Late flurry of tries secures victory for Dirty Reds

The Glebe Dirty Reds have come away with a 28-18 win over the St Mary’s Saints in the Qualifying Final of the Ron Massey Cup on Saturday.

Within two minutes Glebe broke into the backfield to send winger Michael Pearsall in to score on the left touchline, but St Mary’s responded quickly when five-eighth Anthony Layoun snuck over from dummy-half. Halfback Zac Greene converted to take a 6-4 lead.

Greene later extended the lead to four points with a penalty goal, but the Saints pushed the margin even further to 12-4 when former Penrith Panther and Wests Tiger Geoff Daniela scored in the 31st minute.

The Reds weren’t done before half-time when they jagged another try through No.14 Jackson Stewart. Halfback Eli Levido added the extra two to bring the score at the break to 12-10.

It became a to-and-fro contest in the second half when Riley Travers raced away to score from a loose ball, before the Saints scored again in their next attacking set through hooker Luke Sommerton. And despite Greene nailing the conversion to gain an 18-16 lead, the momentum was with the Reds for the remaining 20 minutes.

Glebe went on to score two more tries via fullback James Coyne and centre Jackson Ferris, with Levido converting each of them on the way to a 28-18 victory.

Part of the Jets wrap up

Sharks and Newtown’s beast prop Franklin Pele is starting to make a habit of scoring runaway tries. The 21-year-old, who stands at 191cm and weighs 130kg, out-ran four Blacktown players to score his second try of the afternoon. It was a similar effort to the length of the field try he scored in Round 17. Pele finished with two linebreaks, five tackle busts, two offloads and 157 running metres to go with his two tries. He also made 11 tackles with zero misses.

He's definitely got some toe when he's in the clear. Hopefully he kicks on, just needs some time and not to be so far down the pecking order at a club

The rest of the Jets wrap up

Hooker Jayden Berrell played a big part in the 50-8 win over Blacktown, setting up three tries, getting four linebreak assists, a tackle busts and making 23 tackles with one miss.

Kayal Iro, who has been filling in at fullback, was also instrumental with a try, a linebreak, seven tackle busts, three offloads and 250 metres along with 12 tackles — zero misses.

The regular season for both NSW Cup and Queensland Cup wrap up this weekend but there’s still a minor premiership and finals series to decide.

The Panthers have a bye but will be watching Newtown’s clash with the Bulldogs closely. If Newtown win they will claim the minor premiership, but if they lose it’s Penrith’s.

It's Newtown in Queensland though, so know that before you read it. There is no relevance to us.

Jets v Bulldogs is the live stream game. 3pm Saturday.

Jets are 1st.
Panthers are 2 points behind, have a better f/a, and have a bye.
Bulldogs are 3rd

NSW Cup is top 5. First place gets the week off and only needs to win one game to make the GF.

So...

Win (or draw) and get the week off and easy path the the GF, or
Lose and play the Bulldogs again next week in a 2v3 non-elimination final

Speaking of Finals, how'd your lads go in the GF last week Burgo? Someone may have already asked but I missed it.

Didn't get the chocolates mate. Lost 14-6. It was 10-6 for almost the entire second half, and the other guys got a (very dubious) try with about 3-4 minutes to go and put it to bed.

Ref was absolutely ****-house, but our boys had their chances and didn’t take them. We came up with really simple errors on tackle 1 or 2 the first five times we got inside their 20, and let them off the hook 3-4 times with penalties when we had them pinned. Our best forward went off hurt after 20 minutes with the score at nil-all, so that was pretty big factor too.

All in all it was a pretty good season for the boys. The team who beat us has been together for 4 years. In our team no more than any 4 kids knew each other back in February, and 1/3 of our team were first year players.

Imo both our team and theirs belonged in a higher division (we beat 3rd place by 50+). Being put in a low div was a big factor in us getting the arse-end of the reffing stick.

The way it works here is they go Div1, Div2, and then kinda randomly sort teams in to 4 lower divs. 2 for Northside and 2 for Southside. We got put in “Southside 4” even though we beat a team in Div3 by 50+, and also beat the grand-finalists from 3 in a trial when we only had 11 players.

Dirty play aside, I was actually really glad there was another decent team in our comp. If they hadn’t been equally screwed over like us and put in our comp, we win the GF by 50. Trophies are nice, but I think our kids (and theirs) learnt more from a tough, close game than they could have from an easy win.

We belong in 2 next year. Should have been there this year (but we wouldn’t have sniffed the finals). I’m not keen on coaching a lower div again. It’s too hard watching refs ignore dangerous play. I can’t handle it.
