Thanks for sharing that. I was hoping their would be a solution to players training with the NRL squad but playing for the Jets.

Yeah - it's great news. One idea raised was running a small reserve grade comp for only NRL-contracted players from Sydney teams, where each team was comprised of players from two NRL sides. I don't know if that was ever seriously considered.

Another small feeder note. The Ipswich Jets will be sending some players to Newcastle for pre-season training. Ipswich have previously been a Brisbane feeder team but the Walkers had a falling out with Bennett a couple of years ago over Marion Seve (they put him on the bench).

It also sounds like going off comments from Abdo yesterday that if the situation stays the same or improves then there could actually be no bubble next year but it's important to start planning now for a bubble.

I still think they could have gotten the comps going for a short period this year and were too hasty to end the comp.

Easy to say in hindsight, but loads of things stopping quickly helped contribute to the overall slowing of spread. Many things that shut down could probably look back and say they could have got away with not doing so but that's based on having a fairly good outcome from the fact that so many things did shut down.
The feeder comps maybe would have run fine but the NRL wanted to maximise the chance they could get through the season so they had to keep a strict bubble which then locked players out of being able to drop down to Cup.

Of course but they just cancelled it. They could have postponed it to a shorter comp in July for example and worked with the NRL and if they had to cancel it a bit later so be it.

Not much point going on about it i guess, just frustrates me that players like Pele, Trindall, Ferris and the like missed out on valuable development time.

They were all trapped in the bubble and wouldn't have been able to play anyway. It is only players outside of the bubble that would have been able to play and most of them I think just dropped back into park footy teams and the like to keep playing (I think?).
With how things were at the time the NRL couldn't risk the comp by compromising their bubbles just so these guys can get some games. And at the same time running the Cup comps without any NRL contracted or development players wasn't really worthwhile either.

Did we do much with that relationship? Last I heard was the original announcement

I think they sent some players over late last pre-season. There were other plans, but Covid knocked them on the head.

May be we missed the opportunity. Feels a bit like the ladies league... We had the good concept but someone else took it to the next level and we missed out

A bit of feeder news from the Newtown Jets website:

At this stage 13 players have signed Newtown RLFC playing contracts for 2021; several others are still involved in negotiations but are very close to signing; there are more players who will be signing contracts with Newtown after having undertaken pre-season training programs with the Cronulla Sharks up to Xmas; plus there is another group who are currently training with Newtown on a “train and trial” basis.

On top of these numbers, there will be other players from the Cronulla Sharks full-time NRL squad who will made available for selection with Newtown once the competition rounds start.

The Canterbury Cup NSW competition will receive a new sponsor’s name prior to the commencement of the 2021 season. There will be ten clubs competing in the 2021 competition. The New Zealand Warriors have entered into a partnership with the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Queensland Cup; the Canberra Raiders have decided to use their players in the Canberra Raiders Cup (Group 8) competition; and Canterbury-Bankstown and Mounties have entered into a partnership.

The full 2021 draw for Newtown’s competition will be released early in the New Year.

The Jets remain in partnership with fellow foundation club the Glebe Dirty Reds. The Glebe boys will play exclusively under the Dirty Reds name in the Ron Massey Cup in 2021.

The Cronulla-Caringbah RLFC will replace Sydney University as Newtown’s partnership club in the NSWRL Sydney Shield competition.

Would have been nice if they named the players :(

Lachlan Scarpelli is one of them
