Has apparently signed with the New York Jets for one year. Forget for a minute the circumstances around his departure and realise that this is actually a massive achievement. Good on him I say.

Basically has a chance to end up on the practice squad and compete for a roster spot.

Let's not get carried away.

There's no doubt a fair percentage of Val getting this contract is publicity. Hayne was at one stage the 3rd highest selling NFL jersey.

But if they don't follow through with the next steps it will just be a massive waste of time. A big part of me still believes this is something Val wants to succeed at

Doesn't look like he has taken to the field yet in their first pre-season game.
In 3rd quarter and he has no rushes, receiving or kick/punt returns yet and they are using a lot of depth players. Not good signs for him so far...

2 carries for 1 yard gain now so at least he's been on

Union winger Christian Wade ran in a big touchdown for Bills though

Wow that’s bad news.

Picked up a little more play late by the looks.
His team were a couple scores down so probably playing against very few if any opponents who have played NFL.

But had another rush for 5 yards (3 for 6 yards total), and three receptions (from 3 targets) for total of 30 yards so stats finished up a bit nicer.

I haven't actually seen anything just stats but assume he's still a huge long shot for a roster spot. He's likely 5th or 6th choice running back and also likely outside top 10 wide receivers.

Not that he 100% hasn't made the cut yet, but I don't expect him to and never expected he could unless he threw a few years into it. Let's see if he cuts and runs back to the NRL or sticks with it.

Edit: Some quotes from Jets fans
"Holmes looks lost in pass protection, not really surprising"
"Yeah he let a blitzing linebacker through before and 2 plays ago he kind just stood there and gave a half assed "block" before going on a route."

"Holmes has some speed and hands. He might make a better slot receiver"
"Don't know if you can say he had hands when he's catching balls in the flat."
"Well, if he keeps running between the tackles I fear for his life lol"

"Damn Holmes, this ain’t rugby bro."

"Nice run by Holmes!"

"I get that Holmes is raw, but he's looked better than any back tonight."

"Holmes runs very smoothly"
"Needs to lower his shoulders when tackled - the first catch he did the high step NRL players do when taking a hit up, and also probably should chip the blitzing LB before he gets a QB killed."

Edit 2: His work as a receiver (ignoring that everyone above hated his blocking) actually looks okay

Should add also, I was super disappointed in Val letting himself get cleaned up front on like he did, thought he'd be able to make contact a bit better than that going into a one-on-one tackle against a 6ft 90kg guy

Last chance! Holmes impresses

The New York Jets have signed Valentine Holmes to their practice squad.

The move was expected after the Jets waived the former NRL star on Saturday.

Holmes will train with the Jets during the coming season, but likely will not play games.

The Jets’ regular season begins against the Buffalo Bills on September 8. Holmes will take a significant pay cut from what he was earning as an elite NRL player.

Holmes will pocket about $202,000 on the practice squad.

It is a long way from the five-year $5 million contract the Cronulla Sharks offered Holmes before he left for New York and what other NRL teams would be willing to pay if he returned to Australia.

Holmes was joined by offensive linemen Calvin Anderson and Ben Braden, cornerback Kyron Brown, quarterback Luke Falk, linebacker Jamey Mosley and wide receiver Jeff Smith on the Jets’ practice squad.

The Jets are stacked with experienced running back talent led by Le’Veon Bell, who signed a four-year $77million contract to join the team.

Holmes is taking part in the NFL’s International Pathway program designed to give non-US elite athletes a chance to embed with NFL teams and learn the game without the pressure of having to make the 53-man roster or play games.

While regular NFL practice squad players can be activated during the regular season and play games, Holmes and other Pathway players who fill a bonus 11th practice squad slot cannot be activated. They only train with their teams.

Rival NFL teams are also barred from signing Holmes.

The practice squad does allow Holmes the luxury of training with the Jets for the full season, building relationships with coaches and players and learning the complexities of the game without the fear of being axed to free up a roster position.

Source : Telegraph

A top-secret dinner meeting in New York on Tuesday night could determine whether former Cronulla and Australian star Val Holmes quits the NFL for a dramatic return to rugby league from the start of next season.

The Daily Telegraph can exclusively reveal North Queensland coach Paul Green is in the Big Apple for a private dinner with Holmes to discuss luring the former NRL champion back home.

Holmes, 24, has agreed to play with the Cowboys once his NFL dream has finished. Green desperately hopes that will be next season.

Green has been in Boston for a week-long professional development course at Harvard University, which is funded by the Cowboys.

This is the third and final year he will do the course, which costs around $20,000.

Green left Boston on Monday for the short journey south to New York, where he will meet Holmes.

While the meeting has been kept private, Holmes’ manager Chris Orr is aware of it.

North Queensland have kept cash in their salary cap for the possible arrival of Holmes.

However, the former Queensland Origin player is still believed to want to pursue his NFL career and spurn North Queensland’s interest.

It is understood Green and Holmes will talk in-depth about his chances of reigniting his rugby league career in Townsville.

Holmes’ wife Natalia recently wrote on social media that she was looking forward to heading back home next week, but she posted again on Monday — with an accompanying photo of her and Holmes and New York in the background — “New York City, you feel like home!”

While Val and Natalia live together in neighbouring New Jersey, friends claim they are homesick.

One well-placed source said: “The Cowboys will be trying to get Val home. It’s not all glamorous over there on the practice squad. He is having some down times.

“North Queensland have room in their cap, they have money there. But Val is a pretty determined bloke. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.”

Holmes knows he can earn close to $1 million a season in rugby league, a massive amount compared to his modest $181,500 annual Jets practice squad contract.

The Sharks’ 2016 grand final-winning winger continues to train with the New York Jets practice squad but is ineligible to be elevated into the NFL franchise’s top squad this season.

It means Holmes would have to train for another 10 months before knowing whether he has made the Jets’ top-flight 53-man roster for the 2020-21 season.

North Queensland have plans to shift Scott Drinkwater into five-eighth should Holmes return to play fullback. The Cowboys had real issues at five-eighth last season.

Green has been in the US for two weeks and will fly to Townsville on Wednesday.

He will start next season under some pressure given his club’s failure to reach the finals in the past two years and only finishing a modest eighth in 2017.

North Queensland have a host of emerging rookies but need a player of Holmes’ ability to take the club to a new level of excellence.

Holmes still has family and friends in north Queensland.

Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold completed a similar four-day professional development course at Harvard in 2017.

I think the only reason he doesn't mention the Sharks is because he was so sad to leave, and the thought makes him upset.

Val having a pretty good game.

the player he would be if he took up our deal...

I know he’s got a lot of haters on here.
I’ve got a real soft spot for him.
