For the last few seasons the centres have been a bit of a problem area for us but this season we appear somewhat better off depth-wise. I have been giving a bit of thought as to who my preferred centre combination would be for 2010 and I have opted for Collis and Pomeroy. Collis is in my opinion our best new signing, he is a real talent and will give us plenty of speed and attacking potential out wide if he can stay injury free. Whilst I am a big fan of Matt Wright he is still a rookie and as Ricky has freely admitted, was rushed into first grade last season before he was ready. I know that Poms had a terrible season in 2009 and that he is still not the most popular player on these forums, but I am hopeful that he will return to his best form this coming season - he is certainly capable of this, as he was one of our leading tryscorers and a fringe Origin candidate only a few seasons ago.

I would be interested to hear others' thoughts on our best centre combination - have also attached a poll to this thread.

I think Collis & Bakuya is our strongest pairing, BUT, would rather see 3) Collis & 4) Wright IF 13) Bakuya.

M Wright is looking massive, really hope he has a good season. For mine Bakuya will give us a bit of X factor, and if we use him at lock we will be adding a bit more speed to the side instead of having Gal at lock (which he could still play there in defense)

With juniors like,

Fergo, Wright, Stapo & Bakuya (only 20) there is some great talent there which can hopefully be full time first graders this comp with a full pre season under their belt. (not to mention A Kelly)

No Tautai? I wouldn't have voted for him, but some might like to.

I went for Collis and Wright.
Collis is a certainty- classy, not particularly quick but very skillful and an intelligent footballer which is another thing we've been missing for a long time. He's a pure right side player, and I think with Fergo outside him that side will be a trully potent combination and we'll score plenty of tries down that edge (particularly if Fergo can dominate in the air and score some from the bomb, Folau style).

The left side is more of an issue, but I went with Matt Wright because he's the future (and "the future is now!") and for a couple of other reasons- Cov's been kept for his leadership and kicking, and there's not much point having him lead a 26 year old Pomeroy. Secondly, we saw this season the success of similarly talented young centres in Croker and Idris after having quiet debut years (and they played less 1st grade in 2008 than Wright did in 2009). Thirdly, Wright has earnt it- he was consistently better than Pom last year, and improved as the season went on. Pom looked in severe need of confidence last year, but I think he needs to earn his spot back next year.

The major issue I see with having Wright on the left is the fact he's been a right centre as a junior and may be dodgy defensively down on that side, but that should be fixable given an off-season and the trials.

BTW- good idea Mega, maybe we should do this for other contentious positions like fullback, half, hooker and backrow (ie everything but the starting props) put together a "Sharks Forever Choice 17" of the team we'd like to see in round 1 (like they do on the GH forum).

Update - have added Tautai as an option in the poll. Does Orcher have any experience in the centres? I see him exclusively as a fullback.

Thanks for the comments guys, keep them coming.

Perhaps wing too, but not the centres.

hahahaa, lol

That is a great idea!

In regards to Tautai, I hope he is used at wing, which is where he played nearly all of his' first grade footy for the eels. (Remembering that this guy kept Grothe out of first grade for nearly a whole season)

We have Collis now which hopefully will take over the kicking duties, so for mine I am hoping that Tautai isnt used at centre but instead as winger paired with Fergo.

We really dont lose much and he is another player with a lot of potential.

collis and somebody...

i went for wright as he's sort of the incumbent.i thought he went alright this year for a youngun but needs a bit of experience and work on some areas of his game(defence....)

i see poms as a backup if things dont go to plan(another backrow option more than anything-esp if we have injuries in the forwards)

bakuya is the other that i want to see step up-there seems to be debate over whether he's a backrower or centre(pretty much the same thing these days-debate away!)

fergo and the stapler i see as wing/fullback material.

its one area of our team that i'd like to see stabilised early-then we can get on with arguing about who should be our starting halves!

With Orcher's pace he's a fullback wing option in my book - actually prefer to see him play outside Fergo on the wing. I reckon that'd be a great pairing.

For 2010, I'd like to see Stapo holding down the fullback position with Fergo centre and Orcher wing on the right side and Bakuya centre and Covell wing on the left.

Add to the mix Tupou drifting out on the right side of the ruck and I reckon you've got a lethal attack down the right side.

Id say Collis and Poms but Poms could face the AXE very early if he shows the same form as he did in 2009. As Fitz said Fergo would be worth a look at Centre
For the Backrow Id go Tupou and Gallen with Bukuya at Lock and Williams on the bench to cover the Backrow and Centres

Similar view to Kiwishark, i think collis definitely and poms should at least get the first crack due to good form in previous years (other than last year). After getting the opportunity to put last year behind him if he isn't performing by as early as round 3 or 4 then he is gone imo. Then i would bring in Wright.

I would say collis and Mat, mat really needs some more time I feel he was moved around a bit last year during games if my memory serves me correct.

But then i would like to see fergo as well i am aware he can take a pass not sure how well he can give though.

I'd also have to say Collis and Wright but you never know what might happen. I see Poms more as a backrower this year coming off the bench and skirting out wide.

Unfortunately we still don't have any gamebreakers amongst those names.

That is where we are going to struggle.

I think Fergo is one of our best prospects but he played a couple of games at centre early last year and didn't impress and played his best on the wing so i would much prefer to see him at least start the year there. Having said that though it could be argued (and is likely correct) that he was still getting used to first grade in the games he played at centre and will be better now.

And Chad i think u are right about Poms playing second row, i think that is what will likely happen. But again i would like to see him start the year at centre. That being said choosing Matt Wright is not a bad choice and I could certainly live with that decision. Ricky will probably simply pick who has a better off-season of those three guys.

My main reason for thinking of Fergo in the centres is the amount he's bulked up in the last twelve months... I reckon he's now got the size to take on the likes of the big centres running around like Inglis & co.

Also, I'd just like to see him get his hands on the ball a bit more - I do reckon he's got a little extra something in the tank.

Collis for sure, the other spot is a lottery.Probably Wright has the edge with Pommeroy off the bench covering centre and sewcond row.Bakuya is the wild card in this.Injury free , he could easily start at centre or lock.Highly regarded by the coaching staff.

Go and look at that recent team photo and look at Poms. He'll be playing back row for sure. He was bloody massive.

Broderick Wright to the centers. leave Ferguson on the wing. He was great for us there last year. we dont need to turn our wingers into centers its not needed.

Welcome to Emu Plains, please be sure to visit our
you do realise Broderick Wright is a 2nd rower/prop

Collis and Matthew Wright

Wright needs to stay in the centres to improve his game and Collis is our best centre, in time Fergo will be a centre, Tautai is a winger not a centre, Stapo is a fullback [potential 5/8] and Orcher is a fullback
