A story from a UK newspaper about a Cronulla player I have never heard of. Anyone know who Shad Royston is?

HALIFAX have snapped up Doncaster's highly-rated Australian utility back Shad Royston.

Fax were first linked with the Australian - who does not count on the overseas quota - last week, forcing boss Martin Hall to play down "speculation" that he had already sealed a deal with the former Cronulla star.

But the move was finally completed overnight when Royston, who has turned down full time rugby in South Yorkshire, faxed a signed contract from Sydney, leaving Hall to celebrate the capture of one of the National League's outstanding backs - and take a side swipe at the rumour mill.

"Talking to a player and signing a player are not the same thing," fumed Hall.

"You are always going to get rumours, but until the player's signature is on the contract nothing has been finalised.

"I want to make it clear that, contrary to what has been reported elsewhere, Shad Royston did not sign for Halifax until yesterday.

"Shad's been over here for a couple of years, first with Batley and then Doncaster, and he sees this as another step up for him.

"He's excited by the quality of signings we have made, and potentially might make, and was keen to come here.

"He's come from a good coaching background at Cronulla and is still very ambitious to play at the highest level he can."

i could be wrong but i think he was a promising outside back signed from queensland ,sharks beating off several clubs for his signature but only played a season in the lower grades never reaching any great heights and then moved on .Is there anyone who can find out for sure?

I don't care how good he is or was; Shad is simply one of the most stupid names of all time. I believe Sharks have a new policy where they no longer permit ridiculous monikers onto our playing roster, hence the departure of the likes of Peewee Moke and Hutch Maiava.

So I guess we are not in the hunt for Petero Civoniceva? :D

you guys are all so tight, you aren't wanting people to play for your club because their name isn't common. if this was true for all of the NRL clubs then the players would all be called John, Tom, and Luke. the players shouldn't be discriminated due to their native names, and if you think they should be go find a different sport to follow, chances are you will still be angry.

He was named after a fish: the shad is a common fish in both Europe and America. It's also short for Shadrach, the Babylonian name of one of the three Hebrew men who were cast into a fiery furnace and miraculously survived. Apart from that, still don't know who he is.

Good work Hammerhead but after all of that research I am sure that none of us are any the wiser as to who he actually is; and besides, if his parents were going to name their son after a fish, why not make it a mighty Shark! :)

Well he isn't with the Sharks anyway, so it doesn't matter what he does.
