Is anyone else over them?
I think I am. They are boring the socks off me how long it takes for a kicker to line it up and slot it over. After a try is scored there is enough time to go make a cup of tea and come back to watch it. I want to see more actual footy!
I relise they are a traditional part of the game and all but I think they could use a tweak considering how the game is evoloving (rubber kicking tees/improved goal kicking skills, reliance on bombs, need to give fans value for money on game day ect)
It probabaly wouldn't be so frustrating if valuable game time wasn't ticking down in the process but despite fans complaining the NRL hasn't changed this policy. Mabye it is to do with schedules or player fatigue I don't know but it means we only really see 70 mins of game time.
Anyways back to the brunt of it, they are just not a highlight in our game. I mean the crowd might get excited if it's a close game or it's a tough side line conversion but other than that I feel a tad sense of apathy about it. I know the 2points could be the difference but tries is what this game is about right? In some games they feel more like a formality and the time wasting is a killer to a team trying to crawl its way back.
Guess that's the reward for the team getting tries in the middle under the sticks and giving their goal kicker a much better chance. But I think teams just attempt to find the try line whever they can and don't actively or intentionally aim to put someone over in the middle. If they do well it's a nice bonus as your gauranteed another 2 points essentially.
Goal kickers have gotten so good these days I think they have pretty decent conversion rates from out wide anyway.
I'm so excited after the team scores a try the conversion is almost like an after thought. On the other hand after opposition scores that next few minutes is agonising waiting to get back into the game and try and get momentum back.
How many times have we seen a team lose despite scoring more tries.
So despite a "teams" superior performance the result gets determined by one players boot vs the others. Sorta like the scrappy field goal shoot outs we get in extra time although there's a bit more to those.
So with the above as a bit of a pretext some ideas or options with the aim of increasing actual game time and making conversions more relevant (in my mind anyway).
1. If nothing else, please STOP the clock when player is lining up the conversion.
2. Or decrease the available time the kicker has to take the conversion. They fluff about with their tee and wind direction ect but when the game is on the line and time is running out boy they seem to be able to kick it pretty quick so they are capable of doing this. Would also add more value to the try under the sticks as goal kicker has less time to prep so easy shot is much bigger advantage.
3. Alot of people complain about the predictible 5th tackle bomb which is a 50/50 lottery more akin to AFL which leads to alot of tries. Some argue such tries should be worth less. Why not remove a conversion attempt all together if a try has come off a bomb so max they can score is 4.
That will bring more value to a through the hands try.
4. Keep conversions but no more kicking off a tee. Use drop kicks just like in Union. They are over and done with quick and arguarly require more skill to carry out on target. Getting a try under the sticks again will be worth more pursuing as the conversion attempts out wide are so much tougher.
