Burns into Origin equation

TRAVIS Burns's scintillating start to the NRL season has caught the attention of Queensland selectors, who have earmarked the Manly five-eighth as a potential State of Origin representative.

Burns, 22, has made an immediate impact for the Sea Eagles this season, forming a formidable halves combination with new recruit Matt Orford.

The two were instrumental in orchestrating Manly's comeback 30-22 win against Sydney Roosters last night, with Burns crossing seven minutes from full-time to secure the victory for the home side.

Brisbane's Darren Lockyer and North Queensland's Johnathan Thurston are likely to fight it out for the Queensland No.6 jersey, as both have been in tremendous early season form.

But despite playing only five first grade games, Burns has made an impression on Maroons selectors.

"I thought his performances of the past couple of weeks have been interesting," Queensland selector Alan Smith said.

"Running in towards selection time, who knows what happens."

Smith was actually at the Sharks-South Sydney match last night, but drove to Brookvale Oval to pick up fellow Maroons selectors Gene Miles and Des Morris and caught most of the later game.

While the trio was looking primarily at the form of the likes of Steve Bell, Chris Flannery and Ashley Harrison, they were also keen to see more of Burns.

"I thought his competitiveness over the past couple of weeks has been excellent. Long term, who knows," Smith said.

"Unfortunately these days we don't have the volume of players that New South Wales does, so it's always good to have a look at Queenslanders playing at the elite level in the NRL and keep an eye on them.

"Who knows, he is probably not in contention at this stage, but probably long term."

TRAVIS Burns scored two tries in one trial game for his new club Penrith and has been selected as five-eighth for the first game of the season.

TRAVIS Burns scored two tries in one trial game for his new club Penrith and has been selected in his favourite position of five-eighth for the first game of the season against Canberra Raiders on Saturday night at CUA Stadium.

Burns first played NRL football for Manly Sea Eagles and then added to his tally of NRL games by playing with the North Queensland Cowboys for two seasons.

He has joined Penrith this season and scored two tries and kicked his only attempt at goal in a 32-12 victory against Parramatta last month.

Burns also scored a try in his second trial game for Penrith.

He will be in good company on Saturday night. New South Wales centre Michael Jennings is also in the backline and Petero Civoniceva will start at prop.

After playing his first rugby league in his hometown Texas, Burns moved with his family to Allora and linked with the Wattles club.

He played under-18 footy for Wattles and then joined with Cronulla Sharks to play Jersey Flegg footy. Burns played in a Jersey Flegg grand final in a curtain raiser to one NRL grand final.

Last night, Burns’ sister Chantal Keogh said he was really happy with the move to Penrith.

“Travis loves the club and the coaching staff,” Chantal said.

“We are very proud of him; our family will travel to some games later in the season.

“Before he signed with Penrith, there was talk of him going overseas but he wanted to play 100 games in the NRL.

“Travis would love to be considered for State of Origin; that is the dream of all footballers.”

Burns won’t be without friendly faces in the crowd on Saturday at Penrith, his cousin Lee Schwenke from Texas and a mate from Townsville will be at the game against Canberra.

In other NRL news, Kevin Gordon and David Mead are on the wings for the Gold Coast Titans for their first game of the season.

Former Stanthorpe junior Jordan Atkins was on the wing in trials.

Burns to return within weeks

PENRITH star Travis Burns looks set to make an earlier than expected return from a knee injury.

Burns had injured his knee in last week’s loss to his former side North Queensland and initial fears were that he may miss a big chunk of the season.

But on closer inspection, Burns suffered no major damage and should return soon for the Panthers.

“I’ve torn my meniscus cartilage. I got an arthroscope on Wednesday and it is not as bad as first thought so maybe only a couple of weeks out,” Burns told Bigpond Sports Weekend on Sunday.

Burns signed with the Panthers last November on a two-year deal.

The five-eighth has been a footballing nomad in his career, having played with Cronulla, Manly and North Queensland before joining the Panthers.

He put the Panthers’ patchy early form down to bad luck and said they would rebound strongly in the coming weeks.

“We were unlucky. We started the season well and our trial form was probably the best out of the NRL. We started well against Canberra and got a good win,” Burns said.

“We let a big lead slip against the Cowboys. That’s footy, we had a couple of quarters go against us. We’ve got to regroup and start again next week against Newcastle.
