Alright guys, lets think ahead for the future, there are a couple of guys that come to mind that are out of contract, if you know anyone else, please specify who it is.

Could you also post in this thread how much you would be willing to pay for the player you choose? :drunk cheers.

Off the top of my head: Daniel Vidot, Krisnan Inu (was desperately hoping he'd leave parra this year) Jake Mullaney, Ben Matulino.

And Peter Wallace if the broncs let him go, sure. Would love Corey Paterson too if the knights were stupid enough to release him.

Unless one of our halves become the next best thing;

Thurston, obviously. Best half in the game, it would be like not chasing Johns, Langer, Stuart, Lockyer, Daley, Fittler etc. in their prime. How many times this year did Ricky say during a post game presser something along the lines of "if we had a guy like Thurston we win that game. Simple as that." ?

I'd like a list but cause I know there is massive names off contract at the end of 2010.

inglis, hayne, civo(to back up snowy and dougy from the bench) and greg bird.

This isn't like a 'my personal dream team' thing. Those guys are all locked up, bar civo, and I wouldn't want him here cos he'd cost a heap and is too old/injury prone. He's said he wants to go back to the broncs anyway.

As for thurston, if we want to be a one man team then sure. He's also apparently a bit of a prick, but meh, he can play footy. I'd rather see us go with Townsend and Kelly (our own Thurston/Presto?) after Barrett retires, unless we could get Wallace or a similar organising half and play Kelly outside him. Thurston= too much money, too much ego, death of the team when he leaves/retires, getting on, constant speculation he'd be going to rugby or tiddlywinks or whatever.

Signing the huge names almost never works anymore unless you get them just before they get really big. The way to the top is clear, its just difficult, but its the greatest strength of the salary cap- grow the game, develop your own juniors, do it well, coach them well, encourage them to be loyal and guide them with experienced seniors (a la Matt Geyer and Mike Crocker at Melbourne, Orford and Bell at Manly). Canberra are trying to do it now, Tigers have done it well it would appear. Panthers seem to be doing it a bit haphazardly. Bulldogs purchases are the exception, not the rule for success.

Anyway, some that are off contract in 2010:

Penrith:
Frank Pritchard
Nigel Plum
Petero Civoniceva
Joseph Paulo
Maurice Blair
Shane Elford
Frank Puletua
Jarrod Sammut
Michael Gordon
Gavin Cooper
Brad Tighe
Kevin Kingston

Canberra:
Glen Buttriss
Justin Carney
Shaun Fensom
Danny Galea
Marc Herbert
Brett Kelly
Cy Lasscock
Scott Logan
Josh McCrone
Troy Thompson
Trevor Thurling
Alan Tongue
Daniel Vidot

Wests Tigers:
Tim Moltzen
Beau Ryan
Taniela Tuiaki
Blake Lazarus

Roosters:
Nick Kouparitsas
Anthony Minichiello
Martin Kennedy
Willie Mason
James Aubusson
(+ some others- Mose Masoe, Sonny Tuigamala and Lopini Paea but no sources)

Edit: Added some more teams. These are less well sourced, so take them with a grain of salt and not as gospel, but should be pretty accurate I reckon.

Parramatta:
Jarryd Hayne
Luke Burt
Eric Grothe
Krisnan Inu
Daniel Mortimer
Nathan Cayless
Feleti Mateo
Fuifui Moimoi
Johnathon Wright
Weller Hauraki
Tim Robinson
Brendan Oake

St George Illawarra:
Matt Prior
Neville Costigan
Nick Emmett
Daniel Fepuleai
Jarrod Saffy
Jaime Soward
Michael Weyman

There are others that were off contract for 2009 and may well have got a one year deal for 2010 are Jon Green, Ricky Thorby and Michael Lett.

I would jump all over pritchard but I remember in 08 he had severe attitude problems when he immediately demanded a release to go to french rugby, and once he didnt get it he basically stopped trying, thats a real concern.

Greg Bird (every cent we had left)
Justin Carney(pretty damn good winger or center)
Marc Herbert (with Josh McCrone they would be the best halfs paring since Alfie langer and Wally lewis)
Josh McCrone
Alan Tongue(coz he is another Paul Gallen but can play every position and doesnt make as many mistakes)
Daniel Vidot(coz i like the fire in this kid)

I think Tim Moltzen would be a great buy for the club. He is young and has already shown plenty of potential. He has shown the can can be very succesful at fullback, halfback, 5/8 and even centre. Although I think his best position is halfback, Id think hed be a great pairing with Barret in the halves.

as far as a halfback goes, I'm hoping scotty porter will be a star. he already possesses a great kicking game. if a bit of barret can rub off, then we'll be fine in that spot. he'll also have experienced guidance/help from john morris.
anyway i agree that tim moltzen would be a great buy for us!

Yeah Moltzen is a gun, played mostly at fullback last season but looks to be shifted permanently into the halves if the Tigers get Tuqiri's signature, as Sheens is looking to play him at fullback.

Honestly its hard to answer this because we have a totally new team this year so i think we have to see what risks worked and what didn't.

We will need a good half tho unless Kelly is a natural.

Added the stains and parra.

My great hope for next year: Flanagan makes hooker his own, and Matt Wright comes along like Jarrod Croker did for Canberra. If that happens the rest will fall into place (barring injuries obviously).
