For a short period in the middle of the Super League war, it seemed St George were almost certain to merge with Easts due to "falling crowds, seriously declining junior numbers and the loss of Penfolds as sponsor." (RLW)

Even the Saints League Club boss was quoted as saying it was "inevitable."

Cronulla looked like being the beneficiary with the possibility of getting Stevens, Mundine, Tallis and Brown. Ultimately only Jason and Paul Stevens made the switch.

Anthony Mundine was set to go to Canterbury until Super League was ruled illegal in early 1996. He returned to the Dragons for the 1996 season before signing with Brisbane for 1997.

Tallis was signed by Brisbane for 1996, but was also stopped by the court decision. He sat out the season rather than play with St George, but joined the Broncos in 1997.

yeah but mundine is a wanker.
i'm glad we didn't get him, no matter how good he was.
and tallis was a jerk for sitting the season out, but i still would've taken him.
