FROM NRL.COM 24/5/08

Four more Sydney NRL clubs have joined South Sydney in claiming they are under serious threat of extinction due to the ongoing financial crisis in rugby league.

While the Rabbitohs are reportedly struggling to make ends meet under the co-ownership of Peter Holmes a Court and Hollywood actor Russell Crowe, several other Sydney clubs are feeling the pinch of the NSW government's increased poker machine taxes.

Parramatta, St George Illawarra, Penrith and the Bulldogs - all heavily reliant on grants from leagues clubs - admitted their future was far from certain if the status quo remained.

"We're under massive pressure as well, just like every other club in Sydney," Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg said.

"We're on notice that our grant may well be affected going into next year.

"We're all in the same boat here and the future livelihood of Sydney clubs are all under threat."

The remaining Sydney clubs - Manly, Wests Tigers and the Sydney Roosters - said while they had moved away from being so reliant on leagues club grants, they too had been and would continue to be grossly affected by a reduction in funding.

Cronulla did not return AAP's calls.

Unfortunately its the way sport has gone...

AFL > All 10 Victorian Teams can't survive...
NRL > All 10 NSW Teams can't survive...

Why don't they look to American Sporting leagues for ideas??

They should take up the way soccer does, you sign for a club and if the clubs develop e a player they can sell him when ever they want and receive a transfer fee it is more like a football factory developing a product and selling it to the highest bidder the more the player gets the more the club gets

i think its just the way its gone down. if a club is counting on gate takings to keep it afloat, they are all in trouble.
Live free (apart from your fox fees) telecasts on a 50" plasma in the comfort of your own living room, beer outa the fridge every time the wife walks past,
just cant compete with a
5+ hrs driveing, gate fees, expensive beer ( cant drink drive anyway ).
I know its wrong, and lazy, but its just the way it is now.
Maybe a pay per view on fox would help them out more. On the down side though it would mean that I would only pay for the sharks games, and i imagine a lot of other ppl would be the same. So the idea of getting the game out there to the youngsters would be comprimised.
i just dont know what the answer is.
