This is a thread about the wooden spoon. First of all likelihood:
The only other team with a mathematical possibility of getting the spoon is the Raiders. They are on -185. We are on -262. The difference is 77 points. They also are on one more win than us.

Round 25:
Raiders play the Tigers in Canberra 5:30pm Saturday. They are favourites.
Sharks play the Cowboys in Townsville on Monday night. They are $11 outsiders.

Obviously it would take a miracle for the Sharks to win this one and the Raiders are probably going to beat the Tigers. All the Sharks can hope for is to minimise the damage the Cowboys do, and hope the Raiders get flogged somehow.

Round 26:
Sharks play the Tigers 3pm Saturday at Leicchardt.
Raiders play the Eels in Canberra 5:30pm Saturday.
Sharks have a chance against the Tigers. Raiders should get beaten by the Eels.

Basically the points differential is almost impossible to make up in those two rounds. The only real shot is for the Raiders to lose both games and the Sharks to win both. I'd give that a 150:1 chance.

I put the blame for this on Flanagan and his board to be honest. Not having a caretaker coach that wanted to be there is the reason we are getting the spoon imo. There were too many games earlier on that we should have won but didn't due to lack of coaching / preparation.

i still cant believe that we will get the spoon

you think about the miracle in 2009 where we avoided it, there has always been a way to dodge it

but now we will get it

This was the year it all caught up with us. Call it karma, call it overdue, call it what you want. For some strange reason I'm not upset that we're going to get it. Every year someone has to. For perverse, schadenfreude reasons I wanted the Raiders to get it, just to see what happened to Sticky.

Some big teams won the spoon in recent years, Roosters, Storm*, Bulldogs...Hell, the Rabbitohs were a laughing stock in the 2000's, and the Eels won two in a row. Our last was in 1969, so with only two/three spoons to our name we're still better off than many many other teams in the comp, historically speaking. Everyone bounces back.

I'm more disappointed in our coach, and how we never change our brand of football.

Ahh 2009. I still remember the Rabbitohs diving over for a try with literally one second to go and winning the game. Gut wrenching moment. Then the Roosters being so up at half time in their game. Then the relief as the Cowboys got back into the game and then got the win.

That season was tough but it made me a better Sharks fan. I was fully engaged as a fan because of that season.

This season is the opposite. It's making me less engaged as a fan. We won't have an Irvine to save us this time, and if we did you'd have to wonder if it's even worth it.

The spoon can be a good thing for a successful club, makes them take stock have a real good look at things and make hard but the right decisions over the whole club.... Unfortunately with clubs with no track record of real success when they do these audits so to speak they look for excuseses and with Asada and injuries and not our regular coach they have them.. I really think Even with all our players back next season unless we can find 10 points extra a game in attack we will bash around the bottom 8 not the top 8.. .. That said I will pay my membership and believe that we will be 2015 premiers...
Most of us will remember our parents (mainly mum) giving us a crack across the ass with the wooden spoon, use to refocus me let's hope it happens to the sharks.

Yep, the excuses will be rolled out and the Club will probably just expect us to be a top 8 team again next year just because Flanno is back and hopefully don't have a similar year with injuries. They're living in la la land if that's what they think.

As our list stands right now, with no further signings, we are bottom 4 next year. I have no doubt about that.

That's the thing vic, I don't think the Sharks will learn anything from it. The reality is our spine needs a shake up. I think our outside backs are bordering on decent now with Holmes / Gagen / Leutele / Feki / Gordon all fit. Ennis is a good hooker. I think Brown should play off the bench and be depth and we basically need two new halves. Also need to stock some better forward depth, particularly props.

First World problem.. Lighten up fellas. There are bigger problems i the world. Someone has to get the spoon every year. First time in my lifetime that we will get it. Life goes on.

All football problems can probably be classed as first world problems. What's the point in being in a forum like this if that's your logic?

17 players out due to suspension, termination or injury (Probably 20 after this last weekend). Regardless of the ASADA problems only 2 of the players suspended would be playing (Gal & Toops)
You cant expect to field a competitive side with those odds stacked against you. This is the first time I have seen us get the spoon and I hope its the last. One team gets it every year and I dont
think any of them have had a season as problematic as we just have.

Like vicsharkfan said, my mother used to wield a wooden spoon, never liked them very much after that.

Does the NRL actually strike the players with the wooden spoon? And if so, can you put cardboard down the back of your pants or is it strictly strides down?

The review into why this has Hellenes needs to focus on what we can change next year. ASADA and losing our coach is over now and we can't change.

Why we're losing a couple of players every game to injury should be thoroughly addressed. And no it's not bad luck. The trainers and physio departments need to respond to this and IMO be overhauled if necessary.

It's not "just one of those things". Not at the scale it's occurring.

Be interesting to see what each players injury is and see if it is bad luck or bad management.

I wish I had money and know-how to buy this ****ing club and fix it. It makes me sick to my stomach that the club I love will get the wooden spoon. Can't stand it, it ****ing hurts to much.
