Well the Rugby League season is over so we go full steam ahead into the new Football season here in Australia. This thread is for all Australian Football related topics for the upcoming 2018/19 season.

Socceroos

We start with on a bit of a sad note as news has come out tonight that one of the Socceroos greatest ever leaders, Mile Jedinak, has announced his retirement from International Football. Him and his beard were a pillar of strength for the Socceroos in the recent World Cup campaign and even longer before that. He will be damn near impossible to replace. Here's a link:
https://www.socceroos.com.au/news/mile-jedinak-retires-caltex-socceroos-international-career

Upcoming Fixtures for the Socceroos

15th October: vs Kuwait Away (Friendly) Time and venue TBC
17th November: vs South Korea Home (Friendly) Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane @ 7:50pm
20th November: vs Lebanon Home (Friendly) ANZ Stadium, Sydney @ 7:30pm

FFA Cup

We're up to the Semi finals, the definite tie of the round will be the Sydney derby being played out at Penrith. Meanwhile in the other semi, Adelaide try to avoid embarressment against Victorian side Bentleigh Greens

Semi Finals

5th October: Bentleigh Greens vs Adelaide United. Kingston Heath Sports Complex, Cheltenham, VIC @ 7:30pm.
6th October: Western Sydney Wanderers vs Sydney FC. Penrith Stadium, Sydney, NSW @ 7:30pm.

A-League

The A-League is fast approaching after its usual mammoth pre-season, it kicks off on Friday 19th October in Adelaide as the Reds host the reigning premiers, Sydney FC.
If you look at the recruitment of every team you can honestly say that every single club's roster has greatly improved, it has been one of the best recruitment periods in the leagues history. I'd say Melbourne Victory are probably the early favourites unfortunately looking at who they've brought in, they've got their recruitment spot on with some monster signings. Sydney FC, despite losing their two best players this year, have replaced them very effectively, they'll be among the favourites again. Melbourne City's roster looks top notch this year, but can they finally deliver on their potential? The most intriguing team this year is actually the Perth Glory IMO, their recruitment has been absolutely nuts. They've had big off seasons before but haven't delivered in the season. With Popovic at the helm and some top line recruits, it's shaping up as an interesting year for Perth.

What’s everyone think of the Usain Bolt experiment so far.

Great publicity for the game and great for the fans but is he a realistic chance of making the Mariners squad?

He may be the fastest man on the planet but to be a pro footballer you need to have learned the skills at an early age.

Scored two goals but I gather the opposition was pretty poor. Won’t get that sort of defence even in the A League.

One of the goals was an open goal tap in as well. They were playing subpar opposition. Still a double is a double. Definitely hasn’t proven enough yet though.

Sydney FC’s Trent Buhagier has torn his ACL. After pretty much being the MVP of the FFA Cup so far he was set for a break out year. Such a shame.

Looks like Usain Bolt is going to bail on central coast after 1 game.
Going to go to chase the big money in Europe.

Wow. That would be pretty funny if that happened. The league is better off without these kind of gimmicks anyway.

I don't follow the A-League, but I have been following the expansion news and today they put a line through Wollongong and Ipswich.

From all reports Wollongong were pretty well placed to support a team, so them getting the arse would make you think the Southern Expansion are pretty well placed to get a team.

I don't think our stadium is any part of their bid, so if they get in they will be building a 20k stadium in the Shire.

Not so fast. All the whispers going around is that Southern Expansion is a distant second to the South West Sydney bid. Apparently it’s not even close at the moment.
From what I’ve seen, if they have their heart set on a 3rd Sydney team (I don’t think we need another one, but anyway) then that bid makes a heap more sense anyway. One of the reasons being, it doesn’t eat into the territory’s of Sydney FC and WS as badly as Southern Expansion.

Is that the Macarthur bid?

The only reason I'm thinking Southern Expansion is for the sole reason that they ruled out Wollongong, which both bids covered.

I'd only be happy for the SE to go ahead if it was beneficial to the club, like we could rent out our stadium in the off-season etc.

Apart from that, I got friends heavily involved in the CBR bid, so I'm hoping they get up

My mate just put on Facebook that the CBR expansion bid has joined with the Wollongong Wolves to take at least one game to WIN Stadium

Actually hope Canberra get a licence instead of another Sydney team. Probably won’t though.
