Well I thought I would start the thread for 2013 haven't seen one as yet.

I haven't watched every game but what are peoples thoughts on it so far honestly I think its the best start to the season so far and I am quite enjoying it.
Yes we could talk about that obstruction during the warriors thread and whilst i would love it to have been a try under the rules it wasn't and I was happy with that.

The tap needs to be looked at that seems to have become a grey area now the are pushing up the pace of the game.

The other thing I now have a problem is that teams like Souths like the Storm are really pushing the wrestle, three in the tackle tuning the players on their backs the refs really need to call held earlier if they want to bring the tempo of the game up.

last thing Interpretation is dangerous we have seen that over the last couple of years we are human and we all would Interpret the rules differently I have seen that on this very forum I am happy for them to go by the book.

Anyway I will just leave it at that to start with

I have been impressed so far. Like that the refs are making a call before referring to the video

Refs have been improved their consistency on calls and I like the obstruction call. The coaches may not like the new "interpretation" of the obstruction rule but at the end of day they know where they stand, make contact and no try even if it is on the other side of the field.

Much better than previous years which isn't surprising given Bill 'me me me me' Harrigan isn't in charge anymore.

I think they've been going well too.

I do think its still too quick. Quality tackles aren't being rewarded- Luke Lewis has been pinged for being slow in the ruck once or twice after he's nearly cut the ball carrier in half.

And more generally, I think a kick for touch is too big a reward for the petty stuff that happens in the ruck. A restart to the count would be enough IMO.

Yeah the play the ball is too quick. But i think the refs have actually made better split second decisions that have been proven correct on replay.
I agree about the restart of the tackle count. best idea i have heard in a while.

Refs have been improved their consistency on calls and I like the obstruction call. The coaches may not like the new "interpretation" of the obstruction rule but at the end of day they know where they stand, make contact and no try even if it is on the other side of the field.

the reason they are consistent is that they pull up everything. Players are being 'obstructed 10-15 meters from the ball, on the try line and no try is given. While at least no contact is allowed it removes the grey area, changing that rule so much, is completely changing the game. The second man option close to the line is going to be exteinct from team tactics soon as that first man through is getting pulled up so much, going to make spreading it wide a mission. However, more cut out passes! maybe.

The quick tap needs to be looked at. Benjis was no different to Todds, only todd was pulled back. Because the ref is too lazy to find his position why should the attacking team suffer (and the defensive/penalised team advantaged).
Quick tap should be called by the team, ie like they call a kick for goal, kick to touch or just a regular tap. The player must place the ball on the ground and tap it I reckon, to avoid those pathetic attempts like Benjis though. Thats slows it down enough, but ensures its done right

The quick tap is a joke, when Todd went to take it both refs were in position so there was no reason for it not to be allowed to be taken.

There are still some issues but thats more to do with the existing rules but the refs this yr thus far are tonnes better than last yr, well done Daniel Anderson & refs.

My only gripe with the refs this year is the interpretation of the shoulder charge
Seems they will only penalise if the tackle is pulled off

I thought the rule that gives the non-offending team another 6 tackles instead of a kick for touch was to be implemented this season. I recall them trailing it in the All-Stars game in Feb.
The players did look pretty confused with it all though so maybe that was part of the reason they never actually incorporated it. It could lead to an increase in defender infringements on zero or fist tackles as not much penalty to them if they are caught that early in the tackle count so would need some thinking.

The refs have been alot better this year and has been noticeable from the first round. The ref making his judgement before going upstairs for them to confirm, removing BOD has not only improved the flow of the game but it looks to have increased the confidence levels of the whistle blowers and given power and autonomy back to them. I'm not so upset if the odd call is wrong cause at least they made a decision. The multiple replays of past still resulted in the wrong decision so I don't miss it!

My only major gripe and it's not just season 2013 is forward passes and how touchies still can't get these right!! Every round I see flat balls called forward and obviously forwarded passes missed on the other hand.
Are the touchies not fit and fast enough to be in-line with the play the ball or are they too scared to make a call when they are not 100% sure as they don't have the benefit of a video review?

They grey area around how the ball "leaves the hands" is too complicated and subjective. Tidy this up and we might see some better calls but it irkes we no end, we should be getting this simple part of the game right.

While on a few later looks the ball that went into touch (for the 40-20) in B Ryans corner last sunday was in fact in the field of play. The touchie was 30 odd meters away to make the call. I just think that aint right.

i agree with that gards,,, for mine the touchies should be playing a role similar to soccer linesmen. they are the ones best positioned in line with the defensive or attacking line to make calls on foward passes and offsides from kicks and kickoffs.

it does seem as though they're not confident enough to make calls on this.

overall though, i must say refereeing has improved this year. definately less yelling at the tv so far.

This is what used to happen years ago & it was so simple.

On a humerous note, the touchies of yesteryear & today still have that uncanny individual dorky sprint down the sideline, even more noticeable when they are doing the sprint back from a conversion attempt.

From what I have seen this year I think the refs are doing a good job,
they seem to be making their own calls a bit more rather than using the video ref.

well done
