Visibility of pathways can help with player retention and also attractiveness of the sport to those who may be open to a few different options, especially if there is financial support in these pathways.
If you're 18/19/20 and just missing out on contracts to RL/RU clubs and you can see other kids your age playing League on tv that exposure and possibility of some money could be the difference.
Similarly if your starting to get pulled away from sport in later teens possibility to be on tv in next couple years might be enough to keep some people involved.

Shame Sharks have Jets as feeder .
We can't play NRL at Henson and no way Jets will want to play out of Jubilee or Shark Park in 2022

Yeah I'd much prefer to see us have our own reggies team. Hopefully it happens one day.

Sounds like a lot of these scheduling issues can be remedied by simply bringing back the proper Reserve Grade. Oh well one can dream.

Reserve grade would have positives in NSW but would be disastrous for the Q-Cup. The QRL would never support it.

The scheduling issues also do not exist for Qld NRL teams. Q-Cup and 21’s are already aligned, the two teams travel together and the Colts play before Q-Cup. The only challenge in Qld would be that Brisbane play almost exclusively on Friday night.

So if only aligning Sat/Sun games that's no change for them

That’s right. It just means that this schedule alignment thing effectively only impacts three Q-Cup teams (Burleigh, Tweed, Townsville). Maybe the Broncos feeders play one game each or so at Suncorp, but that was already happening in 2019.

Some news on lower grades. NRL is looking to more closely align NSW/QLD Cup schedules on Saturdays and Sundays to have more curtain raisers prior to NRL games.

This is already a thing in a lot of cases. In 2019 some NSW teams (e.g. Sharks, Panthers, Knights) already played Flegg and/or NSW Cup games as curtain raisers when possible, and both Brisbane and the Titans had QLD Cup games as curtain raisers a few times.

The article suggests it some revolutionary return to "reserve grade", but it's not that at all. The quotes from V'landys indicate that it is really just a matter of aligning in the NRL draw with the NSWRL and QRL to maximise the amount of times this can happen. In some cases it would be really easy (e.g. Cowboys/Blackhawks or having the Dolphins game immediately before the Warriors home games at Redcliffe) whereas others would be a real challenge (e.g. Sharks/Jets or Storm/Falcons).

The best part of this is that they are looking to broadcast it. More feeders and Flegg games on TV is a great thing for the game IMHO.

Peter V’landys has a new mission for 2021 — to bring back all three grades.

The ARLC chairman and NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo’s mandate to give the game back to the fans is set to continue with the return of reserve grade and under-21s games before NRL matches.

In a throwback to rugby league’s halcyon days of the 1980s and 1990s, when fans could follow the development of a rookie from the lower grades into a star of first grade, the NRL brains trust has been in talks with all 16 clubs about the return of “all three grades” this season.

The NRL is “down the track” with corresponding state leagues from the NSWRL and QRL on relaunching the model that will provide footy fans with the opportunity to watch three games inside the same stadium.

The NRL is acutely aware of the financial impact the model may have on some clubs, but believes that returning the lower grades to game day is viable.

Saturday and Sunday match days have been identified as the most likely starting point for the return of the reserve grade and under-21s matches, when possible.

“The concept of having fans being able to see up-and-coming and younger talent in the feeder competitions, or even a superstar making their comeback from injury, we believe that is a great project for us to work on,’’ Abdo said.

“We play NRL matches on Thursday to Sunday and some of the logistical arrangements with aligning the draw with the NSW Cup and Queensland Cup on a Thursday or Friday night, due to a large majority of the players still working jobs, could be problematic.

“But on a Saturday or Sunday, being able to align the draws of the NSW and Queensland Cup, makes sense and we are working on it.

“There’s not a lot of resistance to it. It’s just about aligning who is affiliated to which club and getting the draw to work.

“We’re receiving the co-operation that we need from both the NSWRL and QRL.”

Abdo said the NRL had spoken to host broadcasters Fox Sports and Nine about their mission to bring the stars of the future back into the schedule of an NRL game day.

“That’s what we’re working on,’’ Abdo said. “We want it broadcast, so we’re working with everyone, including Fox Sports and Nine, to see which games could be broadcast.

“We’re working with the NSWRL and the QRL to try and optimise the draw so that when Penrith play, their reserve grade team and possibly under-20s are also playing before on the Saturday.

“We’re hoping to get up to 30 or 40 (lower grade) games this season to maximise that outcome for fans.

“There’s something in there for everyone. It’s much easier in NSW. In Queensland it’s a bit trickier because the Broncos, Cowboys and Titans are aligned with Queensland Cup clubs, but it’s not impossible and we’re working on it.

“There’s not a lot of resistance to it.’’

Some of the game’s most gifted players, including Arthur Beetson, Graham Eadie, Phil Blake, Des Hasler, Andrew Johns, David Peachey and Mat Rogers, had already developed a fan following in the lower grades long before they made their first grade or NRL debuts.

V’landys, as evidenced by his polarising rule changes, has made no secret of his desire to return the game to the fans.

He said fans would be excited to be able to watch the game’s next generation of players.

“It’s very important that there is vertical integration to get into the NRL, like it used to be, which is the under-21s, into reserve grade, into first grade,’’ V’landys said.

“You only need to look at these Facebook forums where they put the teams up from years gone by to see all the players that were in the under-21s and reserve grade that ended up in first grade.

“To me it’s a priority. We have to look at it. Obviously, like anything, when you want to make a change there’s resistance, but Andrew is talking to the clubs about all those pros and cons.’’
Finally!!
I did enjoy seeing all three grades being played over the evening. When I used to volunteer, I did my thing and I had the opportunity to watch some of the lowers games

Yeah I figured it was going to be too much to ask for the QLD Rugby League to see the bigger picture ahead of their own self interests. Like I said, one can dream.

Demetriou had big wraps at Manly in the juniors, then seemed to disappear.

Still no draw for the NSW cup comp ?

No draws for any of the NSWRL Major Competitions to my knowledge.

"Other major competitions planned for 2021 include the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership, Jersey Flegg Cup, a Presidents Cup knockout competition which will involve teams from the Ron Massey Cup (Central Conference), Newcastle (Northern Conference) and Illawarra (Southern Conference), and the Sydney Shield."

I think they are trying to finalise their sponsorship deal and the plan for sending players up/down and will announce the draw with the major sponsor. It won't be "Canterbury Cup".

While the majority of fans are backing the change, has V’landys forgotten about the supporters of clubs like the Newtown Jets and North Sydney Bears?

The Jets are affiliated with the Sharks, while the Bears are the feeder team for the Roosters. Their games will be moved to Netstrata Jubilee Stadium and the SCG... But both the Jets and Bears — as foundation clubs — have a loyal fanbase that make a day of attending games at Henson Park and North Sydney Oval.

No offence to the Jets but I want our own reserve grade team and want it to be played before first grade.

The Jets or Bears aren't my concern.
