We are under no obligation to pay him what he would have been on this season, pro-rata or not. It'd be a fresh negotiation. We just have first rights, which probably means nothing.

I think it would be pro rata otherwise it would be too easy for him to get to Nth Qld.

It was a release, with an agreement he cant play for any other team in 2019. If we have no cap, he sits out the season.

We have a seat at the table for 2020 and beyond, but that is not worth the paper it was printed on.

Yeah that's the way I read it too. He can only play for us, but that doesn't mean we have to pay him the money he would have been on. But it's a moot point because I think we'd only play him as part of extending beyond next year.

Interesting. I can't remember reading that second bit anywhere.

Well if he can only play for us, and we don't sign him, then he can't play anywhere.
Whether we must offer him 2019 value or can offer whatever we want who knows

Odds on if we can't offer him a deal he wants then we probably 'do the right thing' and let him sign with someone else anyway...

Not that I expect him to reappear in 2019.

well if he cant sign to play for us with no cap, and he legally cant play for anyone else bar us, where does common sense have him seated?

He won't become available during the 2019 season, so it doesn't matter really.

My response was to someone wanting Gutho & Ma'u, then you brought in Brown and Flanno likened it to not wanting Turbo bros.

Not at all. Just thought it’s strange to rule out signing players because of where their team finished.

I think Gutho and Ma'u are pretty average. I probably should've said that instead of talking about where their club finished.

Fair enough mate 👍 I do think we could do better but for the right price they aren’t bad options in my mind. Certainly Gutho could add something to our team, I am a little worried where all our tries are going to come from without Holmes. His ability to play several positions also gives us some flexibility in the market.

Then we would just be nice and let him sign somewhere else

Yep

Both these guys have had some good games in the past, but have also been 'pretty average' or below average plenty too

If we don’t have the money to sign him we should still insist that he sits out the year.

We did him a massive favour so he could pursue his dream.
