Hope you get better Steph and are able to complete in the first comp next year and win your 5th World title.

Stalker fears of bashed surfer Stephanie Gilmour
Zoe Hancock, Amanda Lulham and Greg Stolz From: The Daily Telegraph December 29, 2010 12:00AM

A HOMELESS man accused of attacking four-time world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore with an iron bar and a lump of wood may have been stalking her, Gilmore's friends say.

The dramatic details of the heroics of Gilmore's relatives and neighbours emerged yesterday after the ambush.

Gilmore was attacked as she walked through the stairwell of her Tweed Heads unit block to an undercover garage about 9.30pm on Monday.

Struck once to the head with an iron bar, she screamed and put an arm up to defend herself from a second blow, which fractured her wrist.

Her aunt Anita, who was near the unit block, raced to her aid, as did a group of five neighbours who chased the alleged attacker - a 26-year-old man - and held him until police arrived.

About 100 people filled the small street in minutes as the news spread that the popular Gilmore - known as "Happy" Gilmore due to her bubbly personality - had been hurt.

Neighbour Dane Pioli said he heard Gilmore scream. He saw a man take off on a bicycle and he and others gave chase, eventually finding him in bushes.

"We shone a spotlight on him and took a photo and took it back to Steph," he said.

Brenton Fish, was also among those to help: "We saw a guy hiding in the bushes out the front of our place and ran down and bailed him up."

Fellow neighbour Rodney Jack said the man was "known" to building residents.

Friends of the surfing champion said the man who had been arrested had been "hanging around" the area.

"This freaky guy has apparently been hanging around the area, being a serial pest," said one, who did not want to be named.

Gilmore, who has concussion, stitches and a cast on her wrist, hoped for a full recovery.

"Thank you to my family and friends and everyone who supported me. I am happy everyone is OK," she said.

Gilmore said the incident would not stop her training in preparation for the Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks in February.

"I'll have to work on other things but it won't hurt my confidence," she said.

Gilmore's father Jeff revealed it had been a bittersweet day for Gilmore. She also became an aunt for the first time after elder sister Bonnie had a baby girl.

Mr Gilmore said his daughter was shaken and it would take time for her to recover.

"She's strong but she's pretty shaken," he said.

"She's just become an aunty this afternoon so that has lifted her spirits."

No wonder she is "Happy Gilmour"
with a massive deal with quiksilver.

$ilver lining for Gilmore
Amanda Lulham From: The Daily Telegraph
January 07, 2011 12:00AM

THE nearest break is her boardroom and for her moves on the waves Australian Stephanie Gilmore is the highest paid female surfer in the world - and now a stablemate of 10-time surfing legend Kelly Slater.

Four-time world champion Gilmore yesterday announced she had moved from Rip Curl to Quiksilver in a new sponsorship deal rumoured to be worth more than $5 million over the next five years.

While industry sources believe Gilmore's sponsorship is worth more than one to three men ranked in the top 10 on the men's World Tour rankings, Gilmore said wanting to "keep things fresh" was the main reason behind her move.

Gilmore's career earnings, according to the ASP website, are $419,050 with the surfer last year earning $94,200 as she secured her fourth successive world crown.

Speculation is rife the Quiksilver deal also includes big-money incentives for winning major events. But the 22-year-old, who declined to disclose the financial details of the new deal, said moving to Quiksilver was "not a monetary thing".

"I had an absolutely fantastic 10-year relationship with Rip Curl and I can only speak so highly of them," said Gilmore, whose passions away from surfing include music and photography.

"I enjoyed every moment I had on the team and they helped me achieve winning four world titles.

"This is just a personal thing where I kind of wanted to sort of rejuvenate my career halfway through and it was a personal choice.

"I really wanted something to get me excited.

"Globally they are such a giant brand with so much opportunity everywhere in the industry with music, fashion, surfing, skating ... the whole lot. Everything I'm learning about the company is it's more about the lifestyle, music, art, philanthropy and being creative, being independent, being young and successful and having fun."

The deal is a bit of welcome good news for Gilmore, who just a fortnight ago had her wrist broken when she was attacked outside her home. Gilmore will join 13 female artists, musicians, photographers, writers philanthropists and fashion designers as a brand ambassador.

In Australia only dual world champion Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Taj Burrow, Ace Buchan and rising stars Owen Wright and Julian Wilson are believed to be on bigger contracts than Gilmore, a star of the women's surfing tour and an articulate spokesperson off it.

Cronulla rides the high waves to Surftag national final

Cronulla rides the high waves to Surftag national final
BY BRAD FORREST
02 Feb, 2011 04:00 AM

CRONULLA Boardriders Club scrapped hard to overcome a poor start on their home turf to earn a place in the national final of the $100,000 Jim Beam Surftag event at Avalon Beach this weekend.

