PRIZED Wagga export Cameron King has added another jewel to his rugby league crown, yesterday named in the Australian Rugby League (ARL) Junior Kangaroos squad to take on the Kiwis in a two-game Test series in New Zealand later this month.

Currently contracted to St George Illawarra alongside fellow Kangaroos junior Jamie Soward, 19-year-old King said he was amazed at his inclusion.

"I had a shoulder operation at the start of this year and I've probably only played about six games this season, so I was really surprised," he said.

"It's awesome, I just didn't expect it."

King says the announcement caps off a superb year, despite hardly touching boot to turf.

"I was really down at the start of the year with my operation and everything and then I made my first-grade debut in the last round against Souths," he said.

"We were minor premiers at the end of that game so that was a pretty awesome feeling."

Ironic as it seems, the young hooker still regards his Kangaroos under 7s coach, and his first grade Dragons mentor as one and the same.

"I guess I was really lucky because I was coached by Jamie Soward and Nigel Plum in those days," he said.

"It's kind of funny in a way because now I train next to Jamie every day, and he's a great mentor for me.

"We do a lot of work together."

Having captained the Australian Schoolboys side last year, this is not King's first endeavour for his country.

"It's always a massive honour to play for your country, and it's something that every footballer hopes to do," he said.

"Both games are being played in New Zealand, I just hope the home-ground advantage isn't too much.

"Hopefully it won't be cold and raining, but they have a pretty good team."

Known as one of the good guys of the league, King uses his position with the Dragons to influence school children about fitness and nutrition.

"I work with coaching and development and we go around to primary schools promoting healthy lifestyles," he said.

"We just go into the classrooms and help them out with some coaching tips, too, like passing and kicking.

"I love it. You turn up in the Dragons shirt and the kids go nuts."

Currently residing in Cronulla, the Kangaroos junior gets home to Wagga as often as he can.

"My dad still lives there so every time I get a break I try and get down to see him," he said.

"Most of my mates have moved away or play in the NRL now but it's always good to go back."
