Who should we sign for 2020?

Thought I'd get the ball rolling.

I reckon we should target Peachey for a bench utility spot and offload one of the Braileys.

Obviously need a winger or two as well.

Gallen & Feki already leaving
Others I think without a contract are Capewell, Gray, Sorensen, Kennedy, Lumelume

Quite clear looking at this we need a couple fringe second rowers/locks expecting at least one will probably get some games and 1 starting winger and a backup winger who is at least as good as Gray but younger with more upside.

If Jayden and/or Flanju are allowed to leave mid contract we will be desperate to have a passable backup hooker and half (perhaps splash a bit more and get one better guy who can do both).

Is that on the assumption Capewell is going?

Good point. Maybe? I would rather Peachey's kind of bench impact be built into our formula rather than Capewell's kind of utility.

Basically to me, Peachey covers both Capewell's bench role and the bench hooker role in one player.

We have enough talent coming through we really don’t need to sign a lot of players. I think most of our efforts should be spent retaining what we have. Should be a quiet off season for us. The only major signing I think we need is a winger. Apart from that maybe a young forward or two to replenish who we lose.

We're already 2 positions short of a top 30, we're losing Gallen and Feki for sure, are likely to lose Flanno Jr, and may lose J Brailey.

That's 5 to 6 positions to fill.

If you think we have 5 to 6 players outside our top 30 right now that should come into the squad, name them.

I'd say Trindal, Wilton will come in but you're right we're still short a few

This is not 100% accurate but full contract lists here: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...s/news-story/5fb11dade926db640d773c81124bb849

Pretty slim pickings so I'd guess around 4 of our 7 to 9 available spots get filled with internal upgrades (jets/under 20s promoted) - they'd be towards the back end of the top 30 as a couple of the best current ones likely to move into top 30 in next few days.
Sorensen is probably the main one worth keeping we haven't re-signed yet, as he knows our system and has generally gone okay.

Unfortunately given where our finances are at and who we have in our side we will likely be rocking a fairly inexperienced and cheap range of players in the 20-30 range so depth could be an issue. Ideally though some of them step up (like Nikora & BHU have) and it's all sweet.

On the halves/hookers front
Nu Brown showed some promise with us but never locked down a spot here or there. Could be a okay squad filler at the right price though.
Ryley Jacks played a lot for Storm? But I don't remember seeing him play for Titans and hasn't played much.
Cust has had some good games, expect they'll keep him though. Zac Woolford has had some wraps but would have to be cheaper than we are paying Braileys
The other Sione Katoa is available to really **** with Marge but also why would we let Jayden go and sign him unless it was for less money
Signed to 2020 but if Flanju left Keighran from Warriors could be interested in being our 3rd choice half, beats being their fourth choice and if rumours are correct unpopular with some of the team.
Given we are looking for a backup to long term hooker a decent older player could be a good fit, Baptiste maybe if he was really cheap and pending injury assessment down the track as he's just done an ACL.

For wings
Gideon hasn't really cracked on but an environment change could help, but is another small winger so not ideal for what we'd be seeking.
Is Tristan Sailor any good? He'd be big I assume, or Rabbits Mawene Hiroti is 20 and played some games for them and is a tall dude.
Could be a case of buying the best two NSW/Qld Cup wingers (or decent sized fullbacks) that don't have NRL contacts and hoping one can get in front of Sione Katoa... Ronaldo & Lumelume (if we kept him) apparently more centre than winger but could be trained up further to fill this need

I'd probably just keep Capewell for that specific role. I reckon he'd possibly be a little bit cheaper as well.

Would Peachy be on Capewell money? Would keep Capewell in that case (unless capes is leaving as much for a full time starting gig as a raise..?)

Good point.

May be best to look at the second tier in general including how our depth compares to the broader comps. If our depth is carving up, I guess there's no upgrades in that comp available. If our depth is **** in those positions compared to other teams, let's go for them.

We're talking about a starting 13 position being available, plus another winger that's gunna play probably at least 10 games a season, in a team that's been consistently top 8 for a while now.

Even that second winger must think there's a shot at playing in a GF side if all the stars align.

Not sure. Just heard that he's potentially going back to the Panthers.

At this point in time, Peach would be on substantially more I would think.

Yeah I expect he got a good pay packet to go to Goldy.

Our wing depth pretty much becomes Dugan, Katoa, Ronaldo, Kennedy, Lumelume... you could say Xerri if Ronaldo, Lumelume or Ferris played centre instead of him (if Ferris got a contract).
Ideally we need someone else to come in of skill between Dugan and Katoa and someone else to come in around, or just behind, Katoa in depth (this could be a U20s guy making the jump).
Katoa and them would then be Jets starters with both vying for NRL opportunities through their own good form or NRL injuries. Even better if two players clearly ahead of Katoa came in but that might be a bit greedy given what we can afford to spend.

Ronaldo, Lumelume, Ferris playing for Jets starting centre roles and opportunity to get in front of Jets wingers if they can.

Dugan #1 cover for FB and centre so the 3rd string winger, katoa or otherwise, could well get some games but there is also a decent opportunity for best of our jets centres.

If that's the case, I really hope we give Katoa time this season. Feki is going anyway.

I would rather go into next season knowing where Katoa sits. He could really go either way at this point.

There's been some garbage players selected ahead of him so I dunno if that means he's a write-off or not.

I’d have given him another shot ahead of Feki and Gray by now personally, as I think they’ve been just as bad if not worse plus he’s younger and staying on with us.

BUT if Bomber thinks Katoa is a clear number 3 out of those guys then go ahead and leave him in reserves because we have potential to go a long way with this team this year so play the best we have available.

I’m not worried about Snowmans theory that because Feki isn’t doing great we need to keep trying worse players until one randomly somehow excels beyond any reasonable expectation. If Feki is the best play Feki, just don’t cross field kick to him FFS and sign someone better for next year

Brenko Lee, Bevan French, Josh Cleeland, Tepai Moeroa/Manu Ma’u... I’d give them all a shot
