Official Samuel Stonestreet

Was about Stonestreet inside Centre getting early ball too , not just the winger .

Yesterday's game highlighted some pretty big concerns with Stony.

His positional play in defence has been poor. Either jam early or cover your winger, you.can't drift inbetween (though to his credit he tried to improve that later in the game after getting burned several times).

His kamakazi kick returns are not sustainable. He's causing himself damage and taking away his effectiveness . By the end of games he looks and acts busted. He needs to attend a few classes at the Sione Katoa school of running.

I don't mind his aerial game, though he has some of the same kamakazi attitude. Sometimes it seems to be more about the attempt than the result, as though he's been told effort is everything.

I just don't know... He has the attributes we need. Hopefully he develops the smarts to have a long career.

I don’t think any of the 3 tries were his fault. He copped a 2 on 1 and did what he could
I saw it differently. He was sitting in towards the centre, waiting for the moment to break back out to the winger, and just didn't time it right. On the last near try (I think it was?) you could see he got out much sooner and faster. He'll need to trust Iro with the 1-1 a lot more or do the Ronnie jam and let Iro slide across to cover the winger

Nah - there were 3 on 2 against Iro & Stonestreet each time. DWZ's speed off the mark makes it even more difficult - no way Iro could slide across if Stonestreet jammed in.

could it perhaps be that he was a metre or two further in this week because iro had been getting so easily the past 2 weeks. closed down one hole but it creates another on the outside, that he hopes his speed can cover. besides the intercept the put downs by dwz were pretty impressive.

The three man was beaten all ends up on all three occasions, leaving Iro and Stonestreet stranded with a 3 on 2.

All three were good, tight finishes by DWZ which highlights Stonestreet’s recovery speed.

The last near try was a good adjustment from both Iro and Stonestreet could use the sideline as an extra defender; holding the play up enough to cover the deficiency.

First one they had numbers off a good play. Iro had to go for Tuaupiki. Stonestreet had to go in on CNK or he goes over, did well to recover as much as he did.

Third try Teig missed his assignment. Same thing happened

I think it’s more concerning we get left for dead with numbers, it happens often with us. I get it can happen if there is a quick PTB & tackler is still on the ground but literally, they have a over lap which means, the other side of the field, we have some of our blokes marking nobody.
Surely it ain’t that hard to look up, realise we have too many & each man pushes over to number up.

No way they were his fault.
I think any wing / centre partnership takes time. The more they play together the better they they will learn to trust each other etc.

No doubt SS was hedging his bets a bit. He will get there.

Anyone bagging out Sam for his game yesterday is either not watching closely or has an agenda against him.

Yes, he dropped that ball which led to the Warriors first try but apart from that I thought he did ok. He’s no Ronaldo and he’s still learning. That opportunity from the Iro break was all on Iro. He had Kennedy on the inside but chose to go to Sam too late and left him no room whatever. SS ran strongly with the ball and is not getting dominated in tackles as much as he used to. He has something we are sorely lacking in, speed. Until Ronaldo returns, he is the best option in that position.

100%

Yeah Iro had to straighten up and draw in the fullback on that break. Iro both slowed down and gradually drifted towards the sideline.

On SS, I can see a noticeable improvement from last year and hope he re-signs and continues to get better over the next few years.

I love his speed and willingness to compete - with and without the ball.

There will be some bumps along the way but that should be expected.

Our defence got pulled a bit out of shape on those. On at least one of them AFB was defending 3 in, daresay he’s not going to cover across as quick as Wilton who would normally be there.

At one stage he ran a kick back straight into their three middles. And if I remember correctly it was their starting middles. Didn’t lose any ground - an improvement on prior criticisms.
Wise? Yeah not so much. Sometimes **** happens.

But AFB got thrown down 1 on 1 by Ford early yesterday so well done Sam not being driven backwards by them.

No he wasn't - he had no choice marking 2 players.
