Creating a new thread for this, since moving the old one was causing me so much pain. I have archived the 2018-2020 Jets thread here.

http://www.sharksforever.com/forums/showthread.php?188383-Newtown-Jets-2018-2020

Sharks feeders for 2021 are expected to be:

- NSW Cup: Newtown Jets (NSW Cup)
- Ron Massey Cup: Glebe-Burwood Wolves (a.k.a. Glebe Dirty Reds) and Kaiviti Silktails
- Sydney Shield: Sydney University

The Future of Henson Park has been secured

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne has announced that Council has secured the future of Henson Park following a $2 million investment to upgrade the ground.

The project will include improvements to the playing surface, new drainage and irrigation systems and the installation of water tanks to further improve the sustainability of the ground.

Mayor Byrne said this work will help protect the future of the local clubs that use Henson Park, especially the Newtown Jets.

Like all sporting teams across the globe, the Newtown Jets have been heavily impacted by COVID-19 in 2020. The Canterbury Cup is the highest-grade rugby league competition solely in New South Wales, and a major feeder competition for NRL clubs. It was cancelled after only one round due to the pandemic.

“Local clubs have told us they need these upgrades to make sure they can keep playing at the ground forever,” said Mayor Byrne.

“The Newtown club has fought hard and managed to survive this year, with their main source of income – revenue from home games at Henson Park – having been taken away by COVID-19.

“We are getting this refurbishment completed in the off-season so clubs can be back on the ground in 2021,” said Mayor Byrne.

Stuart McCarthy, Newtown Jets CEO, welcomed the announcement and said it would go a long way to ensuring that another rugby league foundation club is not lost.

“I extend the deepest thanks from everyone at the Newtown Jets to Inner West Council for undertaking this investment. said Mr McCarthy.

“The Jets first played at Henson Park in 1936. We’ve gone through some difficult periods throughout this time, and 2020 has definitely been one of them, but these upgrades to the ground will help keep the Jets flying in 2021 and beyond, said Mr McCarthy.

Henson Park first opened in 1933 and has hosted cricket, rugby league, soccer and Australian rules football teams throughout its history. It was also used as the main venue for track cycling during the 1938 British Empire Games.

Hopefully the lower tiered comps are all back next season. Two years of nothing but NRL would be extremely detrimental.

I think they will but if the NRL has a bubble they might have to leave players out who are in the bubble. So if you're Pele for example and in the bubble you might not be playing for the Jets as I think getting those lower tier comps is just not going to happen.

Or if you do play for those lower comps you need to isolate before coming into the bubble. So will require foresight by the clubs on who gets that much need game time and who might be called up to play.

What is the criteria for entering the bubble?

For example if a player were to go down injured and you had to call someone into the squad surely you could test them and then allow them into the bubble under the proviso that they follow all protocol until they get released back to the second tier?

yeah not sure, might be that simple, but might also be as strict as if you were arriving from over seas.

I can't see any benefit for a mandatory two week quarantine for players entering the bubble ONLY because the bubble doesn't extend to their family, for example during the season Chad had to stay at home when not at training but his wife was going to the shops etc etc which kinda defeats the purpose doesn't it?

It's more about risk minimisation than anything else

Can't do it that way as the virus has an incubation period of ~5 days or so. You could easily infect the entire squad.

Good news!

The NSW Rugby League today confirmed it will run a 10-team NSW Cup competition in 2021 in line with the NRL competition.

NSWRL Head of Football Robert Lowrie said the full home and away second tier competition will kick-off the same weekend as the NRL.

“We are really thrilled to be able to announce that our premier competition will go ahead after the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to cancel it this year,” Lowrie said.

“The competition provides an important pathway to the NRL. Many open age competitions operated in New South Wales during season 2020. Much was learnt about COVID-19 protocols and confidence was gained about the capacity to safely conduct competitions in a COVID-safe way.

“We are therefore very confident of our ability to deliver all of our competitions safely and efficiently during the 2021 season. Additionally, we are working with an NRL representative from the Apollo Committee to construct bio-security protocols to mitigate risk and to enable player movement between the NRL and NSW Cup.”

At our season launch on 3 March 2021, we expect to be able to announce exciting news about a new naming rights partner for our premier competition.

Yep.

Not sure what teams are dropping out as it says a 10 team comp and there was 12 teams this year.

Warriors almost certainly one of them for obvious reasons.
And maybe another club has linked up with a QLD team perhaps ?

Jets will be in it. I got that press release from their newsletter.

So Warriors and Mounties are the two teams not in the comp next year.

Warriors playing in QLD comp

Mounties joined with Canterbury or something? Kind of lost interest in what’s going on with them. So could be wrong

Technically the Warriors aren’t playing Q Cup. They have a feeder arrangement with Redcliffe. That was announced in June.

The NRL team may also play some games at Redcliffe Stadium.

Article about the NSWRL looking at options for having players move between NSW Cup and NRL in 2021.

Currently they are working towards something like this ...
- Players train Monday to Friday in NRL bubble
- Players leave bubble to play NSW Cup
- Players take a Covid test and self-isolate after playing NSW Cup
- Players return to NRL bubble after negative test result
