Yeah the flat track is half the reason I picked it for my first.

My cousin works full time with the Gold Coast Marathon so it's always a bit of a family get together for the runners figured it was about time I joined in.

The half marathon would be a casual jog around the block type thing for you wouldn't it HB, don't use do those crazy million km runs.
It wasn't back then mate, was my first real race, was long for me at the time.

Any distance race is hard though if you push yourself to the limit.

Started training for the half yet, Deano?

I have a race in the Blue Mountains next Saturday then I think I'll have a few weeks off and enjoy myself.....translation: drink beer.

Sort of, there's been a lot of sport too making actual running hours tough. Started this in November though so hopefully gets me through.

2 nights a week AFL training (preseason so has been a fair bit of running).
Basketball 1 night a week.
1 long run per week.
2 days where I either do high intensity running or pretty chilled bike ride/swim dependent on how the body is going for the week.
Short high intensity body weight work out 5 out of 7 mornings

I'm mainly just looking to finish having run it all, I'm not too worried about time.

I'm going to have to cut down the drinking soon, I've still been going hard at that.

That's the best attitude for your first one. You're doing plenty of exercise, I think you'll be fine.

Yeah I'm pretty confident ATM every time I step up my distance I run it slow the first time & do it easily.

Need to get back on top of diet/grog get rid of a bit of weight.

Finally purchased a new pair of runners yesterday, $220, but I've found in this sense you do get what you pay for.

There are few things as therapeutic as running, I suppose the most enticing aspect which draws me in so much is the fact I lack so much natural ability, so the magnitude of the challenge coincides with the reward.

I've let myself go recently, so I'm looking forward to firing some endorphins and hopefully shrinking the waistline.

Boy, in the midst of the instense run, one can find themselves in a very dark place, filled with demonic thoughts of inadequacy and self loathing, it's a fine art to fill your mind with thoughts of self compassion and encouragement during this, and afterwards what euphoric stress relief it is.

Jesus mate that's a deep post!

I get where you're coming from though. That's the beauty of running, you can be the fittest person in the world but everyone goes through dark times when running. The satisfaction of getting yourself through that is a great feeling.

When I'm struggling all that goes through my head is **** this running bull**** it's not worth it haha.

HB I'm looking to try & take on a proper program for training & adjust it a little to suit my sport. Most of the programs I've looked at have a longest run of 16km, I'm a bit concerned that this might not be far enough. Any thoughts on the matter?

There's no reason why you can't go a bit longer for a half. Personally I would stretch the long run out to 18-19km mate, won't be much more fatigue in the legs but will give you more confidence on race day.

I was thinking 18, an extra 5km on top of the longest run just seems daunting.

I've plateaued at 12km per long run at the moment & am currently focusing more on my sport Basketball finals & start of AFL season coming up.

I was thinking of having my long run as around 12km for each week of April then starting to ramp up again in May.

Do you see any dramas with that HB?

So that will give you two months to race day? Yeah I think you will be fine mate as long as you maintain your current base. You're doing plenty of cross training as well which is good.
