soccer's a great sport as well, he learn coordination from that plus get some kicking skills so if you can manage it let him do both, failing that he cant do both make sure you get out there with him & kick & soccer & footy ball around with him.

but juniors is safe as houses never saw anyone injured just watch the school cups thats where the injuries happen

Whilst still in Sydney played Jnr Rep footy for Manly,Johnnie Gibbs was our coach once at Brookie, got a tour to various places inc Canberra, where we were thumped in every Grade, they played a wide game- we were traditional up the middle must've been 12 or 13yo. Lock or second row, normal breaks sprains, gouges, pinches, punches, stomps etc but only once i got properly hurt that i remember, when the scrum collapsed.(mustve been second row) Future prospects gone when moved to Vic, Union was a weak poor substitute for a while, then AFL(There was no League). My son has played League here for the last 3 yrs and under 10's this year with scrums and proper positions i believe. He is for a provincial Anglo saxon Kid huge 5ft 1 and 60kg at early 9 yo, however in his footy team the sizes are bigger and every opp team has 1-3 players big or bigger than him and predominant players in comp are Polynesian/Islander boys.No serious injuries noted yet, kids go very hard(but in good spirits generally) but are well protected. I look over at the 14's and 16's however and there are some big size differences/disparities and am glad my boy is big if he chooses to continue. Two players from his club have 3-5 yr Storm Contracts, there is a pathway here now to the NRL the facilities are second to none and NRLs Sydney teams u16 and u18's i guess play against Storm JNRs on his teams ground. I would think it would be the 14's/16's up where the real injuries may occur.

Yeah, played a bit. Mostly outside centre - shows my age.

Got smashed up a bit and sometimes pay for it now.

Have to admit my worst sporting injury was playing grade baseball though.

My worst injury was riding my push bike. Hit a rock and wobbled; handle bars right in the testicles. Hurt more than breaking my arm, foot, multiple concussions, dislocations, and split heads I got from playing any sport.

Was thinking about making my debut this year haha.
Have never played the game but was keen to give it a crack for a bit of fun socially after finally not having to work weekends..

Turn 30 in July so not getting any younger and always wondered what it would be like playing footy with 2 less players on the field.. That and miss jugs with the boys in the clubrooms or in the bus on the way back from games..

Even turned up to my local club rooms at signups (Sutherland Loftus) but don't have enough players apparently so looking at my options for clubs nearby..
Anyways hope to be able to post back in this thread later and contribute to having played
