Sharks sign Feki to first grade
15 Dec, 2011 01:34 PM

HERE is the Cronulla Sharks' latest signing: a Tongan-born centre.
For the last few years Sosaia Feki has been a member of the strong New Zealand Warriors squad, which shined this year when they managed to get three teams play in all three grand finals.

Feki was a member of the under 20s Toyota Cup team that edged out the North Queensland Cowboys in extra time. He was in the Warriors side that won the 2010 grand final.

In the past two years Feki scored 15 tries for the young Warriors.

Aged just 20, the 90-kilogram, 188-centimetres tall youngster — a Junior Kiwis International Player this year — is still eligible for Toyota Cup.

He represents an investment in the future for Shane Flanagan's first grade team.

Feki joined the Sharks training squad recently and has impressed Sharks trainers with his attitude.

He's also not a bad goalkicker.

Looks like he can still play NYC. Nice. Would rather treat this guy as a prospect the right way if possible.

Nah, finished NYC this year I think Mark.

Regardless, he needs to be playing against men from now anyway. Been there, done that in NYC.

On the whole, a good signing. Good frame, good skill set and a decent defender out wide by all accounts. A bit more size on him and he could be a bit of a taller version of S'au with more skills.

Hmm think you're right, that article must be wrong then.

Anyone know the cutoff for NYC? If you turn 21 in say December can you still play because you'll be 20 during the whole season?

Mr Wright will be able to say for sure, but I'm pretty sure its just what age you turn that year. So all 1991 kids are ineligible.

that is why the NYC under 20's is crap for the young kids it should be raised to the under 23's.

Give them a couple more years to develop.

This kid used to be good.... Then he took an arrow in the knee.

Lol in all seriousness, Poms and Best are still the number 1 pair at our club. With Wright and Mills right behind them

That would make it worse for the young kids. There are 17 spots in the team during each game and it's currently filled by kids up to the age of 20. If you make it under 23 it means that the 19 year olds will have no chance of getting a crack, and most 20 year olds too.

I somewhat agree Mark, but at least those 19 year olds could be sticking with local A-Grade comps until they get a crack in the NYC. If it were up to me, I would make it under 21s again, but really the age limit on the isn't the problem- its the lack of a good quality reserve grade.

Agreed, the NYC doesn't need fixing, the NSW Cup does.

I'd be happy for a rule like you're allowed to have 4 players that are 21 or something like that. It'd allow a bit more leadership in the squad which would help the development of the guys fresh out of SG Ball, and it'd also allow some guys to further develop.

So does that heading indicate he is the 25th player? Happy with this signing he sounds like a genuine centre and i'm sure he will bulk up more by the start of the season.

The year they turn 20 is there last eligible year. It doesn't matter if they are 20 all the way through the season and turn 21 in December that would still make them ineligible.
