I may be a tree-hugging hippie most of the time, but the consortium have already pointed out that they're not destroying the mangroves and the local wildlife will not be significantly harmed. That would have been my only concern - however the bloke I spoke to on the voting night made it clear that my concerns were unwarranted.

saw on TV tonight (channel 10 i think) due to population set to be 6mil in sydney by 2050,
they were asking for punters to find sydneys biggest eyesores to be sent in for development,
easy target for us, use this as ammo for our arguments side.

I hope everyone allows this to be an information session for concerned residents, and not an intimidation session. It won't help.
I think it mainly comes down to reasons why it's being done, alternatives if it's not done, and ways to make it better. Too much hate here for people who a lot of us would probably agree with on similar developments if they were not about the Sharks' survival.

The best way to combat a lot of hysterical and ill-informed nonsense is with fact and with a dignified approach.
Clearly, there are many who have been swayed by either a passionate pro or a passionate against.
The democratic process is not only about vanquishing those who dispute but also to take on board their concerns and steer towards a mutually beneficial outcome. As long as all parties concerned are armed with accurate information and eenter into discussion with reason and logic then the best possible outcome will probably eventuate.
Adversariality rarely sees a smooth transition to results. Regardless as to how illogical and ill-informed Capsis and his cronies are, I still defend their right to have their opinions and concerns heard and brought to the table.
If their attitudes are robust and stand the test of reasoned and strong debate then they should be taken on board. However, if their arguments are purely specious and vexatious then I believe that they should be held to account.
At the end of the day I want to see what is best for my community and as a long term resident of this community (and as a supporter, sponsor and member of the Cronulla Sharks) I believe that a healthy cultural and identifying icon like the Cronulla Sharks should be encouraged to seek the means to be successful and sustainable for as long as possible.
Make no mistake... the Shire is an enclave of Black, White & Blueness and it is my wish and desire that it should always be that way. I also believe that the Cronulla Sharks are good for the community and social and economic growth of the Shire.

There should be NO mocking or ridiculing of anyone who asks genuine questions about the development. Sure, they might sound like dumb questions to those of us who have chosen to remain informed throughout this process. To newcomers to the debate, the only dumb question is the one they don't ask, to be honest.
Take a look back at how DI, the consortium and the board have handled 'stirrers' over the past two years. DI has had Stuart, Fisk, Hadley, Moore, Alan Jones and countless print journos and 'identities' throw piles of vitriol at him at various times. He's always played a straight bat, refused to get dragged into a slanging match (although on several occasions a return serve would have been more than justified), and focussed on getting the job done.
The way our club leaders have handled themselves since the middle of 2009 gives us a great template for how to handle ourselves next week.

It's simply not a wise asset to have money tied up in. It doesn't give you the kind of return you need.
If the playing fields side really could get the club 35 million that is simply an incredible amount of money. Even if they went and invested that in the stock market or whatever they'd be looking at real cash returns of 2 million a year. Plus the 1 million from the other side.
Affectively that means in the mean time we're not making that 2 million, so that we can have those fields. Does that make sense? Of course it doesn't make any sense at all.
That's about 75 grand a week during the junior season.

What I don't like about anything that Capsis says is that it is all unsubstantiated lies and scare-mongering. He has no credible information to back up any of his fanciful claims of Armageddon by the Mangroves.
His claim that the development will not benefit the Sharks, only the developers defies even basic logic. If the developers make a profit, how can the Club not, given that it is a joint venture with profit sharing?
As someone rightly pointed out, 10% of the residential sales on 700 or so units at approx $500K is about $35 MILLION! How are we not benfitting again, George?
Why isn't he being held accountable for his lies by the media?

Sensibly invested, even $16M would set us up for a very long time, when underlined by new fiscally-responsible management practices and sound rental returns from the Eastern car park development.
If it really maxes out at $30M plus, our club WILL be able to compete with the established powerhouse 'business' teams in the NRL.
We just have to survive the next few years. THAT is our real battle, it really is.

not only that shark, but when the tv deal goes ahead, if the salary cap is all funded by the nrl, we will definately be able to compete in the market.

I hear you re: the NRL funding the 'cap' lads, but...
All that will happen is the mega-rich clubs will find other ways of enticing blokes to play for them, which obviously happens now anyway. At least the playing field will be a little more level in that environment though - and WE will be able to compete.

Apart from the obvious economic benefit to the Sharks, I welcome the Sharks Development in providing more jobs, economic stimulus, greater amenity and infrastructure to the Sutherland Shire community.
Essentially it will become another economic and social node and with the right planning and management an excellent opportunity to bolster the Sutherland Shire economy as a whole.
Just in terms of community value, there are many flow-on effects from something like what is being proposed.
As a possibility, a hospitality training program which might dovetail in with Woolooware High School's HSC Hospitality program. Just as some schools might be known as specialists in Performing Arts, Languages or Technology focussed schools. Perhaps Woolooware High and Sharkies could come to an arrangement where traineeships and work experience opportunities might be available.
Perhaps Sharkies might choose to buy a master lot of the residential development with a view to operating a serviced apartments centre and thereby have another income stream.
The possibilities and opportunities are pretty wide and as this process rolls along I'm sure we're going to see some new and innovative ideas being incorporated.
