“In Josh’s contract there’s a weight clause, before Christmas he had met all his targets, he adhered to them, he was looking really good and they thought the penny had dropped here.

“Post Christmas, he’s had sickness, a calf injury, a broken hand and now it’s a bit murky because of those injuries, does it mitigate where those clauses are at?”

Schuster’s pre-season was hampered by a bout of chickenpox and a finger injury, falling down the pecking order behind Ben Trbojevic and Haumole Olakau’atu.
It does show some of the things we don't hear about when a player is struggling for fitness or performance.

Seems there a clause in his contract where Manly don’t have to pay anything out to him. Wow
or the RLPA
Never mind those two, can’t believe the agent agreed to it
I would expect that a performance clause to be in every NRL contract.

Just don’t think of “performance” as how good they are on game day. Think of performance as doing their training, gym, fitness, rehab, diet, off field behaviour, attending meetings, sponsor and community events etc. as dictated by the club.

A player being paid their money is 100% contingent on them doing these things.

In the case of Schuster, if Manly are trying to invoke this clause they would likely need to show how and when he hasn’t met his performance targets, and it would be up to the RLPA and/or his agent to object to that.

It was implicit in the story that he missed several objective measures, particularly weight.

Tough to argue against that for the lad.

Yeah agreed.

My comments were moreso that performance clause is standard for all players. It's not as if Manly inserted a special fatso clause for Schuster.

Scott Fulton was in talks to join Dragons at start of the week. Was chasing Schuster hard at Tigers so would expect he'd try and get him there too.

Whilst I don't see Flanno and Schuster as a good player/coach match we all know what Flanno can bring out of that style backrower.

Schuster doesn't have what it takes upstairs to make it in the NRL. I wouldn't go near him.

Got his big contract and now started coasting. One of the dangers of paying ridiculously stupid money on ‘potential’ to young kids who aren’t ready for it.
Also to young kids who have had it easy in the juniors, he's never had to work hard until now, that just doesn't work if you want to play with the big boys.

But that money is splashed because when you get it right and get your hands on the star it can drastically increase your success.

Trick isn't don't spend big on unproven players*, trick is to get it right.

*unless you're a Brisbane, Storm, now Penrith, who can get away attracting a lot of the talent they want without overspending.

I agree I just know Fulton is in love with him
Perhaps Not the only Fulton;) either. Feel a touch sorry for Schuster( the Rooster) , his internal promoters base was eroded by the Fulton purge. On borrowed time ( if not performing) from thereon imho. Explains the non performance clauses( if true) in the latest deal.