By moving through the 28-club heats to the state regional final on Sunday, Cronulla follows neighbours Elouera, who won the state final last year to advance to the nationals.

"We rose to the occasion when it mattered in the good waves, even though the final was very messy," said veteran deaf surfer, Andy King. "In a good team performance I thought Dylan Hayllar was a real stand-out for us all weekend."

The $100,000 national competition is run under the popular Surftag format, with each club represented by five surfers. In relay style, each surfer catches three waves and then returns to the beach to tag their team's next surfer (bonus points for each team's fifth surfer returning early to the tag area), with the top two teams from each heat progressing to the next round and every surfer's second (power) wave worth double points.

The Elouera and Garie clubs were knocked out early. Cronulla, who tried but failed to get the likes of Kirk Flintoff and Keelan Veitch registered in a second team for the weekend, appeared to be facing an early exit, too. But they managed to sneak into the semi finals, which they won, to advance to the four-team state regional final and automatically qualify for the Australian titles.

In small, messy waves for Sunday afternoon's final at Wanda Beach, Queenscliff managed to edge out Ulladulla, North Steyne and local favourites Cronulla.

The NSW regional was the final stop before the national final where semi-finalists take on the other clubs that have qualified. Queenscliff, Ulladulla, North Steyne, Cronulla, Ulladulla B, Long Reef, Bronte and reigning national champions North Narrabeen have progressed. They now face the who's who of Australian club surfing in the national final, including Queensland giants, Kirra and Snapper Rocks.

Cronulla's team for the nationals is Matt Griggs, Dylan Hannah, Dylan Hayllar, Dane Durbin and Andrew King.

Hawaiian Carissa Moore wins the womens Roxy Pro Goldy.
AAP
08-Mar-2011

Hawaii's Carissa Moore has won the opening event of the surfing world tour on the Gold Coast, defeating Aussie rookie Tyler Wright in a hard-fought final.

Moore grabbed the lead in the opening minutes of the Roxy Pro final with a near-perfect score of 9.17, then used her priority to steal a wave from Wright.

A second wave score of 6.17 and a 15.34 total was enough to win the final against Wright, whose best scores of 7.20 and 7.17 were not quite enough to catch the Hawaiian.

For the 16-year-old Wright the result was a stunning start to her rookie year on the world tour, which opened with a win over four-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore in the first round.

Gilmore was then eliminated in the quarter-finals by Sydney's Laura Enever, who went on to lose to Wright in the semis.

Defending champion Gilmore put her elimination from the first event of the year down to mental stress rather than problems with her wrist.

Gilmore was eliminated by Enever 15.67 to 12.50 in the first event since her wrist was broken when she was attacked by a man wielding a metal bar outside her Tweed Heads home unit in December.

Kelly Slater wins the quiksilver pro Gold coast beating Taj Burrows.

THE RECAP.
MARCH 9TH, 2011
BY SAMPATERSON

The 2011 Quiksilver Pro Snapper Rocks was won by Kelly Slater (11.20) defeating Taj Burrow (10.17). It was a slow boring start to the final but it surely ended in fireworks. If you happened to miss the final, here’s a minute-by-minute breakdown of what happened.

…….

35:00 The 2011 Quiksilver Pro final kicks off. Kelly Slater in red. Taj Burrow in white.

32.30 Kelly takes off on small wave, races down the line and launches into a punt. He then comes around the section and pulls in. It’s a small tube and but still the crowd goes mental. He receives a 5.00.

29.30 Kelly attempts to off late under the lip. He eats ****.

28.50 Kelly takes off and blasts the back out of a wave in front of Taj. He falls off.

25.55 Kelly tries to force Taj into a wave.

25.30 Taj paddles in to his first real wave. He lines up a few turns but falls on the most critical turn. An opportunity wasted. He scores a 3.00

22.40 Kelly sprays Taj on a bumpy wave. It’s nothing spectacular but Kelly is building momentum as he receives a 5.27

15.30 Taj drops in on Kelly because he has priority. The wave fattens out. Taj looks like he’s beginning to panic. It’s a 1.40

14.20 Needing a 7.27, Taj takes off on a ****ty wave and flicks out. Taj looks flustered and out of rhythm.

12.50 Taj takes off and flicks off immediately.

12.40 Kelly falls on the take off. He’s still in the lead.

12.30 The two surfers battle to gain priority. It’s handed to Taj.

11.20 Taj uses priority and paddles into a good looking set. He melts and falls on his first turn. He then catches the next wave and flicks off. Things aren’t looking good for Taj.

9.10 Taj catches another wave and pushes the first turn too hard. He falls of the back of the wave and paddles furiously back into the lineup.

