As far as I'm aware, Tawera is the only Sharks player in 42 years to have won a Premiership, represented his Country, and have a grandstand named after him.

Awesome work.

What a beauty he was, didn't he run a fish and chip shop and left us cause of a pay dispute?

Funny story- my mate(new to NRL) sponsors the Storm, and attended the premiership reunion including current players, 2 years ago.I described Nikau to him and suggested, he specifically chat to him.(Think this was after his bike accident). My mate went up to a big(ger) islander on crutches and started talking to him about the sharks etc- the guy looked quizzically at him after several minutes and said "i never played for the sharks"- It was Kafusi on crutches! Classic- Nikau wasn't even there!

His first wife Letitia ran a Pizza Shop in Cronulla and "T" would be regularly down there helping out and mixing with the customers.

Top bloke and very personable and endearing.

I'd thoroughly recommend the book "Standing Tall - The Tawera Nickau Story". It is not so much about his time with the Sharks but his life before, during and after football and an inspirational story of triumph over adversity and the strength of the human spirit and courage.
