Last year was another big one for rugby league and country footballers once again proved that regional areas are the code’s bread and butter.

Season 2009 - A year to remember

Dubbo CYMS won its sixth Tooheys New Group 11 premiership in nine years, Orange hosted the NSW Country versus City Origin match at Wade Park and the Melbourne Storm ended a fairytale run from the Parramatta Eels in the NRL.

Andrew Ryan won the Dally M Captain of the Year award for his efforts with the Canterbury Bulldogs, Parkes Spacemen emerged as a Group 11 force with the signing of former English Super League star Dennis Moran and Wellington’s Blake Ferguson burst onto the scene with the Cronulla Sharks in the NRL.

2009 was another big year for rugby league and country footballers once again proved that the regional areas are the state’s rugby league breadbasket.

The Parramatta Eels were reeling in 15th spot when Orange teenager Daniel Mortimer signed onto the books and proceeded to propel his side into the top eight and then onto the grand final.

While the likes of former Dubbo juniors John Grey for Manly, Brad Marks for Cronulla and Zac Bohan for Penrith toiled away in the Under-20s Toyota Cup competition, graduated winger Blake Ferguson stamped his name on NRL’s top tier with a hat trick of tries for Cronulla Sharks against the Brisbane Broncos.

Nyngan’s Justin Carney and Forbes’ Joel Thompson held down regular spots for the Canberra Raiders, although Carney’s season was cut short by a broken leg.

He will be hoping to make his return in the trial match against Canterbury Bulldogs which, thanks to the efforts of a strong and cohesive Group 11 committee during 2009, will be held at Apex Oval in Dubbo on February 27.

The Western Division nursery looks to be alive and well and set to continue producing into the future with a number of young hopefuls venturing off to NRL clubs this coming 2010 season as well.

Prop forward Max Ray, who scored the winning try for Dubbo CYMS in the final minute of the 2009 first grade grand final, is bound for the St George-Illawarra Dragons while his CYMS juniors team-mate Lionel O’Mally and Macquarie’s Dylan Hill are also bound for Sydney clubs.

Hill recently returned from a tour of Europe with the Australian Institute of Sport squad which also included Gilgandra’s Jordan Hay, Dubbo’s Josh Merritt and Cobar’s Zac Douglas.

Charlie Runciman made waves at junior level and together with Keiran Shipp and Thomas Alchin representing NSW Country Under-16s.

All three were in the Dubbo College Senior Campus side which reached the grand final of the state-wide University Shield school knockout competition before being beaten in the decider.

Parkes came alive with its first and reserve grade teams reaching the Group 11 grand finals and had cause for celebration with their reserve graders victorious over Wellington, while CYMS landed a double with their juniors defeating undefeated minor premiers Macquarie Raiders in the decider.

It was a big year of rugby league for local people and 2010 is set to be just as grand, kicked off by the NRL trial, followed by a revamped Western Challenge pre-season competition including Castlereagh Cup clubs and no doubt another scintillating season of Group 11 rugby league.

it was not the best year for the sharks, but it was not all bad blake ferguson form was outsanding i think he has the potential to develop into the game breaker that we have been lacking and also both porter and stapelton developed into good regular first graders.
