Scrap the Cap - Why we NEED a Transfer System

For years we've heard how the salary cap is doing good things for the competition, bringing it closer and giving every team a chance.

It doesn't take a genius to know that those sentiments are a crock of you know what, because realistically, the current top 4 are by far and away the only ones at having a serious shot in 2013.

my proposal? establish a transfer fee system similar to that witnessed in the EPL.

Sure, it may sound stupid, and most of you will say "the metro teams (Roosters, Souths, Broncos, Melbourne, and even Newcastle to an extent) will have a distinct advantage with no cap".

let me show you why that is not necessarily the case.

Lets use Feki as an example here.

Feki came to us from the warriors on what i can only assume was a next to nothing contract deal (lets say 80k, for arguments sake) seeing as he was shunned.

under a transfer fee, the coaching of players would be more positive, not just looking to maintain player performance but better it for the sake of the current team and that of the investment looking into the future should they wish to sell the player.

Lets look at Cameron Smith.

He's made it clear that his upcoming deal would be his last, looking to put pen to paper be it with the storm or a potential move back to brisbane.

his asking price (lets say 800k) over a 3 or 4 year deal may be tough for clubs to take especially as he's ageing. despite being the best in the game, who's to say he wouldn't do an ACL and fail to return to his best, Brisbane would be kicking themselves if they threw money at him on a long term deal only for him to sit on the sidelines for one of those years.

its hard to sum up using only a couple of examples, but overall, the quality of the competition would only be improved.

How things would work should clubs be forced to cancel player deals (Carney at raiders), or should they switch to other codes (Khunt, Benji) - i dont know. but some form of compensation would have to come into play.

as the competition stands, we do not have the talent crop to sustain a top 25 x 16 teams.

Improve the system = Improved coaching = Improved spectacle.

English Premier League. That's all I have to say. Do you really want a competition like that where it's basically the same teams at the top with the odd exception?

We have to have a cap, even with the cap half of the teams are close to going broke. Long gone are the days of local players staying loyal to their team for significantly less money. Without the cap more than half of the teams would go completely broke or be forced to sell their clubs to wanker billionaire types
