Allan has some utility value, where I don't think Kennedy does... Makes his value on the market a bit hard to pin down as a club would need to be buying him as a fullback and I could see a situation where it's as a backup and not a starter, especially if we didn't offer a new contract. He hasn't had a great run recently to push his case.

That's not to say I think he's crap. I think he's pretty good when he's firing. Just that the need for him could be limited under the (hypothetical) circumstances.

For as much criticism as he got last season he finished 6th of regular fullbacks for 'total try involvements'
Paps (26 in 12)
Drinkwater (39 in 22)
Mitchell (30 in 17)
Gutherson (43 in 28)
Tedesco (33 in 24)
Kennedy (26 in 19)

More to being a fullback of course and needs quality outside you as many of these are try assists or contributions
But it's good company to find yourself in

If you are a struggling club there is some evidence he can help find you points.

He also struggled with that shoulder injury for a fair chunk of the season that ended up with him on the sidelines

You left off Reece Walsh for the opposition.

Yeah he wasn't as bad as people think. Didn't finish the year well but was pretty good for a large chunk.

Well he shouldn’t.
Mate you're dreaming, he will 100% get more than 300k, especially with the increased cap.
I think Gumby is blinded by his hatred for Kennedy.

I think WK will be on more than $300k and if he isn’t and he plays to his potential then $300 is a steal

Total try involvements meaning he touched the ball? The stats I am looking at show 5 tries and 6 try assists.

At any rate he had injury problems last year, but he was so far off the top fullbacks in terms of his defense and his support play - sure, he is really safe under the high ball and when he sweeps wide to set up a line break to a winger he is great, but there are BIG issues that were very obviously in need of addressing.

You can't just have a fullback that has such big problems otherwise Matt Dufty would be a thing.

What stats are you looking at?

I think For has a "try involvement" stat. It's basically for someone who threw the last pass but didn't get awarded the try assist. Think "fullback chimes in to make the extra man and create a 3 on 2, it goes through the hands and the winger scores". Try assist goes to the player who created the overlap and try involvement goes to the player who threw the final pass. Try assists heavily favour fullbacks or halves who run the overs line (the guy out the back) on a block play leading to a try, since it is the "extra man" who they award the stat to. They are also weighted against centres, since it is literally impossible for the guy next to the winger to be the man who creates a 3 on 2.

Like metres for forwards, I don't think these stats tells you who the good fullbacks are, but it can tell you a little bit about how their team uses them. The list posted by bort is a good shortlist of "fullbacks who usually get used that way". E.g. Some teams (like Penrith last year) will have the back rower run the overs line, so their fullback is less-often in these 3-on-2 situations. The Sharks don't have second rowers who are noted for their passing prowess so it's the fullback or the halves running that line every time.

Theres other options avaliable in 2025 - both here and overseas - Welsby for example.
Anything longer than 12 month extension and we miss that boat
I think it’s always good to have a backup.

Also, do we really want to demotivate Kennedy that much by giving him only a 1 year contract? 2 years seem reasonable to me and we can always reassess at the end of next year and still make a play for whoever we want… or prep Dykes.

**** Rules for Development Players ****
Development players are ineligible to be selected in the NRL until round 11, unless the club has dispensation.

To be eligible for dispensation, the team must have exhausted all of the available options for that position. E.g. Iro can’t play ahead of Ikuvalu, Hiroti or Tracey… and Puru can’t play ahead of Trindall, Tracey, Atkinson or Graham.
interestingly Puru was named on the extended bench this week thou.

Yeah. We have been talking about that in another thread. At the start of last year they relaxed some of the rules around dev or even T&T players being named on the extended bench so that teams could cover themselves for Covid. We think that they have left this relaxation in place. The dispensation required for a player to appear in the 17 still applies though.
