Yeah. Pretty evident that they are teed up by the broadcasters to talk up those things.
The other thing is star players. They can throw an absolute dogshit pass and the commentators will blame the receiver for getting his run wrong.
I'm having a guess, but assume the commentators would have a screen showing those main stats live (run metres, tackles etc).
Thats probably all they have to go on.
I mean, ideally they are also watching the game...
