What was his name mate? I lived right near Lang Park in the 70’s and 80’s and used to walk to the ground practically every weekend in those days to watch the Match of the Day. Followed the Brisbane Comp very closely.

Thanks mate. Not sure I remember him, but I’m guessing he would of played some games when Bruce Astill was around in the very late 70’s until the mid 80’s. I think both Bob Mccarthy and Wayne Bennett coached Souths back in those days

I think he was early/mid 80’s. Not sure whether Astill was still involved. I think Bruce was actually involved with Souths Juniors when I was there though. One of the Astills was a year or two below me I believe.

Apart from the GF - Round 9 2016 when I realised we would win comp. I told my mates, sent club an email, became a member (got the last membership pack) and told Brad Fittler a few weeks later at a chance meeting.

Playing Broncos who were leading comp and us 2nd with a few others. Our attack blistering and blew them away leading 30-0 at halftime. The Broncos came back in 2nd half but we defended tenaciously in last 10min to win 30-28. What I saw in 1st half game me the belief we could attack and the last 10m the confidence we could get into a grind and tough it out which we later did in the GF. That was the start in my belief in 2016 and with every win in our run, the more confident I grew.

This game stands out the most as it was the day in my 50ys of following Sharks, watching every NRL game, year after year that I that I knew we would win comp.

I never actually saw this one. Was away camping and listened on the radio. Was losing my mind when the comeback was on.

Hard to go past that 2016 Canberra game. Everything that happened in and around it... It took a special team to come through. That was the one where you thought Jesus, we're the real deal. Even more than the winning streak. There was toughness, character, even the coaching decisions. Facing the Canberra fanatics in the awesome cauldron they created. That game was our gf rehearsal... Something special

That was a great game. That run / try from Prior on half time is one of the all time best front rower tries. No one was stopping him on that run.

Someone asked Flanno recently what the belief was in the camp that year. He singled our Prior and said that year Prior went into every game believing he was the better than his opposite. Didn't matter who the opposition was.

Remember Beale getting the ball stripped in the last 10 seconds...

Yeah it was the game where we played well in the daylight but when the lights came on we were a different team. Broncos liked the twighlight.

Man I used to love the Wednesday night games from Leichhardt. Dad would let me stay up late to watch, we'd have a cup of tea and Vegemite crumpets with the fire going.

Bloody great memories.

Me too. Went to high school up the road from Holy Cross not too far from Leichardt Oval and attended many games. Played footy against Benny Elias and both Brett & Scott Gale (Holy Cross) in local Balmain schools knockout, had Kevin Hardwick in our side as attended same school and class or should I say, I was in his side as he was the star of the team. In later years went out on the piss with them many times as a friend of mine was licensee at Benny's parents pub in West Ryde. Ahh the memories and the good old days. **** this aging caper.

I would like to see it back but with games on 4 days a week there would no room to squeeze in another night plus the game has become too fast to expect teams to play 3 games in 8-10 days every few weeks if still in knockout comp.