6.40 Taj splashes the water in frustration.

6.30 Kelly paddles into an average looking wave. He doesn’t improve his position.

5.50 Taj falls trying to stall. It’s his tenth wave and he hasn’t scored over a 3.00 point ride.

4.00 Taj paddles in and destroys the first turn. He then continues to shred the wave the whole wave in. He receives a 7.17 and is briefly in the lead.

3.40 Kelly takes off behind Taj and improves his second wave scoring a 5.93. He retakes the lead.

1.20 Taj tries to take off in the whitewash and falls.

.30 Kelly takes and cutbacks the whole wave to the inside.

0.00 Kelly Slater wins the final of the Quiksilver Pro Snapper Rocks

……

Also, here’s the Waves Twitter feed from the final day of competition.

……

FINAL – KELLY SLATER DEF TAJ BURROW

@kellyslater wins the 2011 @QuiksilverAUS Pro. The man is a freak #unbeatable. #quikpro. Congrats @kellyslater

While the focus was on @TajBurrowAus shredding on an insider, @kellyslater was tearing the bag out of one behind him. 1min to go. #quikpro

Story of the @QuiksilverAUS Pro final…Take off. Pull off. Take off. Pull off.

This is a competition of wave choice and priority tactics. To me no one is winning right now. #quikpro

@kellyslater has @TajBurrowAus by a 1.93 with 15 mins remaining in the final of the Quik Pro. Tight one. #quikpro

2011 @QuiksilverAUS Pro commentary cliches – “Windshield wiper turn” / “Tagged it!” / “Really lit that one up.” #quikpro

@kellyslater doesn’t surf waves. He tells them what to do. He make waves barrel for him. I love that man . #quikpro

@TajBurrowAus Vs @kellyslater . Oh its on. #quikpro1

SEMI FINAL 2 – TAJ BURROW DEF JORDY SMITH

3 mins to go. Semi final 2 @QuiksilverAUS Pro. @jordysmith88can do it. He only needs 17 out of 10. Easy does it. #quikpro

@jordysmith88 throws down a chop hop cheeze whiz in a semi final at the @QuiksilverAUS Pro. A chop hop. Wow.#quikpro

@kellyslater through to the final of the @QuiksilverAUS Pro. Tiago surfed super well. Kelly surfed super human. #quikpro

SEMI FINAL 1 – KELLY SLATER DEF TIAGO PIRES

Imagine @kellyslater just made that full-rote oop? Is he for real? Tiago’s in combo-land and rattle-land. Kelly Slater is a freak. #quikpro

Tiago Pires. Kelly Slater has this man in combo-land. Will Tiago get his token last-min heat turnaround against Kelly? I doubt it. #quikpro

Game on kids. Semi final 1 @QuiksilverAUS Pro is go. @kellyslater vs Tiago Pires. Live NOW! Don’t count out anyone… #quikpro

QUARTER FINAL 4 -JORDY SMITH DEF ALEJO MUNIZ

Once again, the @QuiksilverAUS Pro shows it colours as the contest of the BEST…COMEBACK . #quikpro

Unlucky @alejomuniz . You surfed sick! You really put it to @jordysmith88. Jordy advances. Lets be honest though, he was tearing. #quikpro

QUARTER FINAL 3 – TAJ BURROW DEF BRETT SIMPSON

@TajBurrowAus goes through. @BrettSimpo goes home. Amazing heat. Amazing surfing. Amazing waves. Next Jordy Smith v Alejo Muniz #quikpro

@TajBurrowAus or @BrettSimpo? Simpo takes the lead. Taj takes the lead. Simpo takes the lead. Taj takes the lead. Back & forth #quikpro

QUARTER FINAL 2 – TIAGO PIRES DEF MATT WILKINSON

Headline of this competition – “The Comeback” Pires takes Wilko in the dying mins by a .24. This is also known as a bees willy. #quikpro

It’s all tactics from @mattwilko8. Best block in the game. “No Tiago, you won’t be taking off and no you won’t be beating me.” #quikpro

5 mins to go & Pires needs a 7.34 to take Wilko. Can he do it? I’m sure he can. Will he do it? He needs to find the waves first.#quikpro

QUARTER FINAL 1 – KELLY SLATER DEF DUSTY PAYNE

Nope. Dusty is done. Wilko or Tiago?I’m calling Wilko but who knows. This comp has proved so unpredictable. No one is a sure thing. #quikpro

I’d usually say Dusty is done here but the way this competition has gone so far with late comebacks no one is ruled out. #quikpro

@kellyslater V Dusty Payne. Kelly just opened with a crazy tube. Possibly longest of the comp so far. Stall. Barrel. Stall. Barrel #quikpro

Oh yes it is. Who your pick? RT > “@QuiksilverAUS: It’s the morning of the finals. #quikpro

Somehow I sat through most of the coverage today, is pretty entertaining. It was probably the first surfing event i've watched.
