I know that we'd like him to kick more, and a handful of posters don't like the guy - but Moylan can't have done too much wrong in the eyes of the forum in 2022. At one point he won 4 MoMs in a row in the 3-2-1 didn't he?

The main issue we've had with Moylan from 2019-21 is that he gets injured too much, and that he plays like **** in his first game or two back from injury. Neither of those things happened in 2022. I for one would take 2022 Moylan over any version of Shaun Johnson who turned out in a Sharks jersey.
Trindall would have got 5

I think Kennedy will remain first choice fullback and will be re-signed. Since Dykes would be stuck behind him, hopefully Jets can help us by using Dykes at 6 for the full season, get him ready as a Moylan replacement. Keep Trindall at 7 for a full season at jets also, only bring him up if Hynes is out. Allow both players to mature and hone their craft in one position. That'll set us up for good depth in the halves for 2024, and the future if they end up staying.

I think the new guy from Panthers might suggest Dykes is looked at as a 1.

Probably Jets something like

1 Dykes
6 Miller
7 Trindall

14 Puru

18 Davies

With Puru/Davies in the starting side most weeks due to Dykes/Miller/Trindall rotating through NRL 18th man

Easy enough to swap Dykes and Miller though if Sharks do like Dykes for 6. Might just mean Miller doesn't get as many NRL 18th man jerseys (but becomes fullback #2?) And Davies/Puru rotate in for Trindall/Dykes.

Not sure if Davies is back anyway. Most players just sign for 1 year at a time in NSW Cup. He's a good benchie though, since he can play 9 just as well as 7.

It will be interesting to see how the Jets approach the lineup now that they have a guy who has progressed though the Sharks and taken the job. Do they still pick the lineup that they think best helps them win, or do they put Sharks guys in key spots to maximise development? Matterson would pick Matt Evans and give Lumelume 10 minutes off the bench back in the day. That was the right decision in terms of getting wins, but maybe Lumelume ends up a better player if he was given a bit more rope when he was 19.

Prioritising development over wins is how the Qld teams and Storm do it. I've watched Fifita, Cobbo, Drinkwater and others all turn in shockers in the Q Cup.

Two sides to the argument though. Nobody can blame Matterson for trying to win.

He might not but got pretty good involvement last season and other change is Metcalf out and (presumably somewhat) Puru in so he'd be likely to see good amount of football again.

Matterson apparently still copped swapping Miller to 5/8 to get some defence practice so he was at least somewhat willing to play along.

If our 17 stay healthy, probably be Tracey that'll be that 18th man every week

That's true, didn't really consider him. Originally there were rules about 18th man I think you couldn't use the same player back to back or something?

thing is, 2 years locks us in to moylan with no get out

we could have given him a 1 year deal, no one else wanted him

now, if rivett, dykes, the penrith kid all kill it we have more dead cap, we also have to look to move him on if we had a shot at someone like moses
My gut feeling is that Dykes needs to be playing NRL.

If his best position is 1 or 6 - some of you guys would be more able to answer this ..

He'll start the season there but he's by no means safe imo.

And we have Trindall/Hynes pairing - no thanks.

I'd rather the extra year if it meant keeping Moylan and giving us time to recruit/replace him - whether it's that Penrith kid, Dykes, Rivett who knows. Gives us time to plan.
I’m ok with trying Trindall for a year, we lose nothing .. If it works then it’s genius and we keep him, if it doesn’t we don’t lose because we have more $ to play with for next year

I think currently his best position is 1, but he certainly has the potential to be clone a decent 6.

Primarily he is a ball runner. He can pass, but the strength of his passing game is executing 3 on 2’s rather than digging in to the line, using options etc.

He’s 20 though. Teddy, Latrell and Slater couldn’t throw a pass between them at that age. Plenty of time.
