Sharks, Warriors, Parra & Knights have all pulled out.

Warriors were said to be the favorites for him but apparently weren't willing to talk further after his asking price was set at around 850k a season. Wants a 3-year deal according to the rumour mill.

Bears have said only way they would sign him on that type of money is if he joins them next season.

Still in their best two halves as I wouldn't say Bud is ready, even though they seem to like him, and not sure they have much else available in house.

Unless they went a Grey or Dufty transition to 6...
 
@G.H Shark PVL reckons he wants the cap to be $20m.

Dearden's contract doesn't have a dollar value. He gets paid 12% of cap = $2.4m

Still reckon the Sharks can't pay their halves $1m each?

Almost all players will be ratcheted up though won't they? I assume he just meant $1m each under the current cap. So that would move to whatever it looks like for the new cap.

Yeah they will.

He was talking about signing a player for 2028.

If people continue to obsess over the $1m they are going to have a lot to be upset about in the coming years.

That non-ratcheted Taumalolo contract is looking pretty good these days.

I’ve got some bad news for you then…

If the cap goes to $20m a $1m player (Nicho) goes to $1.66m and a $600k player (Tricky) goes to $1m.

He said it specifically in reference to a player being signed for 2028.

Even if he hadn’t, anyone who signs more than a one year deal is going to be under the 2028 cap.

Conservative estimate for 2028 cap before today was $15-16m.

Even under today’s cap $1m isn’t that much. Cronk at the Roosters would be over $2m based the 2026 cap. DCE’s second-last Manly contract similar. Ash Taylor $1.6m+

Yeah maybe - but even in today’s terms it’s not a great argument.

People like to use the $1m player tag as either shock value because they think the guy sucks and gets paid too much, or as the mythical point where you only pay superstars.

It’s like Wayne Bennett saying he’d never pay more than $300k for a prop… but when $300k was 1/8 of the cap. $1.5m in today’s money.

Why hold on to the antiquated concept that only superstars get $1m when there are heaps of non-superstars who have been paid that already and we are on the cusp of having 50+ guys in the league making that or more?

Geez - if the cap really does go up to $20m you are probably looking at guys like Sexton, Brooks and Pezet being $1m halves. Do we still have to endure everyone bagging Nicho for making a mil after every loss when he’s paid the same as those guys?

(Not calling out GH here. Just sick of the same inaccurate info being recycled).

He won't be getting paid the same though. Nicho will ratchet up to $1.6m and the $1m goal posts will just move to somewhere around there. Forget the number and just call it marquee money. The argument will endure forever.
