Most are familiar with the famous 'criteria' for the granting of NRL licences post-Super League - criteria which led to the St George Illawarra and Wests Tigers joint ventures, and the omission of Souths from the competition.

But back in 1986, four clubs - Cronulla, Easts, Illawarra and Wests - were battling to meet similar criteria, for fear of being left out of the 1987 competition.

The Sharks were struggling after the Ronson sponsorship fell through.

In the end, nothing eventuated, though it prompted Wests to move from Lidcombe to Campbelltown in 1987. Cronulla Leagues Club also had to kick in $150,000 to the football club.
