If Lyle had his way, we'd have an A-League franchise sharing tenancy 😂

If you look at the future plans of the AFL and NRL, 'boutique' stadiums will play a big part, especially when bums on seats become less valuable to them then tv subscriptions
precisely and we wouldn’t have a lot of $$ in the bank either

Scaffolding is starting to come down from the hotel that overlooks the stadium.

Assuming it’s gone by Rd 1 it’s an approvement on aesthetics and a good start.

Couldn’t see if it’s coming down on the other end too
A few photos for anyone outside the area

Shame we didn’t keep our Buy in That hotel ..
Yeah there would have been a lot of good opportunities, e.g. premium game day experiences. But there's only 10 or so of them a year, and the club always talks about sticking to their core business (leagues clubs), rather than trying to run different business types.

I imagine there might be a few spies from other clubs booking in on training day before big games...

Though it won’t be just game day, where they’ll get $$ for accommodation.
it would be good all year all round especially Nov/Dec/Jan period

Meh rather be closer to the water in the summer months.
Theres a real lack of short term accommodation in the shire. So it will be busy.

We booked a weekend down there last year (non home game week) ended up staying at Miranda Metro (which is where i left what little dignity i had left). All the places near the beach were booked out weeks and weeks in advance

Yeah I agree it will be busy throughout the year. I’m more just thinking about how us having a share in it would have differentiated it from a regular hotel and made it more profitable than say just investing in a hotel chain…. Mainly gamedays and some leagues club meal deals and special fan experiences. But maybe not enough to justify it. I still would have liked it too though

True mate. Though there are other avenues streams they are working on, which could be even better

What kind of concerts?

Firstly, the residents would complain about excessive noise.

Secondly, no chance a concert of any size would be held there again from a commercial perspective or geographical perspective.

Sunset cinema. Sure, they could do that but it's not going to generate that much income.

Look I agree, it would be better if it was used more but it's not as easy as you think. Remember we needed a crowd of something like 13k (when the ground could hold ~18-19k) just to break even.

I fear for our future there.

Same.

I don't think in NRL you can guarantee anything more than about 5 years in future, but I see plenty of positives about the ground:
  • The new development has created an amphitheatre style atmosphere, it's now a very distinctive ground that's good for TV and corporates.
  • We don't need to waste time negotiating ground rights every few years, unlike clubs like Souths, who are stuck in a mess with Stadium Australia. And we don't need to go negotiating for training bases with the council (and there's basically nowhere else available full-time). Life's good and simple for the players.
  • The new leagues club is reliant on the ground being there, and the hotel would be expecting the ground there
  • The capacity doesn't need to be much higher than 15,000. Shire people like a hot ticket.... In previous years when tickets were easily available you couldn't give them away.
  • Hopefully eventually the CeO and stand extension will happen. Just need to make Cook a more marginal seat!

It’s disgusting’: Sharks boss enraged over stadium snub

It doesnt help when the local state MP Mark Speakman has been against the development from day 1 .
The Cronulla Sharks have slammed the state government over funding backflips to build a new centre of excellence.

Every other NSW-based NRL team, plus the Sydney Swans and the GWS Giants, has received cash from the government for stadiums and high-performance centres in recent years. The Sharks have had nothing.

“It’s embarrassing and it’s disgusting,” said Sharks CEO Dino Mezzatesta.

A series of text messages between former sports minister Stuart Ayres, Treasurer Matt Kean and Mezzatesta reveal months of stalling tactics and false pledges to the club.

The text messages, obtained by The Sunday Telegraph, show Ayres writing to Mezzatesta: “You’re in with the suburban grounds – still working through that.”

Ayres then pledged almost $400m for a new stadium in his own seat of Penrith, which is borderline for the election, but gave the Sharks nothing.

Kean wrote to Mezzatesta in December: “Dino we will get it done. I am trying to find the money. Let’s chat in the next week. Merry Xmas.”

Mezzatesta texted the Treasurer again in early January.

Kean: “Mate I’ll get into it when I get back from leave.”

Mezzatesta sent more texts in late January but didn’t get a reply. Finally, on February 3 Kean writes: “Let me get through next Tuesday half-year review. I’m still confident we can make it work.”

There has been no correspondence since.

Instead the government has handed out another $15 million to the Roosters, another $15 million to the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown plus $11 million to North Sydney Oval.

Interestingly, Kean is an old North Sydney Bears fan.

The Sharks, who have the second-biggest junior league catchment area in NSW, are furious at the way they have been treated.

“At one stage we were told we’d be getting $90 million for a stadium upgrade and a high-performance centre,” Mezzatesta said. “We’ve had countless conversations. The latest was $25 million. Then they told us after the election we’d get the balance.

“At least $25 million would get us up to the standards of all our rival clubs.

“We just want to be treated the same as everyone else. We’re in a safe Liberal seat and that’s the problem.

“We can’t host a men’s and women’s game at the same venue because of the lack of facilities. We’ve put forward a really strong case … surely we’re entitled to funding.”

A spokeswoman for treasurer Matt Kean said Kean had met with the Cronulla Sharks who asked for government funding for their private project.

“Subsequent to that meeting, the NSW government committed $800 million to the resilient homes fund for flood-affected communities, $500 million for regional road repairs as a result of floods, and $612 million for health measures relating to Covid which have been the government’s priorities,” she said.

“The government remains committed to suburban stadiums in a staged manner. “

Thankfully we don’t need to use it is as a draw card to retain and recruit like other teams. With Fitzy as coach that goes further than a hundred COE.

On the development I heard the new King Wan which is going to be called The Golden Bay apparently is meant to open in August.

Thanks for sharing this .

Really glad Dino has decided to let everyone know how he & the club has been led along by the pollies & hope this is just an instalment .

An upgrade to Shark Park would be a benefit to the total community & to use language that Speakman favours these days it will be "inclusive " plus it would be an ongoing benefit unlike some of the cash being splashed around in election promises to noisy specific interest groups .
