finishing 4th in the new system means we play 1st week one. Meaning we would play melbourne in melbourne. tough ask but even if we lose we play again next week.
I got;
1. Melbourne Storm
2. Canterbury Bulldogs
3. South Sydney Rabbitohs
4. Manly Gaylord's
5. Cronulla Sharks
6. North Queensland Cowboys
7. Brisbane Broncos
8. New Zealand Warriors
I understand your logic MB but I'd take the second chance every time. Look at a team like Manly, not playing the best footy at the moment but will likely hit form if they can get their full team on the park. Facing an in form Manly in the first week of the semis isn't very appealing, or finishing 7th or 8th and possibly playing one of the QLD teams up there.
Yeah, Merritt is no mug back there. He was so good at the back end of last year Souths fans were calling him the messiah. Inglis will only be gone for like 2 or 3 matches I reckon.
Yeah fair enough. I guess there's a chance that if you finish 5th to 8th you end up playing the eventual premiers and get a narrow loss, but you could make the top 4 and play a bludger of a team in the first week, and even in the third week too.
I think making a GF you can always hope for wanting it more securing a result, but not so much in other finals.
But if the top 8 reflected the form and skill of each team, with 1 being best and 8th being worst, I reckon finishing 5th is the best outcome.
You play 8th, who are the worst team, and should beat them comfortable. You then play a team coming off a loss which I reckon can be good in finals, you then play a team that's had a week off and hopefully have lost momentum because of that. Three games you've gone into with IMO an advantage.

Coming 5th is great if your side has confidence and a good run of form to end the season. It can be mighty embarrasing to lose to 8th and be thrown out in week 1. Tigers/Warriors will most likely be the 8th seed two teams we have struggled with in the past.
4 minimum.
