What do you do then with Ison?
He is a good year away from being ready for regular first grade.

By mid next year, if he is playing well enough to compete for Wills spot then good. May the best man win.

If he has the spot won for 2028 and we need to shop Will around and throw in a bit if coin, it won't break the bank.

Ok. In that case he is gone. We are now putting all our eggs into Ison.
Where? It sounds as though Castleford is his other option. I can see a world in which he takes a year and weighs up Castleford/superleague against a potential PNG deal. I guess he could be negotiating that PNG deal now though too.

Not sure where. I hope he agrees to another year. That would be perfect.

I just feel he has already done that with us at unders (take a one year deal), and wouldnt begrudge him getting a bigger deal elsewhere.

I'm just concerned if he goes next year its going to leave a massive hole.

Agreed, you couldn't possibly blame him for taking the best deal he can get.

I'd be okay with giving him 500 next year and a 300 option for the year after or something like that. I guess I'm still just unconvinced with this squad. If we make a grandfinal and just miss out with him being good all year, it will be a huge hole as you said. If we limp out of the finals or even miss them we'll need to be commiting to a rebuild so it won't be an issue.

Ison is an absolute nobody,
until he isn't.

There are plenty of blokes who have played about 20 games of NSW Cup, even in spine, who never became better NRL players than Will Kennedy.
What you do about Ison is he keeps trying to fight off Taj Ford for a spot in the Jets until he is ready to fight off Will Kennedy for NRL and then you take a good problem to have and figure it out.

I'd rather be thinking Ison is killing it Cup, clearly too good for that level, but Kennedy is going okay in NRL and on 500k how we making this work, than thinking oh **** we have no NRL quality fullback Ison is not it, I miss Will Kennedy.

We've been trying to replace Kennedy for years - Tracey, Miller, Taukamo, Dykes... seems a good thing we kept Kennedy over going all in on any of those guys, besides obviously you could argue for Tracey if you really wanted to.
No reason, at this stage, Ison is any different.

Obviously this has either been the wrong strategy (although I'd argue it is more what a Penrith or Storm would do) or just has been either poorly executed or been a bit unlucky. I'd probably say the last one.
Roosters conversely are more the pay up for the superstar and make it work method of success. Broncos probably a little more in the middle - but they got the like of ARey at great value and their Ison who was too good for Cup but not ready for what they needed in NRL they were lucky to steal back from the Warriors who restricted him signing anywhere else he would.
